'American Horror Story' scares up strong FX ratings

american-horror-story

Ryan Murphy’s latest series, American Horror Story, got off to a solid-to-strong start on Wednesday night on FX, improving upon most of FX’s previous successful debuts.

The first airing delivered 3.2 million viewers and a 2 million adults 18-49 last night, tying the series debut of Nip/Tuck in the demo and finishing 33 percent higher than the first season premiere of Sons of Anarchy. Still, the debut was down from the first episode of Justified (4.2 million total viewers, though tied AHS in the demo), and The Shield (4.8 million).

Across three airings last night, AHS delivered a total of 5 million viewers and a 3.2 million adults 18-49.

BEST new show I’ve seen in a long time!!

    • Dexter

I agree…tv sitcoms have become so dull. I usually turn to cable for any sort of entertainment.

    • Roger

I like the younger version of that maid!

      • Johnson

I watched this. Not very scary or impressive as far as true horror stories have been the past. I don’t know really what was actually interesting about it. Seemed very boring to me.

  • JP

No shocker cause it was actually pretty interesting. They sure packed a lot into one episode. Can’t wait to keep watching. . .

I hate to be negative about it but I just have the feeling it’s going to get weak real quick. So much was put into the first episode, the subject matter and Ryan Murphy shows always lose their luster real quick in my opinion. Those are the reasons why I’m worried for it.

It will probably go up next week too. I don’t know one person who isn’t coming back to watch next week and word of mouth will get others checking it out. We have “Fringe”, “Walking Dead” returning soon, and this one. WOOT!

  • mark

Yep, everyone at my office was talking about it today.

  • Jay

Sick, twisted, vulgar and perverse. More, please!

      Love the comment!

  • Jim

I was expecting higher ratings. I hope they grow because I really liked it.

A great show for the A.D.D. generation!!

  • batlizard

This show reminded me of something that could have been on HBO or Starz — wow, I was shocked at some of the language, scenes, etc…but loved it! Can’t wait for next week!

I really wanted to like to like this show, but the storyline was too choppy and didn’t flow from one scene to the next. There was no continuity at all, which lost the suspense factor. Too bad. Great idea… poor execution.

  • Joy

Great show – a combo of Stephen King and Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks couldn’t be as edgy cause it was on network tv – but all sorts of Stephen King threads – like the two dead twins.

  • Christian

No way this show will last. It’s too ‘out there’ for American audiences.

Initial ratings were strong but may not last. I love edgy, dark horror, but that show was just SO damn bad! It was full of generic, over used horror tropes and suffered from a severe lack of creativity and interesting characters. They tried desperately to be edgy, but without a coherent story or script, it just didn’t work. There may be an idea in that muddled mess somewhere, but it’s not worth hanging around 10 weeks to find out. I won’t be watching again.

Agree with you. I didn’t think it was that good, or that scary. I appreciate that it’s a new concept for TV, but I don’t trust Ryan Murphy to do anything well long-term.

    • KatherineM

Maybe I’m too old and jaded. I thought the show was poorly done, and I love most all the HBO/FX/AMC type shows. It was far more copycat edgy than original. I wasn’t ever even mildly surprised, and the fact that they had to throw every shock element at me in the first show to get a rise that never happened does not bode well for me.

    • Karen

Jessica Lange was awesome… she was worth a watch alone

    • KC

Thank you! I’m glad to see people have some sense. The show was terrible. They just threw as many shocks as possible into one hour, with no real regard for story.

    • Deborah

      They cancelled “Damages” for this?!

  • Gina

What no comments about it turning sour in season 2 because Ryan Murphy is attached? I’m shocked. Loved the premiere episode. More please!

    • Dave

Judging from the over-the-top pilot, it’ll probably turn sour even before season 2.

      • Kris

LOL that’s what I was thinking. If he can make a consistant season out of this, I will be shocked.

    • Todd

It turned sour during the pilot! It’s a bad show, but it certainly was watchable. That’s more than I can say about Murphy’s other works.
