TNT cancels Jason Lee starrer 'Memphis Beat'

TNT has opted against ordering a third season of Memphis Beat, the drama that stars Jason Lee as a quirky police detective named Dwight Hendricks.

“The network thanks everyone involved in the production of Memphis Beat for their work on the series, including the great cast and crew,” according to a TNT statement.

The cable network is doing a little housecleaning in preparation for the arrival of its Dallas reboot next year. Last month, it yanked the three-year-old HawthoRNe, the hospital drama that starred Jada Pinkett Smith. And earlier this year, the network dropped Men of a Certain Age

TNT is not hurting in the drama department, however: Rizzoli and Isles and Falling Skies are hits, and the network just ordered another season of Franklin & Bash. Another batch of episodes from The Closer, in the meantime, return Nov. 28.

    • lisa g.

Poor Alfre! Anyhow, Hawthorne was terrible n the acting was laughable! Not to mention java has the body of a 12 yr old boy.

This show wasn’t great, but it was consistently entertaining, in spite of the increasingly awkward ways of getting jason lee to sing.BTW,I wanna share a good news to you.My best friend ,she just has announced her wedding with a millionaire man who is a businessman!they met via Millionaireloving.C óM ..it is the largest and best club for rich people and their admirers to chat online. …You do not have to be rich or famous. ,but you can meet one , It’s worthy a try,Maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends!

Actually enjoyed this, except for Jason Lee’s singing, it was a solid time killer, Agreed Hawthorne was laughably bad though!

      • deeidub

@kris, I’m in total agreement, especially the singing–although I’m pretty sure I read that it was someone else, and not Jason’s own voice. Either way, I saw that as the one missable portion of every show.

      • Irishsis

Jason did not do the vocals. He stated that he couldn’t hold a note. But I agree that they could have left that part of his persona out.

    • hannah

worst show ever. this show makes the city of memphis look like a hick town with a population of 500. so glad this show is done. we see better storylines on the news than on that show.

      • Vic Nardozza

Yeah, we know that Memphis is actually a hick town with a population of 646,000.

      • Memphis LA

It was filmed in New Orleans-so if it looked tacky,it was Big Easy tacky.

      • Michael Weisser

I suppose you like that dumb ass show, Franklin & Bash. I’ve been to Memphis for two weeks and ot is not far fetched at all.

      • Howard

I have been looking to see when Memphis Beat was going to air, Really SORRY its off the air Really Good Show!!! and you leave show on that are Crazy that people hate..

    • Geminijef

What seemed at first like a formula show, became a great police procedural with interesting characters. It was much like the under appreciated The Unusuals. But of course all my favourite shows are canceled and we’re left with Jerseylicious and another season of 90210. At least the laughable HawthoRNe (don’t forget the pun with RN!) was canceled.

  • Rusty

This show wasn’t great, but it was consistently entertaining, in spite of the increasingly awkward ways of getting jason lee to sing.

    • Brett

Or getting him to lip sync.

  • alan

yayayay!! now jason lee’s talent can be put somewhere else that ISN’T a crime drama — boringggg!!

    • S.O.

he can go back to his 1st profession. Professional Skateboarding!!

    • Michael Weisser

      Another idiot.

  • Elizabeth

Oh great. Thanks TNT. This was one of the better, not so much drama type cute shows on TV that made summer tv worth watching. I will miss Jason Lee and the rest of the actors on this good show. I have no interest in watching Dallas. I never watched the other two shows, but do watch the Closer and Rizzolli and Isles. With the Closer ending this next summer, there will only be one good show on. I will watch the new series Major Crimes, but I don’t know if it will remind to much of Brenda Leigh.

    • MMJ

I agree, @Elizabeth. And, @Rusty is right, MB is consistently entertaining. That’s more than I can say for a lot of shows on TV. Maybe someone else with pick it up. I hear there are openings on ABC and NBC right now.

Booooooooooooo to TNT for cancelling this terrific show.

      • gemapet

Agree. Cannot believe this. Great atmosphere in this show – unlike any other. Next week’s season, now series, finale will be bittersweet.

    • Sue1

I agree too. Very enjoyable show. I thought this might be the case because it took so long to renew or cancel, but I’m still very disappointed. Leverage is the only TNT show left for me.

    • Carla

I agree, I really liked Memphis Beat! I have no intention of watching Major Crimes though. The Closer without Brenda Leigh? I think not.

  • peeved

i love that show – great! the keep the jerky buddy show “franklin and bash” and get rid of the fun shows that have heart! at least they are keeping rissoli – for now. other than closer, rissoli or the re-runs of bones, i now have one less reason to watch that station.

  • Brett

Only two original series on TNT worth watching now: “Franklin and Bash” and “Southland.”

    • gazmo

      CLOSER??

      Major Crimes?

      Falling Skies?

      Back under your bridge, Troll!!!

  • jack

my friend’s aunt makes $ 54 an hour on the computêr. She has been fired for 6 months but last month her check was $ 5731 just working on the computêr for a fêw hours. The sìte is CashHard.cÒm

  • alan

this was the only cop show that my wife liked to watch with me.

  • Ron

First season had a bluesy/jazzy, gritty vibe that was missing in the second year. The whole atmosphere seemed different. Still, I’m sorry to see it go.

    • rayme

I think that is exactly right. It did memphis a beat in the second season. But it was a good summer show and I shudder when I think of Dallas coming back.

  • amy

Isn’t Jason Lee the one who did Alvin and the Chipmunks?

  • Bibi

Sorry to see it go, but hated the whole “singing” thing and yes, he did lip sync.

    • Sue1

Loved the singing thing, it made the show unique, and he was the first to admit he didn’t actually sing.

    • topoopon

Agree, I usually fastforwarded the singing scenes.

  • Ace

Wow, this sucks I enjoyed watching this show. Didn’t really watch Hawthorne but loved Men of a Certain Age…strike two TNT.

  • Tom

now please film a My Name is Earl finale

    • gazmo

I thought “MY NAME IS DETECTIVE EARL”
WAS the finale to the NBC show (always wondered what happened to Randy though).

  • GooGoo

Yeah, I’m actually not so disapointed. except for the “I have an app for that” line when he used his smartphone to break a window pane, the show really lagged this year. It didn’t hold my attention.

  • Misspriss_1

I liked Memphis Beat.. Good little show, with a good cast too.. Also, it was something to watch during those lean summer months. Too bad!!
