What mischief is Phil about to get into now?

EW has learned exclusively that Kevin Hart (Little Fockers) has signed on for a guest-starring role on Modern Family. He’ll play Andre, a new neighbor of Phil Dunphy who happens to be a physician. The 32-year-old comedian will see a familiar face when he begins production on the ABC comedy: He co-starred opposite Sofia Vergara in the 2004 movie Soul Plane.

Recently, Hart and his Hartbeat Productions notched an unexpected victory at the box office with his debut standup film Laugh at My Pain, which follows his recent national tour run and a stop in his hometown of Philadelphia. It debuted inside of the box office top 10 ranking and pulled in nearly $2 million, in just 97 theaters, for an impressive per-location gross of $20,619. The film only cost $750,000 to make.

Hart has appeared in several Comedy Central specials and hosted the 2011 BET Awards. His other film credits include the movies Krod Mondoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire, Death at a Funeral, and Epic Movie.

I think he is pretty hilarious. He should be pretty funny opposite Phil.

  • David

    Oh no, he’s a loser!

    • Justin

      WRONG!!! He’s hilarious!!

      • David

He really killed it on the VMAs!

      • David

Not to mention his hysterical sitcom, “The Big House.”

  • RCS

I hope this isn’t a “Jump the Shark” moment.

I’m more concerned the show is trying too hard to make sure it has ALL ethnic & multi-cultural backgrounds covered. Which is odd since it already has a Latino character and a gay couple. It kinda feels like “we need a black guy”. It feels odd when a show has ONE OBLIGATORY black character as opposed to a whole fleshed-out family or group of them. Now please everyone don’t yell at me.

      • ugly nikki

He has a huge following. There isn’t a hotter comedian out right now. Look for the numbers to get a bump just because he is going to be on the show. I don’t think it was done for PC reasons. Its the bottom line, it always is!

Im not gonna rip you but I am not sure why you would say that? The show has been on for 3 years, Its a critical hit and a ratings hit. YOU really think the people that run the show are like “we could do better if we get a black guy?” WTF?! He is a guest star, not a regular. What he may be on the show for 1-2 episodes? And your first response was the show needs a black guy? WOW!

      • Melting Pot

Oh please, I like shows and movies to look like real life. Go watch re-runs of Friends and Sex and the City.

      • ugly nikki

So anyway, people who may have never watched the show may tune in to see the current “it” guy and find that they like show, even when he isn’t on it. And we are talking black people in case that isn’t clear.

      • dawnita spears

so just because your ethnicity is represented you think thats enough ? smh get a life

      • Acaseofgeo

As is usual no one really gets the point. I CLEARLY wrote that it feels odd when a show has ONE OBLIGATORY BLACK person. I’ve seen this on how many shows. And they don’t ever seem to have fully fleshed out family or community around them. That was just my impression on this particular post. Not every post needs to be gang-banged guys.

      • OllieJ

        1. The appropriate phrase is “token Black guy”
        2. Andre clearly says towards the end “hey honey, the neighbor is really cool.” or something to that effect which negates your “community” comment.
        3. It was a GUEST SPOT! In the same way that Shorty is a recurring guest spot to represent the Italians.
        4. Stop bending over to put your foot in your mouth and you won’t get gang-banged.

    • Smith

Can someone PLEASE invent a new term instead of using the same old lame “jump the shark”. Please and thank you.

  • Sally in Chicago

Andre? That’s so stereotypical for a black man. why not Kevin? or Robert?

    • Shut your piehole!

You do realized you have the same name as the fat woman from “All In The Family” begging for money to end famine.

    • Leroy

      How about Jamal

    • Sara

      How about Treyvan

      • ugly nikki

  • Lena120

Kevin Hart is hilarious! I love him. Can’t wait!

  • Nathan

Wonder if he still shops at Smart Tech?

    • Imstilltoni

      It don’t even matter!!!

  • endo

What happened to the old neighbor that Luke befriended? Someone should really check on him.

  • Jon

I am not really familiar with Hart except from commercials for his specials. I don’t have an opinion on this either way.
I just wanted to say that I *really* wish they would bring back Matt Besser from the Halloween episode. Besser = funny

  • bill

my bestfriend màkes $ 77 an hour on the computér. She has beén out of job for 9 months but last month her check was $ 7487 just workìng on the computér for a féw hours. Go here CashHàrd.cóm

  • yep

    great move!

  • Luke

I love that they’re hiring comedians to guest star. I hate it whenever dramatic actors guest star on comedies because they have no comedic timing (like Edward Norton’s horrible stint on MF).

    • Miranda

I don’t think it was that Edward Norton lacked comic timing so much as it was a poorly written character.

  • DaDude

Kevin Hart is funny. One of the funniest parts in 40 Year Old Virgin was with him in it.

  • Mecca

Ugly nikki, you are correct…this sista we’ll be watching only because Kevin Hart we’ll be in it.

    • cocoachica

Mecca, you should give the show a chance regardless. I’m a sista too, and I’ve been watching since the first episode. Its hilarious.

  • Chill

The key word for those that cant understand the move that abc is making by adding Kevin Hart is…MODERN…the show is called Modern Family…the shows core is based on a very wide genre of belief and ethnicity which play off one another well considering the awards won…Adding Kevin Hart is a good move, not a “jump the shark,” moment.

  • Chill

    …Oh yea….and the show is F***ING HILARIOUS!!!!!
