NBC buys Ryan Murphy comedy pilot

Ryan Murphy’s schedule just got a little scarier: Only a week after launching the FX drama American Horror Story, he has sold a comedy pilot to NBC, following a bidding war also involving Fox and ABC, EW has confirmed. If the single-camera project — which reportedly centers on a gay couple and the surrogate who will carry their child — is picked up by the Peacock for next fall, it could represent his fourth active series on the air. (In addition to AHS, he’s bringing you Fox’s Glee and Oxygen’s The Glee Project.)

Murphy will create and executive produce the NBC show with Glee co-exec producer Allison Adler, and the pair will co-write the pilot.

Wow a comedy about a gay couple and their surrogate? How does ryan do it, he has sooo many original ideas…. I just hope that one of the guy’s in the couple will be black too if there is one thing this show sounds like it needs is more cliche’s

Really? Thats weird. I thought the show would be about a straight couple and how hard it is living inroom a gaynice world andtravels being bullied by gays. Oh brother…retire already

memo to Ryan Murphy: Just because Modern Family is a hit does not mean that this obvious rip off will be good. Please remember that.

    • Henry

Ahh, but yet Modern Family is a rip-off of every other family sitcom in the past, they even recycle old storylines from such sitcoms. And I say this as a Ryan Murphy hater, its just grating when people try to act as though Modern Family is sooo orginal and innovating. No, its been done before.

      • Summer

I don’t think it’s all that original or innovating, but Modern Family does have some well-written scripts. They’re funny.

      • Lindsay

Yes but Modern family was the first show to feature a gay couple in a committed relationship as leads. That is clearly what NBC wants too.

      • Cat

Yes. I watch modern family every week but all of their storylines are so clichéd and predictable. In the episode last week there were 2 punchlines that i’d seen in parks and recreation season 1. I just find modern family to be a tad bland.

    • Trey

Obvious rip off? It sounds nothing like Modern Family, you idiot.

  • lo

Wild guess: the first episode will be good, then the series that follows will be promising before turning into a steaming heap of garbage.

    • HAY

      So true…

  • kate middleton

Ryan, PLEASE STOP. You can’t even keep one show at a quality level. And now you want to have 4?

  • Anonymous

Doesn’t NBC have a pilot already in the works that was also about a gay couple?

    • Rich

Yes! It is attatched to star Sean Hayes I remember reading about it. It is supposed to be a gay version of Two and A Half Men and they are raising a 10 year old boy. So are there going to be 2 of these on NBC?

  • Josh

Whatever it is, it can replace Whitney immediately.

    • kate middleton

I don’t understand why anyone is still watching Whitney. I mean, like 2 million people watching a Whitney rerun after Up All Night last night. Seriously?

    • @ Josh

Yes. Comment of the night. Runner up is the kate one preceding it.

And yes, this makes me so sad. What the gays do not need is our own Tyler Perry. Where’s our Spike Lee? We need some writers and filmmakers who won’t just make gushy romantic comedies STAT STAT STAT

Can you imagine how sweet it would be if the next “gay show” wasn’t focused on someone’s love life but was like Breaking Bad, or The Wire (which did have some awesome gay characters), or the Sopranos? You know, queer people can do things in addition to being in relationships.

      • Sarah

YES. Thank you. I hate it that queer characters are always defined by their sexuality. It’s not a TV show, but one of my favorite characters is Val Kilmer’s “Perry” from “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” He’s a hilarious, badass, private investigator, who also happens to be gay. Why can’t we have more characters like that?

      • Krys

exactly being gay/being straight is just a way of being. Why does it have to be a punchline all the time?

  • Malcom

lol NBC. You must like being in 4th place. You keep buying garbage and you wonder why no one watches your shows. This thing is gonna flop faster than Playboy Club.

  • Rich

@continued I’m pretty sure Tyler Perry IS the gay Tyler Perry dude.

  • Seriously?

Oh I see what he’s going for here… All of his shows become so convuluted and terrible in their 2nd season, so he’s just trying to create as many one season wonders as he can… kinda pathetic.

  • George

Can’t he just solely focus on American Horror Story? It’s so good!

    • dee123

The more shows he has the less time he can have on each one and therefore he can’t stuff them up like he did Nip/Tuck.

  • Prof

He’s becoming the JJ Abrams of comedy. A one hit wonder with lots of hype. Enjoy American Horror Story while you can kidos. It’ll suck by season 2.

  • j.j

I’M OVER GLEE BUT LOVING AMERICAN HORROR STORY. THIS NEW SHOW SOUNDS A BIT TOO SIMILAR TO MODERN FAMILY BUT KNOWING RYAN MURPHY IT WILL BE MUCH DIFFERENT.

  • kelso

I wonder if they’ll name the baby Rachel? Hey maybe they can get Idina Menzel to play the surrogate… :|
