The CW signs up with Netflix

CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Television Group have signed a four-year deal with Netflix that will allow its customers to instantly watch more than 700 hours of previous seasons of scripted series that currently air on The CW, including episodes of Ringer, Hart of Dixie, The Secret Circle, The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural, Nikita, and One Tree Hill.

“This is a forward-thinking agreement … that opens a new door for The CW programming to expand its audience reach through the terrific Netflix service, and creates a brand-new window for CBS and Warner Bros. to be paid for the content we supply the network,” said Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of the CBS Corporation, in a statement.

“We have long admired the CW’s ability to connect so passionately and directly with a very important and difficult to reach demographic,” added Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix. “This is programming for the on-demand generation and we hope this agreement deepens the relationships viewers already have with these powerful entertainment brands.”

Previous seasons of The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and Nikita will be available to watch instantly on Oct. 15, with previous seasons of Supernatural and 90210 beginning in January 2012. Episodes of all scripted series airing on The CW this broadcast season will premiere for Netflix members next fall.

“This agreement is a clear example of why content creators and providers can and will grow stronger through technology partnerships tailored to the consumer,” said Bruce Rosenblum, President, Warner Bros. Television Group, in a statement. “It extends our traditional syndication windows with a strong, additive revenue play perfect for serialized dramas, and portends even greater growth opportunities for our studio as we continue to explore and define the marketplace.”

    • Wait, what about

      What about

      SMALLVILLE??????
      Dawson’s Creek?

      • Liz

I agree, it needs to include the old CW, WB, and UPN series that have ended. I also would like to know if Netflix will go all the way through season 8 with One Tree Hill, or if it will cut it off with season 6 like Soapnet and thewb.com do. Although either way, I have holding out for CW shows before getting streaming again.

Netflix needs to put more up to date movies in the instant cue. I’m all for having my favorite tv shows in the cue but sometimes I wish I had more than just ten movies made in this decade to choose from.

Excellent news, but I still would like to see some old WB shows too, like Everwood and Felicity.

    • Joy

      Felicity is available to stream.

      • Mike

As is Buffy (not mentioned but it was WB)

    • ST

I might actually take a look at Netflix if Everwood ever becomes available…

    • Liz

Agree I would love Everwood and Dawsons Creek to be available.

So, we’re assuming The CW will still be around in 4 years? LOL. Still, good news!

I am so excited about this. I have wanted to start watching Nikita because I heard it was good, but didn’t want to have to buy the DVDs for the first season. Now I can catch up.

  • Josh

I haven’t watched anything from the CW in years. Any suggestions? Let’s think Buffy, Lost quality here. Doesn’t have to be Breaking Bad, but it should be better than run of the mill garbage.

    • lexi

I suggest you watch SUPERNATURAL, Buffy actors will be there next week.

      • mick

The Vampire Diaries, the closest thing to Buffy on the cw. The pilot is horrible but get into the second half of season 1 and it will be awesome. Best paced show on tv

Too late. I canceled Netflix after their huge price increase. There are other ways to watch streaming TV online. Look at the “TV Devo” website. There is tons to watch over the internet.

  • Jose

What about Aliens in America? That show was unfairly cancelled and has yet to be available on DVD. Oh and Everybody Hates Chris.

  • lexi

Excellent, anything that can help get more people watch Supernatural( the best show on CW) I’m all for it. I already owned all the past DVDs 1-6 :)

Yay! I don’t understand why people hate on Netflix so much- they’re getting better every day. Even their ‘huge’ price increase isn’t really that bad, I don’t think. In order to get better, newer content, Netflix has to spend money- and that money needs to come from somewhere. I think, for the customers, it comes down to getting what they pay for. If they want those newer shows and movies, it comes at a price. Even at the new, higher price, I think Netflix is one heck of an amazing deal- and I’ve never used it for anything other than streaming video.
