'So You Think You Can Dance' renewed, but who are the judges?

Fox has picked up a ninth season of So You Think You Can Dance but it’s unclear — for now — who will fill out the judges’ panel.

The network has no further information other than to say the show has been a “huge part of our success.” The show will return next summer.

“We are excited to bring the series and an incredible set of new dancers back for another fantastic season,” said Mike Darnell, Fox’s President of Alternative Entertainment, in a statement.  The show ranked No. 1 in its time period among adults 18-49 this summer.

Nigel and Mary need to be back. It was nice seeing other stars rotate in the third seat.

    • Jethro

Totally disagree with you Brian, do you watch the show? The rotating Judge did nothing for the show. Regardless who it was, the Judges sounded like they were reading from a script, saying the same thing about the performance but never gave real criticism.

And please, please, don’t bring back Nigel [even though it’s really his show], he has his favorites, chooses who he wants and blabs on and on and on…..

Mary should rotate her chair, every week runs one’s nerves. Sorry, but I am probably in the minority and will get negative feedback.

      • Sally

No disagreement with me Jethro. The rotating judge – especially the non-dance experts – gave very little critique. Mary’s voice grates on my nerves like nails on chalkboard. And Nigel picks favorites and doesn’t even attempt to hide the fact.

ALTHOUGH if any show needs a judge makeover it would be Dancing with the Stars. Now THAT show has horrendous judges.

      • BJG

I agree with Jethro about Mary. A little of her goes a long way. There should be two constant judges and a third rotating one. No more celebrities. Also, fewer lyrical/contemporary/jazz dances that try to make me cry.

      • PIMB

I love Mary. She gives actual constuctive criticsm. And she is positive. She didn’t scream as much this season. LOVE YA MARY! Please no Tyce or Mia as a judge.

      • Kim

Never cared much for Mary, but she did tone it down this past season and became more bearable. Nigel’s a blowhard. No more celebrity judges unless they actually have something to do with dance. I mean, Katie Holmes? If she’s a “dancer”, then hey, so am I! She can’t even put two words together that make sense. “I loved it when you jumped up…”. Really? Also, please, please, PLEASE get rid of that horrid stage. I had to use my VCR to record Survivor because my DVR is full and when the show was over, on came an old partly recorded over episode from season 5. Oh, what a difference that old stage made. You don’t realize how much until you watch an old episode.

They need to cut out the guest judge thing, and bring it back to how it originally was a few seasons ago: Nigel, Mary, and a rotating third spot for another choreographer associated with the show. Not special guest star rating stunts.

      • Deb

I totally agree. The celebrijudges were too soft, too in for their own purposes, etc. Bring back rotating choreographers — of put the awesome Debbie Allen on permanently. Either way, as much as I love Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the dancers should be judged by people who know something about dance.

      • Psac

Totally agree as well. Definitely the best format. Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Lil C, Mia, Travis Wall, etc., all great as occasional judges.

    • blah

I hate Mary! She screams too much and just makes it hard to watch. Cut her please!!!!!!

Given the international versions of SYTYCD have been cancelled, this is great news!

    • Eli

I’m sorry, but the Dutch/Belgian SYTYCD is still going strong. Don’t give up hope yet! :P

  • V

This show is awesomesauce. So glad to hear it will be back for more.

  • waffles

If Nigel and Mary aren’t there, it will be it’s final season.

  • jets

So glad! I was worried. This is an important season; it somehow needs to get better ratings the season 8, to set up for the epic ALL all stars aniversary season 10.

  • whatevs

I didn’t really care for the 4 judge format. The rotating celebrities who fill that seat are often too nice to tell someone they weren’t good. It’s just a waste of time.

  • plushpuppy

I can’t stand Nigel and would be glad to see him leave. I think it would freshen up the show.

    • D

Never going to happen. That show is his baby.

      • Zakry

  • Betty

I am glad that the show has been renewed for another season. it’s my favorite show to watch in the summer.

    • Jethro

Over Big Brother & America’s Got Talent, oh my, where is this country going?

      • S.

Any show is better than Big Brother & American’s Got Talent.

  • Eternal Clementine

I liked the rotating third judge but I would also love it if they gave the ever so awesome Jesse Tyler Ferguson a permanant spot =)

  • Brandon

So glad the show is back for another season. I hope more people watch this time around. It’s my favorite summer show, by far! I’d like to see Nigel, Mary, and Adam Shankman make up the panel.

    • D

Not Adam. At least not every week.

    • Scobes

Adam needs to stay away from the show.

  • Dave

Hopefully Nigel and Mary will be back. I know some people find Mary to be grating, but I like her. I really disliked the season where Mia took her spot.
As for the third judge, I liked the rotating format last season, but I hope they’ll tend towards using choreographers/people-who-know-about-dance as opposed to celebrities who don’t know what they’re talking about and only know how to say “good job” or just repeat what Nigel or Mary said because they can’t think of anything else to say.

    • Scobes

I hated Mia as a judge too, she needs to stay away.

  • LOL

    America loves crap.

    • Tarc

Yes, then they occasioanlly wake up and love something awesome like SYTYCD.

      • Psac

        Sweet reply. Right on.

    • Ilovecrap

Yes, and that’s why I love you!

  • Jacob

For the judges…put Mary back on as head judge and have two seats-a VIP guest (Janet Jackson, Kenny Ortega, Debbie Allen etc.) and an All-Star, past runner-up and winner (Twitch, Melody, Benji, etc). It’s time for Nigel to be a producer.

    • Meg

Ooh, I like this idea with the All-Stars as judges. I’m not too keen on the idea of having contestants dance with all-stars–it takes the focus away from the contestant because everyone’s oohing and aahing over the new all-star and Pasha’s abs.

    • orville

I like the idea of an all-star on the panel every week. Keep Nigel (it’s his show after all) and Mary. I know they liked having the celebrity guest judges for name and ratings appeal, but they were mostly useless. I’d love to see some of them (especially Jesse Tyler Ferguson) do a blog on either the SYTYCD website or here on EW. But if you take away Melanie LaPatin’s blog, I’ll never forgive you.

    • Sally

I like the All star partnerships, but I also really like the idea of an All-Star as rotating judge. If anyone knows what the contestants go through every week, the All Star would be the person.

    • Kim

Yes! Great idea to rotate all-stars!

    • Effy

Great idea to bring all-stars onto the judge panel!!!Love to see them back, not only to critique but also to share the feelings as if they were on the stage.

  • Elizabeth

SYTYCD is a perfect summer show – why mess with it or not renew it. Do we need a 4th Gordon Ramsey debacle?

  • robert

as long as they stop it with the celebrity guest judges who were almost always useless, offering inane criticisms or undue praise, i’ll be fine. i think mary and nigel should be back, with a rotating roster of their experts (nappy tabs, lil c, tyce, et al.).

    • TL

Totally agree. The celebrity judges (especially Gaga and Katie Holmes) were worthless. Let the celebs perform on results night but keep them out of the judging seats.
