Michael Douglas to play Liberace in HBO movie

HBO announced today that Michael Douglas and Matt Damon will star in Behind the Candelabra, a behind-the-scenes look at the relationship between Liberace and his younger live-in lover, Scott Thorson. Directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) from a script by Richard LaGravenese (Water for Elephants), the film will feature Douglas as Liberace and Damon as Thorson.

Jerry Weintraub (Oceans 11 franchise) will executive produce. “I’ve wanted to make a film about Liberace for a very long time, and after the amazing experience I had with HBO on His Way, I knew that they were absolutely the right place for this movie,” Weintraub said in a statement. ”I am thrilled that we have the incomparable Michael Douglas to inhabit the role of Liberace, as well as the exceptional Matt Damon to play the pivotal part of Scott Thorson. Putting these two fine actors in the creative hands of Steven Soderbergh – it doesn’t get any better than that!”

The movie will start production in the summer of 2012, with locations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs.

I’ve always wanted to see Matt Damon do a movie with Matt Dillon. They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film.

It would be a great one man show. :)

My best friend has just announced her wedding with a great man who is a cele+brity!
        They met-via { Himillionaires&c;o;m }
It is nice club for rich men or pretty girls mate.
You do not need to be wealthy or famous, but you can meet your true love, it’s worthy a try.

      One of my fave actors!

Looking forward to the love scenes.

Good to see Michael still working.

  • Templar

Ridiculous casting [Douglas not Damon]. Femmy and flamboyant will be a huge stretch for Douglas even though he is a superior actor.

    • Bobby’s Robot

That’s why they call it “acting”.

      • Rison

        ***chuckle chuckle***

Femmy, flamboyant, a conservative who denied he was gay, a midwesterner … And he was “homey” with his audience who loved him for it. So I’m agreeing with Templar. Little too multi-faceted for Douglas who I don’t think can pull off the midwestern homey & conservative parts. You have to grow up in that hot mess to understand the subtlety.

We’ve known about this for about a year now…

Alfred Molina would have been a better choice, but I expect they wanted a bigger name. Even Stanley Tucci would have been better.

  • and

love michael douglas, dying to see this movie since 2008 when they announced.

  • Fatima

Wait, was this always supposed to be for HBO? A little bummed.
This has been known for ages. The casting, that is.

  • and

A little upset it will be great, also worthy of Oscar and now limited to HBO.

  • Brett

John DeLancie would have been ideal as Liberace.

  • Mark

Both men are PERFECT for the roles –
I remember when this relationship ended so publicly and this should be an amazing movie –

    Can’t wait !!

  • Zo

…and? I thought they were already filming this. I heard about the casting of Michael Douglas many months ago. But uh, I would watch this.

  • mo

michael douglas is always awesome in his movies.

  • whoadude

is there anybody who wants to see a movie about this subject. seriously.

  • L. J

I am sorry but Matt Damon is way too old to be playing anyone’s sexy young lover. The idea of these two making out is pretty gross. If it were almost anyone except Matt Damon it would be great. Maybe Diega Luna?

    • Nightwalker

what is your problem? Damon is 41 and Douglas 76 or 77. That is similiar to the ages of the actors in potential movie of Liberace and his lover.

BTW, in 2011 everyone acknowledges that Liberace was GAY even he did a song and dance about his sexuality that nobody bought. LOL!

      • Patrick

Michael Douglas just turned 67, not 77.

  • dylan

If the title is any indication, this should be awful.
