'New Girl' still shines for Fox, 'The Biggest Loser' lives up to title on NBC

Viewers continue to take a shine to the New Girl: The Fox comedy, together with more original episodes of Glee and Raising Hope, helped Fox win its third consecutive Tuesday among adults 18-49, according to preliminary results. The Zooey Deschanel laugher (8.6 million) earned a 4.3 rating/11 share in the demo — down 4 percent from last week but still the highest rated program for the night.

Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million viewers.

Glee (8.2 million) was down 5 percent to a 3.5/10 and Raising Hope (6.5 million) posted a 2.9/7, which was even with last week.

NBC, meanwhile, got spanked from 8 to 10 p.m. thanks to The Biggest Loser, which dropped 13 percent to a 2.0/5 — its lowest-rated fall telecast ever. It averaged 5.6 million viewers. It’s a drag of a lead-in for Parenthood, which at least managed to hold on to the same rating but still lost 9 percent of those adults versus what it did last week. Dang, the Jason Katims series (4.9 million) needs a much better partner on Tuesdays.

The ever-trusty NCIS block continued to flex its muscles from 8-10 — earning a 4.1/12 and 3.4/8. (NCIS averaged 18.8 mil while NCIS: LA got 14.6 mil). Unforgettable grabbed 11.4 million viewers and a 2.4/6, down 4 percent from last week but still decent enough to keep it out of the early cancellation trash bin.

After a repeat of the performance show (1.7/5), the Dancing With the Stars results show earned a 2.8/7 — down 3 percent — and 14.8 million viewers while Body of Proof was up 17 percent to a 2.1/5 and 10.4 million.

Bottom line: Fox won the night with a 3.6/9, followed by CBS ( 3.3/9), ABC (2.2/6) and NBC (2.0/5). In viewers, CBS won with 14.9 million, followed by ABC (11.3 million), Fox (7.9 million), and NBC (5.4 million).

What a sad TV world we live in.

    • @Duhr

Well if you hate it so much pick up a f@cking book you pathetic idiot. Nobodys forcing you to watch or comment about it.

      • Duhr

What a sad, sad world you live in.

      • Matthew Miller

Why is everyone’s response always to pick up a book? As if reading is some great cure-all for modern ignorance. I read at least 2 books a week and watch a lot of TV. I don’t think it’s just a choice between books and TV. How about playing with your kids? Volunteering? Cleaning your house? Doing something creative?

      • saline

        Hey Matt, get a job.

      • robin

        how about some originality

      • Guy Fieri

You can always watch me. I’m a television God.

@ @Duhr. Dude chill out and take your meds.

    • elle

Sad ? Really? Sunday Is packed with great shows, ( breaking bad, dexter, empire boardwalk, amazing race) and now homeland. Currently I catch up on viewing “Sunday shows” and finish just in time to watch Sons of Anarchy. Its not so sad…..

Please help. How is The New Girl the highest rated program for the night with 8.3 million if NCIS got 18.8 million and NCIS LA got 14.3 and ABC’s shows also got over 10 million each. How did Fox win the night if none of it’s programs cracked 10 mill? Are the fox shows the only ones in this article that listed the 18-49 audience only, while all the others are TOTAL viewers?

      • Tim

New Girl is the highest rated program based on 18-49 audience. New Girl got 4.3, while NCIS only got 4.1.

      • Dave

Can people stop asking this question every freakin day? They’re talking about the 18-49 demo. Not that hard to figure out. You don’t like it, too bad. That’s just the way TV ratings are reported. 18-49 demo is what advertisers care about whether we like it or not.

      • Anti-troll

Counter programming. Not everyone likes crime procedurals.

The problem is when networks pit shows like Fringe and Supernatural against each other which largely share an audience.

      • shawshank

But NCIS also got a 12 share over New Girl’s 11 share. Is this “share” not part of the 18-49 demographic? Thanks for explaining this.

      • Pat

Share gives percent of all people watching any program at that time. You can’t compare the share of programs on at different times.

  • K

Let’s be honest. TNG has, like, no scripted competition. As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing of quality to watch on Tuesday nights outside of Raising Hope.

    • Molly

I agree. Reruns of Star Trek: TNG are infinitely better than all other shows on Tuesday.

      • Scott

        HA! Thought the same thing…lol

      • kimberly

LOL! That’s what I first thought of. The whole series is on Netflix instant viewing. I’ve been rewatching the entire series and it’s still pretty amazing.

      • ^

Breaking Bad is on streaming. What else would you need?

  • James Griffin

Love Zooey Deschanel, very attractive and sexy. Good for her to have a series that is such a big hit. She’s a very talented actress. It’s an exceptional performance, just wonderful.

    • ^

Fox interns are working overtime again this week.

      • Hollywood Plant

        Yes we are.

      • robin

        Zooey always kicks butt

      • GG

yeah. they don’t pay those kids enough!!

    • Zach

She’s the only celebrity I feel an attraction to, but I don’t equate that quality with any acting skills.

I didn’t really like the episode last week compared to the premiere. Haven’t watched the newest one yet as a result.

      • GG

that’s because the writing in all three of these episodes sucked. i’m actually not sure why people liked the pilot in the first place. but it doesn’t look like it’s getting any better.

  • New Girl Fan

I love the New Girl and I think it’s great to see a female character on t.v who is quirky and original and excentric.I am sick of seeing the same lonly, whiny desperate- to- get- married 25 year old on all the other sitcoms. Atleast Jess likes herself and most female characters on t.v don’t seem to.

    • Will

I am sick of seeing people with a high school education who don’t know how to spell correctly.

      • New Girl SUX

i have no reason to believe that this person has a high school education. especially since they think that having a female character who likes themselves in and of itself equates good television.

      • Sue1

I’m sick of people who think correcting spelling errors shows intelligence, and people who don’t know the meaning of the word “opinion” .

  • winston mize

no mention of cw’s ringer again this week? i know it’s not on the big four but geez.

    • T

I agree I check ratings for ringer but it gets ignored!

    • Eshia

they mentioned it in a post yesterday. It didn’t do well.

    • kate middleton

Both CW shows stunk it up last night (0.6 rating). BUT, Ringer had more viewers than 90210. Same on Monday where Hart of Dixie built on Gossip Girl’s lead in. Hopefully that’s a good sign for both shows. It looks like Ringer is gonna get really good next week.

      • A

More evidence that CW just blindly supports shows like Gossip Girl and 90210. They don’t get good ratings, yet the network overhypes them and continues to renew them. When are these shows going to get canceled?

  • @Duhr

I wasn’t joking. Pick up a f@cking book sometimes dude.

    • Duhr

I wasn’t joking either. Get away from the TV sometime.

      • @Duhr

Right, because you’re on the EW website commenting on how much you hate t.v because your life is so full? What does your girlfriend think of how you spend your time? I know you don”t have one I was just kidding.

      • Duhr

        You are such a riot!
I’m sure your mom’s basement makes your life just as full!
I sure hope you don’t mind all of the noise she and I are making while you’re typing.

      • robin

honestly there isn’t much on tv worth watch at the moment

      • Ames

Why is the first response a personal attack?

    • ^

She’s mad that EW used her picture above without her permission.

  • Al

The Biggest Loser should not be a two hour show.

    • Melissa in CA

I totally agree. Cut out all of Anna’s scenes and the product placement and it would easily be an hour. I really do NOT like Anna! And the way they’re editting her to shove her down my throat. I liked it better when the trainers just observed the weigh-ins and didn’t comment on every single contestant.

    • ST

I think they should just kill The Biggest Loser period, move their Thursday night comedies to Tuesdays (less competition) and leave Parenthood on afterwards. This would give NBC’s Thursday night comedies a chance to shine and would work well with Parenthood on afterwards. They can revisit trying to make Thursday nights “Must See TV” in a couple of seasons.

      • Carly

If only NBC had thhe brains do this. I know they’re desperately grasping at “Must See TV Thursdays” or “Comedy Night Done Right” or whatever they call it, but Thursday night competition is tough. I would also switch out Whitney for Up All Night, which would be a great lead-in for Parenthood.

    • dan

Hey NBC- cut it down to an hour. If it wasn’t for my TiVO I wouldn’t watch it. Everytime they come back from commercial they recap what happened before the break especially after the one hour mark. Geez

      • Melissa in CA

That post-commercial recap drives me bonkers!!! I wouldn’t watch if it weren’t for my DVR either. But NBC can’t cut it down, or cancel it, because they don’t have anything else to fill those 2 hours.

      • Sam

Well, they have a lot of midseason show that are probably ready to go like that Betty White reality show, new Fear Factor, and Minute to win it. Its only 2 hours since the ratings are great in NBC poor condition.

    • Aura Lee

Dare to dream maybe it will actually be cancelled. Ever since TBL became one long Extra Sugar Free Gum/ziploc steam fresh commercial It’s just unappealing. Poor NBC though won’t have anything to fill the empty two hours! (TWO HOURS)

      • Melissa in CA

OMG, was that a Brick whisper?! Awesome if it was!

  • Candice

New Girl is overrated.. the only reason a lot of biatches watch this show is Zooey fu@king Deschanel. Fox should fire their writers. with more solid script the show would be way better.

  • abadstroller

Jess has that Liz Lemon vibe without the guilt and self-loathing. Geek Gals, unite!

  • Leslie

New Girl isn’t funny, what exactly are those people laughing at? As for Raising Hope,it’s intelligent and hilarious glad it did better this week. Ringer sucks so bad.

    • New Girl SUX

I don’t know. I have no problem with dorky quirky girl characters. i’m a quirky dork in real life. but New Girl is just not a believable show and the characters have no chemistry and aren’t likeable. add that to “jokes” that are so obvious they are lame and i find nothing enjoyable about the show. i tried and nothing in the first three eps makes me want to come back for more. i’m officially done with the show. and even if i hear good things, i won’t come back because i won’t believe it. all the critics and viewers that are praising it while it’s crappy leads me to believe that they are non discerning crack smokers and will laugh at anything.

  • Buffy Freak

I really wish more people would discover Parenthood. Why would people would rather watch another bland formulaic procedural like Unforgettable? And I tried to watch New Girl but I couldn’t get into it at all.

I like Parenthood! I agree about the procedurals. I just call them all “morgue shows”.

    • Ryan

Yes yes! Parenthood is my favorite thing on TV right now and I just wish more people would discover how absolutely amazing, touching, poignant, funny and real it is. WATCH THIS SHOW!

    • jones

Parenthood is a great show, but it needs a stronger lead in and more publicity. I forget it is still on.

    • Melissa in CA

I have heard that Parenthood is good, but I don’t have time to catch up on previous seasons and episodes. Is it something I can pick up now and not be too lost?

      • Buffy Freak

Yeah pretty much….there might be some things but it’s not a complex web of a show like Lost or 24…

      • Kim

Melissa, probably so. Nothing complicated, just good storytelling. The familes should be easy to figure out.

      • Melissa in CA

Great, thanks, I’ll check it out. My Tuesday nights are lacking.

    • New Girl SUX

i tried parenthood when it first came out. i’m a lauren graham fan and like a lot of the actors that are in the show and hoped i would love it. but i didn’t like the family- their personalities, dynamics- and didn’t care about their plot lines. so maybe the problem isn’t that people haven’t discovered parenthood. it’s just that the ones that would connect with it already have! (and i don’t watch most procedurals or stupid laugh track comedies. it’s not either or for most people nowadays. if i don’t like what’s on, i watch something onDemand, or on the DVR, or on the web. Or sometimes i do that oh so crazy thing of reading a book or going out with friends!

What’s happening to Glee!!!???!?!?!?!?!?!?!? GLEE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? GLEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • FormerGleek

What happened to Glee was that it went from spins on popular current music to mostly Broadway. Not going to keep your audience that way.

      • NoShowTunes

And lost a few central characters along the way…remember Finn from the pilot? ..plus did all the things in the first three episdoes that said was going to avoid such as guest stars and pointless plotlines.

      • Anonymous

No, that’s not it. Most of the core fans adore Broadway and resent Friday. Besides, they do a Broadway song like once every few weeks tops. The ratings are down because the writing last season was so awful, it destroyed the characters people liked in the beginning.

    • Carolyn

Season 3 of Glee has been great so far. Maybe the best season ever. The stories make sense and the music actually moves the plot along.

  • Woot

I like how NCIS got over 10 million more viewers than New Girl, yet was about even with New Girl in terms of the Demo rating. Old people love CBS!

    • Elizabeth

I think CBS is the oldest network, when those folks were young it was the only channel that was on. Thats why they love it so much they grew up with with it. It’s also the network almost everyone in the country have so it will always win the mass viewership. Their NCIS and CSI clones as well as their comedies are all awful.

    • Jenni

I watch NCIS and I am not old. It gets viewers that are older and younger. I also like the New Girl too. Zooey Deschanel is about my age and is very relatable and funny.

      • New Girl SUX

        New Girl sucks.

    • Gee

I guess old is the new 25 as I like NCIS

  • Lena

Parenthood is an awesome show. The third season has been great so far. I wish more people would do themselve a favor and give this show a chance.

    • Pam

Can’t do it until they get rid of Lauren Graham. For some reason I can’t quite put a finger on, she bugs the s**t outta me. I can’t stand watching her.

  • dan

Hey NBC- cut it down to an hour. If it wasn’t for my TiVO I wouldn’t watch it. Everytime they come back from commercial they recap what happened before the break especially after the one hour mark. Geez
