Dexter has been a ratings marvel for Showtime, bucking the usual TV pattern and growing every season. Sunday’s sixth season opener was no exception: Dexter returned to 2.2 million viewers — up 24 percent from last year and ranking as the show’s biggest opening yet.

Meanwhile the network’s new terrorism drama Homeland also performed well by Showtime standards. Benefiting from its strong Dexter lead-in, the drama scored 1.1 million viewers during its premiere episode, which makes it the most-watched hour-long drama in eight years on the network. If you include OnDemand and online viewing, a total of 1.4 million viewers checked out the show. Overall, a strong start for Showtime’s Sunday night dramas despite opening against the intensely competitive second week of the broadcast season.

  • The Realist

    Best show on television

    • Andrew

      Nah Breaking Bad is

      • Nadz

its that person opinion so i see no need for you to reply to a person’s opinion

      • T

Both great shows although season 5 of Dexter hurt it it’s still great

      • @Nadz

Andrew is allowed to have a “person opinion,” too…

      • MOn

no, I think we can all agree that he’s not.

      • yep

yeah, Andrew is correct…(example: watch breaking bad episode from last nite)

      • Brady

        Andrew is most definitely correct.

      • meme

i like Dexter but it’s not nearly the best show on television. I can go with Breaking Bad though

    • BRIONY

      AGREE!! Love, love, LOVE Dexter!!

  • TH.

wow was HOMELAND great. Claire Danes was unbelievable.

    • Ash

Oh yeah, Homeland is the best new show of the season by far

  • Hamlinator

Did you mean to say that Homeland was the most-watched drama *series premiere* in eight years?

    • Rick

Yeah. The EW writers are messing up consistently these days.

  • Dream Out Loud

    Hammer Time.

    • rimewire

No wonder the season premiere scored high, it had Dexter dancing. You can’t beat that.

      XXXxx

    • Rachel

Lol! Too funny! Hammer time! Great show!

  • Buffy Freak

I love Dexter…but please stop trying to make us care about LaGuerta and Bautista storylines…it’s beyond absurd that Dexter would hire Bautista’s sister as Harrison’s nannny…no way he’d want the relative of one of his coworkers in his home all the time.

    • Melissa in CA

      Agree with you 100%.
Minor SPOILER ALERT!! In the first Dexter book, LaGuerta was killed at the end and Dexter let his brother live. I wish they hadn’t made those changes for TV.

    • Dexfan

      Good point.

  • Melissa in CA

Last night and this coming Sunday are the best nights TV has seen all year, with the return of Dexter and the end of the Breaking Bad season!

    • hlynn

      Melissa in CA –
Hope you are reading this because Breaking Bad still has one more episode left next week. Don’t miss it! :)

  • Joe

DEXTER ROCKS! Now, if only the Academy would send an Emmy Michael C. Hall’s way one of these years…

    • hlynn

      He did win….for Season 5.

      • hlynn

Oops! That was the Golden Globes not the Emmy’s. You are right! He deserves an Emmy but while Bryan Cranston is still alive and kicking he will win for sure next year! Here’s hoping it goes to Michael the year after next! :)

      • Joe

No, Kyle Chandler won for Friday Night Lights. Hall has not won for either Dexter or Six Feet Under.

      • Joe

Actually, you might be thinking about the Golden Globe he won for Season 4. But no Emmy.

  • Cynical Optimist

TV is stupid, you are all stupid.

  • Robert

This has to be the worst show on the air.

A bloodstain pattern analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a serial killer.

How stupid can a storyline get.

    • TommyT

      You are so right!!!!!

    • TorontoTom

Have you actually watched the show?!? What you wrote is EXACTLY what is so BRILLIANT about Dexter – he’s a monster but you are made to care about him, to root for him. It’s pretty amazing that the writing and acting can make you feel something you know is wrong but you feel it anyway. If you haven’t watched it, give it a try. I think you’ll see what I mean.

    • Rich

I know!! As stupid as a science teacher who COOKS CRYSTAL METH!! Right?? Or a Mafia boss who also has a family and likes Journey!! AM I RIGHT???

    • jodipo

So what especially clever storyline do you suggest oh perfect one who we should all emulate?

  • Bill

    Lame

  • ARTOD

Here is a spoiler. Dexter sucks.

  • Karen S.

Adam 12, now there was a cop show!

  • ……

yes Breaking Bad is the best show on television..but Dexter is up there..glad for the numbers, well deserved 8)

  • Ariel

follow me @HR4girl and I’ll follow you back

  • Nope

You’re not factoring that the premiere was leaked over a week before which should of hurt the ratings. Glad they still thrived.

    • MOn

oh boy, where is grammar police when you need it

      • @MOn

Do you mean, “where ARE the grammar police when you need THEM?”

      • Andrew

See I told you I am right and most people here agree with me. I am allowed to have an opinion and most people likewise share the same view that Breaking Bad is superior. Thank you
