'True Blood' scoop: Who's coming to Bon Temps in season 5?

Since the citizens of Bon Temps dropped like flies (RIP Jesus, Marnie, Nan, and possibly Tara) on True Blood‘s surprising finale, season 5 will introduce fresh meat and showcase some familiar faces. “There will be a very significant, strong, mysterious woman at the center of one of our main stories next year,” says co-executive producer Raelle Tucker. “That will be a very familiar and compelling character. It may be someone you’ve heard of before.” We will also once again visit the fairy world touched upon at the beginning of season 4. Says Tucker, “Season 5 will explore more fairies, new fairies, fairies in a way you haven’t really seen fairies. We will all, as well as Sookie, come to understand fairies more than in previous seasons.”

Scott Foley’s Patrick, who we met in the finale, will bring trouble to Terry (Todd Lowe) and Arlene (Carrie Preston). Says Tucker, “His arc has to do with Terry’s past coming back to haunt Bon Temps and Arlene and their life they’re trying to set up together.” READ FULL STORY »

USA gives sitcoms a shot, picks up two half-hour pilots

Categories: Theater

USA has announced that it is going into the half-hour comedy game after giving the green light to two pilots. The first pilot, called for now the Untitled Douglas McGrath Project (a.k.a. On We Go), focuses on an unlucky Broadway hopeful who returns to his hometown in Texas to care for his ailing father. Nathan Lane will executive produce and possibly star alongside McGrath. The second pilot, Paging Dr. Freed, follows two brothers who have inherited their late father’s medical practice. “The pick up of these half-hour comedy pilots underscores our commitment to broadening the appeal of USA’s entertainment brand,” said USA Co-Presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel.  “We’re excited to be collaborating with some of the most distinct voices in the business as we open up to new genres.”

Finale ratings: 'Entourage' up, 'True Blood' down

Entourage

HBO’s finale-stuffed Sunday ratings are here: The last-ever episode of Entourage went out on a high note, concluding with its most-watched episode of the season, with 3.1 million viewers (2.6 million in its first airing, plus the show’s repeat).

The fourth-season closer of True Blood delivered 6.2 million viewers total for the night (5.1 million for its first airing, plus the repeat) — down slightly this year after rising last summer. Overall, though, Blood did well this season, hitting a series high with one episode and maintaining its average. Curb Your Enthusiasm benefited by being paired with True Blood this summer (an odd coupling, but the ratings didn’t mind) — and ended with a total of 2.4 million for the night. That’s Curb‘s most-watched finale since 2004.

'Survivor: South Pacific:' Jeff Probst explains changes to the Redemption Island twist and why it's back

Last season Survivor announced the biggest change ever to its format by allowing people that were voted off to stay in the game and compete to get back on a tribe courtesy of a little something called Redemption Island. Fans were divided. Some liked it. Others, like myself, felt that it diluted the impact of Survivor‘s most important moment of all — the Tribal Council vote out. But Redemption Island is back. In a video interview taken just a few hours after filming began on Survivor: South Pacific, Emmy-winning host Jeff Probst tells us why he’s glad to do it all over again, and explains one big change to the Redemption island format. To hear Probst break down the controversial twist, just click on the video player below. Then, make sure to enjoy his prediction for the first player to go, as well as him ranting at me about press coverage (mostly mine) of the show. And if you do nothing else today, make sure to take a look at Jeff Probst in a truly incredible hat. Good stuff! Then, for more Survivor news and views, follow me on Twitter @EWDaltonRoss. Take it away, Jeff… READ FULL STORY »

Charlie and Martin Sheen reunite for 'Apocalypse Now' spoof on Comedy Central! -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Charlie-Sheen-Roast

I love the sight of a family reunion in the morning! Charlie Sheen has teamed with his father for a parody of Martin Sheen’s legendary film Apocalypse Now. The Comedy Central digital short was filmed to promote Charlie Sheen’s roast and marks the first time the father and son have appeared together in a scripted project since Martin Sheen guest starred on Two and a Half Men six years ago. The Sheen patriarch has largely turned down interview requests since his son’s headline-making departure from the CBS sitcom, but his supportive role in this video speaks volumes. To say any more would spoil the fun. Check out this must-watch video short titled Charpocolypse (which included Roman Coppola as a technical adviser), and an interview with Comedy Central about the making of the spoof below: READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor: South Pacific': See a complete run through of the first immunity challenge (awesome Jeff Probst hat included!)

While on location for Survivor: All-Stars, executive producer Mark Burnett and I were talking about the upcoming immunity challenge about to take place. In typical Burnett style, he was telling me how “epic” it was going to be and how each team had to dive 13 feet underwater to unhook a raft from the ocean floor. “I’d like to do that,” I responded. Next thing you know, Burnett and I were swimming out to the spot and diving down ourselves. And a new tradition was born: press members taking part in a challenge rehearsal.

Fast forward to this summer in Samoa, where filming had just commenced on Survivor: South Pacific. But instead of one lonely loser putting his life in danger, we had…well, I didn’t bother to count, but it was a lot of press people all willing to sacrifice their bodies and their reputations for the sake of challenge-winning glory.  And this time the whole thing was captured on tape. How? Well, for one thing that wily Jeff Probst was sticking a camera in our collective face half the time. (The other half he was turning it on himself to show off the raddest hat this side of the international date line.) READ FULL STORY »

Mary Fickett — best known for playing Nurse Ruth Martin on All My Children — has died. Born in New York, the actress won an Emmy in 1972 for her work on the ABC drama. She was one of the sudser’s original cast members.

ABC released this statement today: “We at ABC were very saddened to learn about the passing of one of All My Children’s original cast members, Mary Fickett, who portrayed beloved nurse Ruth Brent Martin from 1970-1995 and again from 1998-2000. As we honor All My Children’s 41 years on ABC, we cannot help but recognize and remember Mary’s wonderful depiction of Pine Valley’s revered Ruth. True Blood fans are still reeling from last night’s epic and bloody season finale. SPOILER ALERT! We saw the returns of Grands (Lois Smith) and Rene (Michael Raymond-James), as well as possibly the resurrection of Russell (Denis O’Hare). He’s baaaack: Jim Belushi just sold a sitcom pilot to ABC.

The former According to Jim star is working on a new comedy “where a co-dependent father and his teenage daughter’s relationship is turned upside down when they are put together in a unique situation.”  Diane English (Murphy Brown) is the showrunner on the “put pilot” deal (where there’s a big penalty if the project doesn’t air) for the show, which is titled You Won’t Even Know I’m Here.

So you know what this means: If Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing survives the season, we could be in for an Allen/Belushi working man’s family comedy hour.
