'Criminal Minds' boss on team's reunion in season 7 premiere, 'emotional aftermath' to come

Before we talk about the season 7 premiere, I offer my advance apologies. The headline you see above is a tease until 1 a.m. ET. That is when I will post my full chat with Criminal Minds executive producer and showrunner Erica Messer. (We have to give EW’s west coast readers a chance to watch!)

In the meantime, however, I wanted to give you a place to chat about the season premiere, which found Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) returning to work with the team — and baddie Ian Doyle (Timothy V. Murphy)! — on a case involving Doyle’s son, who’d been kidnapped.

Star Thomas Gibson, who held a premiere party last night for the cast and crew, says of the episode and season, “It felt like a big family reunion. We’re really counting our lucky stars,” he said. “To quote Kirsten [Vangsness], ‘Erica wrote the s–t out of it, and Glenn [Kershaw] directed the s–t out of it.’ It’s really a new beginning to the show.”

In our chat with Messer, conducted while she was attending said bash at Gibson’s house (pause here to recognize how incredibly adorable that is), she breaks down the very special episode and chats about what’s to come. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' newbie Vanessa Lengies on Sugar's upcoming revenge (of sorts) and her scary moment with Idina Menzel

Basking in the Glee glow hasn’t been as easy as one would think for new cast member Vanessa Lengies, who made her debut on the show last night as delusional high schooler, Sugar. As fans (about 8 million of them) were settling down to watch the premiere episode, Lengies was wrapping up a seven-hour dance rehearsal with her new Glee castmates and rushing to make it to her Glee premiere party (thrown by her BFF, Life Unexpected creator Liz Tigelaar). No rest for those who love Wicked.

Slightly rested up (and very sore), Lengies called EW earlier today to chat about her new (somewhat polarizing) role, tease what’s next for the character (scenes with Idina Menzel!), and talk about her surprising heroic moment on set (hint: bagels are dangerous).

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So, Sugar is an odd character, and that’s saying a lot considering the collection of characters we have on Glee.
VANESSA LENGIES: What I like about her is that she’s so strange is that everyone — even on set — has ideas about what Sugar should be and do. READ FULL STORY »

File under: “Culture crash.” EW has confirmed that evangelical minister Ted Haggard will participate in the inaugural season of Celebrity Wife Swap. The Colorado pastor, made famous when he was scandalized by a drug-fueled dalliance with a rent boy, is set to swap spouses with wide-eyed Oscar nominee (and born-again Christian) Gary Busey. Haggard remains with his wife Gayle and maintains his public condemnation of homosexuality despite the 2006 controversy. Busey currently has a 19-month-old son with girlfriend Steffanie Sampson.

Fringe‘s fourth season is a reset. Yes, that term is often overused among TV bosses, but last year, the show literally made their main character disappear. I think it’s a warranted declaration in this case.

Today, executive producers J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner hopped on the phone for an extremely geek-tastic chat with reporters to explain how this new frontier of Fringe storytelling would affect the show and our beloved characters (in both worlds). Oh, and they talked a bit about that tiny question of Peter’s return. [Minor spoilers ahead.] READ FULL STORY »

Now we know what happened to Peter Bishop after he disappeared from history in last May’s season finale of Fringe — he took a job writing comics.

In advance of the Fox’s sci-fi saga’s season four premiere on Friday (9/8c PM), DC Entertainment is launching Beyond The Fringe, a new comic book series that fans of the show can buy for 99 cents via digital download. The first installment — available this afternoon at read.dccomics.com — is written by Joshua Jackson himself and drawn Jorge Jimenez. (Cover art is by Drew Johnson.) New issues will post every two weeks and will alternate between “A storylines” and “B storylines.” The former will explore uncharted regions of the show’s mythology; the latter will feature “what if?” tales that imagine variations of events and adventures.

Jackson’s three-part “A” arc is entitled “Peter and The Machine” and takes place between the events depicted in the season three finale and the forthcoming season premiere. DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television supplied EW with a two-page excerpt from the comic, sans captions and word balloons. However, since we watch Fringe wayyy too closely, we might surmise the context.  READ FULL STORY »

Zooey Deschanel's 'New Girl' opens big; 'Glee' dips

Zooey Deschanel charmed the pants off Fox viewers Tuesday night, delivering a truly impressive premiere rating for her comedy New Girl and debuting as the top-rated show on an ultra-competitive night. There’s also the second week of numbers for Sarah Michelle Geller’s Ringer and the premieres for Body of Proof, Unforgettable, Parenthood and more.

New Girl was seen by 10.1 million viewers at 9 p.m. and delivered a strong 4.7 adults 18-49 rating. That’s the highest-rated fall sitcom premiere on Fox since The Bernie Mac Show 10 years ago. What’s particularly impressive about this number is how much the comedy built from its Glee third season premiere lead-in. Glee (8.9 million, 3.8) was down 32 percent from its first episode last fall, yet New Girl was up a whopping 52 percent from the debut of Raising Hope in its slot last year. Speaking of Hope (6.8 million, 3.1), the second season of the comedy successfully matched its first season premiere rating at 9:30 p.m.

CBS ranked a strong second place, with NCIS (19.5 million, 4.2) and NCIS: LA (16.7 million, 3.6) both bucking the usual broadcast trend and growing about 5 percent from last fall. The duo helped new crime drama Unforgettable (14 million, 2.9) open solid and conquer 10 p.m. — plus the show was up 16 percent from the premiere of Good Wife in the time period last year. Ioan Gruffudd blows his horn about 'Ringer,' Sarah Michelle Gellar, and his hope for more Hornblowing

Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t the only geek icon returning to television this fall in Ringer. Ioan Gruffudd — maybe best known to the masses for playing super-elastic egghead Reed Richards in two Fantastic Four movies — boasts a large following himself for playing author C.S. Forester’s fictional 18th/19th century British naval hero Horatio Hornblower in a series of eight impressively-produced Emmy-winning TV movies that aired on A&E from 1998 to 2003. Gruffudd, 37, loves being identified with the role — and would love to be playing it for years to come. The Welsh actor — whose other film credits include Titanic, Black Hawk Down, and King Arthur — tells EW that if Ringer is a smash, he’d like to leverage his career heat to rally interest and funding for more Hornblower films, which he says are quite expensive to make.  READ FULL STORY »
