Emmys viewership dips, but younger demos rise

That flat opening skit (Leonard Nimoy is not a comedy substitute for Alec Baldwin). The never-to-be-seen-again “Emmytones” choir. Those painful voiceover presenter introductions. Man, even Charlie Sheen and Ricky Gervais seemed neutered.

Sunday night’s Emmys will not be ranked among the most-loved productions of the annual awards show, but at least it won’t be the lowest-rated: Last night’s show delivered 12.4 million viewers, down 8 percent from last year. Yet among adults 18-49, the show’s rating rose slightly, up 2 percent to a 4.2. And among adults 18-34, the show had its biggest number in four years. Those comparisons to aren’t bad considering the Emmys faced NBC’s Sunday Night Football last night. (In 2010, NBC aired the awards show.) The lowest-rated Emmys was in 2008 on ABC, which was seen by 12.3 million and had a 3.8 rating.

Overall, the night was dominated by Sunday Night Football, the Eagles vs. Falcons game registering a 15.7 overnight household rating, up 3 percent from last year’s Week 2 game.

Alec Baldwin explains why he skipped Emmys

Why didn’t Alec Baldwin show up at the 62nd Emmys last night? Though it was previously reported the actor skipped after Fox cut a Rupert Murdoch joke he filmed for the telecast, Baldwin said he simply chose to attend a birthday party instead. In New York for Tony Bennett’s 85th birthday gala, the actor told reporters of the Murdoch report, “I didn’t skip the Emmys because of that … I skipped the Emmys because of this — because I wanted to be here.”

Baldwin served as host of the Bennett gala — a role he said he signed up for long before the Emmys show was scheduled — and told reporters he would catch the Emmys “on YouTube tomorrow.” On Sunday, reports claimed Baldwin was angry that Fox had decided to remove a bit poking fun at the News of the World phone hacking scandal in Britain. (Fox told EW that the joke was cut because the network feared it would be in poor taste to make light of serious allegations surrounding the scandal.) Baldwin addressed the situation later, tweeting, “Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc I think it would have made them look better. A little.”

Web series 'Wendy': See sneak peek at episode 3 here!

Last week, Alloy Entertainment — the Hollywood company behind hit television series like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and Vampire Diaries — launched a new, original web series, Wendy, that is getting some traction in the teen universe. The story is a modern retelling of the classic Peter Pan tale, and EW has an exclusive sneak peek at the series’ third episode, which will air this Thursday, Sept. 22.

Meagan Martin — known for her work in ABC Family’s 10 Things I Hate About You series and Mean Girls 2, as well as Disney’s Camp Rock franchise — stars as the show’s namesake character who must choose between the boy she loves and the boy in her dreams, Pete, who’s played by Pretty Little Liars‘ and Days of Our Lives alum Tyler Blackburn.

The scene — which, like the whole series, was shot at the rumored-to-be-haunted Paramour Mansion in Silver Lake, Calif. — here is one of the first times that Wendy and Pete really speak to each other. In the first two episodes, the pair interact without really talking to each other. “I really enjoyed working on this scenes,” Blackburn told EW. “It is the first time Wendy and Pete really connect, not to mention the set looks like Neverland!”

Emmys: The 7 best jokes of the night

The bar for “funny” on TV is rarely lower than on award shows, where only the most cautious of jokes tend to slip through. But this year, the Emmys seemed more cautious than ever: Alec Baldwin bowed out from the ceremony after his telephone hacking scandal joke was cut from the opening skit (Leonard Nimoy took his place). And the running gag behind usual award show rebel Ricky Gervais’ taped segment was about how he was not allowed to insult anybody. Still, some witty lines made the cut and here they are:

– “There’s Betty White, she’s the reason we start the show at 5 p.m.” — host Jane Lynch. READ FULL STORY »

Mad Men won its fourth consecutive Emmy and Modern Family claimed its second at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday that aired live on Fox.

Despite other predictable wins like Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce, The Amazing Race for best competition reality show and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart winning for its ninth straight year, the three-hour ceremony hosted by Glee’s Jane Lynch featured plenty of first-time victors: Peter Dinklage won for Game of Thrones, Kyle Chandler for Friday Night Lights, Martin Scorsese for directing Boardwalk Empire, Barry Pepper for The Kennedys and veteran film and TV actress Margo Martindale for the FX drama Justified. “Sometimes, things just take time,” she said, fighting back tears. “With time comes great appreciation.” READ FULL STORY »

Emmy death reel: Was it not 'a bummer'?

Categories:

Remember when Emmy producer Mark Burnett promised the death reel this year would be less depressing?

Last month Burnett made headlines when he told critics, ”I think ‘In Memoriam’ doesn’t need to be a bummer.”

The sequence used clips of the dearly departed (including former Spartacus star Andy Whitfield) while The Canadian Tenors sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” READ FULL STORY »

Game of Thrones picked up an Emmy on Sunday night, with Peter Dinklage taking the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister.

One of the more eagerly anticipated acting races had the actor thanking his dogsitter, as well as his wife Erica Schmidt. “Wow, I followed Martin Scorsese,” Dinklage marveled, referring to the winner of the previous category. “I couldn’t do this without David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the producers, they were the first to call me and tell me about this part. HBO you’re quite simply the best place to work for you — you let artists create.”

Actual question asked of Dinklage backstage: “You just seem so perpetually cool, being badass, how do you do that?” READ FULL STORY »

'Amazing Race' reclaims reality competition Emmy

Categories: Emmys, The Amazing Race

For awhile there, it looked like the TV Academy may have changed course from awarding CBS’ The Amazing Race every year with the outstanding reality competition Emmy. Last year Bravo’s Top Chef broke the veteran travel competition series’ seven-year winning streak. But alas for rivals like American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, Project Runway, Top Chef and So You Think You Can Dance, tonight Race once again claimed the top reality prize.

“I just went around the world 55 times,” said Race executive producer Bertram van Munster. “It’s very uncomfortable. It takes a tremendous amount effort — every camera position, every detail … it’s a very complex operation.” For a full list of Emmy winners, see here.

Charlie Sheen presents Emmy, addresses 'Men' team

charlie-sheen_320.jpg

Charlie Sheen took the Emmy stage Sunday night and presented the award for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series. The actor called the award “my old category” and then declared:

“I want to take a moment to get something off my chest and say a few words to everybody at Two and a Half Men.” Sheen paused dramatically, then said: “From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season. We spent eight wonderful years together and I know you will continue to make great television.” Fox and producers were reportedly pressured by Men showrunner Chuck Lorre to drop the actor from the telecast. But see, that wasn’t so bad, right? READ FULL STORY »
