When Glee’s over-achieving Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.) gets an “Asian F,” otherwise known as an A-, his father (Keong Sim) schedules a meeting with Principal Figgins. No surprise, the New Directions, and Tina in particular, take the blame for Mike’s “failure.” Enjoy our sneak peek at this Changtastic episode airing Oct. 4 on Fox.

Looking forward to getting to know Mike Chang more. Also, revisiting Tina Cohen’s vampire ways – awesome!
Flame AND spam? Internet, U soo funny!

Very funny! Still, is that the only plot direction they can come up with? So-and-so must quit Glee?
It’s all they got to work with these days, that and trying to win nationals. BORRRRRING.
if its boring then don’t waste your time making mean comments….just keep your comments to yourself!
Nathan has the right to make any comment he wants, it’s his time and he can use it anyway see’s fit. Fan’s of the show who don’t like to hear negative comments should find a board that caters to this ridculous show.
Love Mike Chang! Thank you Ryan Murphy for this storyline!
How about telling us what the actor’s name is while you’re posting this clip?
Thank you – take the hint EW wh0res!!
Harry Shum Jr., I believe!
How about you read the article they posted a week ago naming all the actors for Mike Chang’s parents and Emma’s parents? Oh, reading is just a thought. Might be a little too hard of work for you.
It’s bad journalistic form not to at least link back to it, which they now do.
Who gives a flying -UCK!!! He’s just another ( ? ).
Dad looks Korean to me. And supposedly the mom is Tamlyn Tomita, who is Japanese. Didn’t know that a Korean + Japanese = Chinese.
I found the whole “an A- is an Asian F” thing to be an eensy bit racist anyway, so I don’t think they really care if they got the right denominations to play his parents.
thats not racist i know have few asian friends thats how they feel
I agree about “Asian F”. I understand that it’s done in humor, but this show spends so much time trying to be a PSA for gay rights that they shouldn’t be poking fun at other stereotyped groups.
Totally not racist, this is true for many Asian families (not all, but a lot), including my family.
Sorry but an A- is not an asian F. And Asian F is a B. An A- is “why didn’t you work harder at getting an A+?”
I’m Asian, and I didn’t find it to be racist. On the contrary, this was totally true in my family when I was in junior high/high school. Anything less than an A was deemed unacceptable.
I’m half-Korean, and no it’s not racist at all. Asian parents can be very much like this. Go read about “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” if you don’t believe us. Glee is surreal and exaggerated in most aspects, but many aspects of teenager life it touches upon (the casual cruelty, overly strict Asian parents) is all too real.
Well, I don’t like it when they get English actors to play Irish guys. Or a when an Dane plays a Swede. Or a Hmong plays Vietnamese.
I also don’t like it when people don’t get that a comedy show makes fun of stereotypes. You many have noticed, Glee is not a documentary.
Calling it an “Asian F” might not have bothered me as much if there haven’t been so much “Asian this” and “Asian that” last season. We get it! They’re Asian!
I agree. Positive stereotypes are simply just as unacceptable as negative ones. Problem is, real racists can find a way to turn the positives into negatives at any time. I find it offensive – even more so – when my children’s friends who are Asian make stereotypical jokes or his Indian friends make “Brown” jokes. Jews have come a long way to stop telling Jewish American Princess (JAP) jokes. Recognizing your differences on this show is great. Stereotyping for a laugh is wrong. And I am MOST offended by the Jewish character who walks around with the microphone with the stereotype “Jew-fro”, Hebrew letters on his mike, and makes other offensive comments all for a laugh. I never knew anyone who ever came close to representing such a person in the Jewish community and yet, this is clearly a stereotype that more racist elements in our society have used. So grow a pair and write characters who represent the outcasts you are trying to tell stories about but without the cheap gimmicks for a laugh! It is offensive and needs to stop.
I agree about the stereotyping of ‘asian-ness.’ Dear Glee, I put up with it for a while, but I’m starting to realize that you’re not championing marginalized kids in America (like racial minorities). You’re exploiting them.
That’s some crazy Asian math that only they can understand.
They should cast the best actors that audition. If that actor is Korean instead of Chinese it shouldn’t be that big of a deal.
except that Mike is chinese so he has parents who are a complete different ethnic background. seems like a big deal to me.
uh, no. if a really amazing white, latino, or black actor had come to audition, would they have gotten the role? we are talking about entirely different countries here, and im sorry, but i dont think it would be that hard to find someone who is actually Chinese to play the part
the only people who say this are white people.
hahahahahaha!
Is E.W getting paid to leep promoting this sh1t or is Ryan murphy blowing someone at their magazine?????
I’m beginning to think Ryan Murphy owns this magazine.
Why does EW still think this show is a big deal? Does anyone at that magazine check out the ratings….they’re the lowest since season 1.
Yet it’s still the highest rated teen show around and was big enough to spawn an International tour. Lots of shows bleed viewers three years in but I’d say Glee still is a pretty big deal.
Why his dad reminds me of Chuck Bass? haha
One More…What? What does Mike Chang Jr want one more of?!?!?!?!
He wants One More Chang.
Always great to see more Asians on TV and until I see this episode I will withhold judgment that this “Asian F” storyline smacks of racism since I’m sure that if Ryan Murphy wouldn’t tolerate stereotypes of gays, he wouldn’t tolerate ones about Asians either. Still, between this and 2 Broke Girls’ incredibly offensive portrayal of the Asian diner owner and the really horrible joke about criticizing an Asian in the last episode, I can’t help but wonder if more opportunities for Asians isn’t worth it if it’s to perpetuate racist caricatures. By the way, kudos to Hawaii Five-0 for its many Asian roles.
Happened to me, an Asian, and many others I know. So they shouldn’t portray something in the show that has happened to many Asians just because it hasn’t happened to others and some others think it’s an “offensive stereotype”?
Ryan Murphy wouldn’t tolerate stereotypes of gays???
Kurt Hummel is a nothing if not a stereotypical gay. Loves fashion, Project Runway, best friends all girls. What show are you watching, Ann?
“…I’m sure that if Ryan Murphy wouldn’t tolerate stereotypes of gays…” – Ann
Ryan Murphy executes every good and bad stereotype of gays on Glee.
I am so excited to see that Mike Chang is finally getting a storyline. Also that they sre getting back to Figgins believeing that Tina is a vampire. I always thought that was funny.
awww poor Mike!
Love, love Mike Chang very happy he is finally getting a story line…Love the Asian F line…& kiss my grits.
As a one-liner, the Asian F thing was kinda funny, but making such a big deal out of it makes it not funny and a little bit racist IMO.
Interesting how many Asians are saying this isn’t racist at all, do think people tend to be a bit fast to label “racist” sometimes. Reminds me of Margaret Cho’s old routine where her mother sounds like some Asian soap queen, people complain and she responds “I’m not doing a sterotype, that’s how my mom sounds.”
I don’t really have an issue with the aisan sterotype (they exist for a reason) but has the dialogue for Glee always been this eye-rollingly cliched and obvious?
