Why, good morning! NBC’s new comedy Up All Night delivered a surprisingly strong premiere/preview rating Wednesday night.

The new comedy starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett was given a big lead-in by the two-hour finale of America’s Got Talent (14 million viewers, 3.5 adults 18-49 rating). While Up All Night (10.9 million, 3.7) at 10 p.m. dipped slightly from the final half hour of Got Talent, it still ranked as the night’s highest-rated show overall with an enviable number. Not as many viewers stuck around, however, for NBC’s second new comedy, Hank Azaria’s Free Agents (6.3 million, 2.1).

Jeff Probst on the premiere of 'Survivor: South Pacific'

Each week, host Jeff Probst will answer a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: South Pacific.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Three minutes into the game, John asks you to call him Cochran so he can be like many of the former Survivor greats known simply on a last name basis. I thought it was a bad move because that to me is a situation where you want to lay low and blend in, not draw unnecessary attention to yourself, but I remember you telling me out there that you thought it was brilliant. Explain.
JEFF PROBST:
Hmm. It’s probably a sign of getting old but I can’t remember why I said it was “brilliant.” I do remember saying something like that, I just can’t remember the particulars. So, here’s my answer as of today… I do see your point about calling attention to being a Survivor fan and how that might work against you and I think you’re right. Also he put himself in a category of “great” players before he had even earned it, which might also work against him. So what the hell was it that I thought was so brilliant? Well, it was charming, at least to me. So there’s that… alright Dalton, dammit you’re right again. It was a risky move and one that could easily work against him. I was probably just trying to be contrary. READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor' premiere: On the scene with Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and L.A. Reid

x-factor_320.jpg

By the time the four celebrity judges made their debut at the premiere of Simon Cowell’s U.S. version of his British hit The X Factor, the audience had already been waiting for well over an hour. But this, Cowell explained, was for good reason. “The reason that we’re late, in the true tradition of reality TV, is that the guys who were making the show were an hour late,” he said. “So they were editing the show literally until the last second, which is why we were all delayed. So, it better be worth it.”

Was it worth it? Well, this former skeptic says yes. Cowell, along with his bosom buddy Paula Abdul and newcomers Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid, sat down at the ArcLight Hollywood Wednesday night for a 90 minute-screening with an assortment of Fox employees, reporters, radio contest winners, and USC theater students. After the screening, the audience was treated to a bizarre and occasionally awkward question and answer session that debuted the tremendous chemistry between the judges.

The X Factor will eventually feature a mentoring aspect similar to The Voice, with each judge leading a group segmented according to age—anyone over 12 could audition. The premiere episode was your standard early audition fare, but with more drama than American Idol and fewer painful auditory experiences. Think longer, more fleshed out backstories (Meth addiction! Verbally abusive husbands! Someone named Xander Alexander!), and less of this. Also, the contestants performed in front of thousands of people instead of just the judges, and ranged from a middle schooler to an octogenarian. A few powerful performances stood out (watch out for Melanie Amaro), and one almost made Abdul vomit.

The X Factor will premiere on Sept. 21, but you can read about Cowell fighting with audience members and Abdul and Scherzinger’s jealousies after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor: South Pacific': Nerds gone wild!

Promos for Survivor: South Pacific showed blonde beauty Whitney Duncan frolicking in the water in her underwear, but in tonight’s premiere, it wasn’t about the hotties who all seemed a little too eager to lose their clothing, but rather the one person who didn’t want to show off his body. And that would be John (don’t call me John) Cochran, who worried how his physique would stack up against a tribe full of hardbodies. (Answer: not well.) My full recap will be up at 12:30am Eastern (UPDATE: Dalton’s Survivor: South Pacific recap is now live), but if you’ve already watched tonight’s Survivor: South Pacific and can’t wait to sound off on what went down, then read on for more. [SPOILER ALERT: Read on only if you've already watched tonight's episode of Survivor: South Pacific.] READ FULL STORY »

Lost actors and Hawaii — they have to go back! Now another familiar face from the ABC hit is coming ashore to CBS’ Hawaii Five-0.

Tania Raymonde is guest starring on the series in the upcoming season (she played Alex Rousseau; looks different all glammed out in the photo, huh?). Raymonde plays Trisha, a married woman caught up in a love triangle between her husband and the volleyball coach she’s sleeping with. Meredith Monroe will guest star in the same episode as a star player on the volleyball team. Raymonde will have plenty of familiar company on the set — former Lost-co-star Daniel Dae Kim if of course a regular, and Terry O’Quinn has joined the show for season 2.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas on 'Home Improvement' reunion: 'Like old times' -- EXCLUSIVE

Jonathan-Taylor-Thomas

Welcome back to the spotlight, Jonathan Taylor Thomas!

He laid pretty low after Home Improvement ended its run in 1999 (save some appearances on Smallville and Veronica Mars), but EW managed to lure the former teen idol back in front of the camera for a reunion shot in Pacific Palisades, CA. Afterward, Thomas talked to the magazine about his beloved run on the ABC comedy, what he’s been up to, and whether we’ll ever see him again on the small screen. (That’s your cue, Tim Allen: Time to book your TV son for a cameo on ABC’s Last Man Standing!). READ FULL STORY »

'Jersey Shore' star to appear on '90210'

Vinny-Guadagnino

A little bit of the Jersey Shore will come to the CW’s 90210 this autumn. EW has learned that Vinny Guadagnino has been cast in an episode that will air in November.

Guadagnino will portray a celebrity who plays in a high stakes poker game with Liam (Matt Lanter) when the cast heads to Las Vegas. He won’t play himself, however: He’ll depict a “young and gregarious” celebrity who “enjoys the fruits of fame.” Earlier this month, the show put out a search for a celeb who “could be anybody from an upcoming movie star to a well-known reality TV personality.”

90210 wanted casting agents to submit well-known names only — thus, the arrival of Vinny!

Thrilled to see an MTV reality star on the CW?

Not only is NBC having the weight-challenged Biggest Loser crowd run another marathon this season, but, for the first time, the runners will include eliminated contestants. At stake: A spot in the finale.

The premiere will have 15 contestants, divided by age, race across the desert for the chance to choose the trainer they want (Bob Harper, Anna Kournikova, or Dolvett Quince). They will all return to the same spot in the desert near the end of the season for a chance to be in the finale by running 26.2 miles — whether they’ve been eliminated or not. The show returns Sept. 20.
