This set-up sounds like it has comic potential: Fox’s New Girl has just cast comic actress June Diane Raphael as a friend of Zooey Deschanel’s Jess.
Raphael plays a Sadie, a “smart, slightly intimidating but helpful friend, she’s an OB/GYN doctor … who’s also a lesbian.” Sadie offers Nick (Jake Johnson) an unofficial diagnosis to a “health problem.” Raphael is a guest star in the ninth episode, with the potential to become a recurring performer.
Raphael has appeared on Adult Swim’s NTSF:SD:SUV, Funny or Die and Starz’ Party Down. As everybody knows at this point, New Girl is off Fox’s grid until Nov. 1.

PLUS – Zooey Deschanel has tree stump legs – Exam Room stirrups are just the WRONG accessory for her calves.
I really like her “tree stump legs”. They look like real human legs instead of Hollywood robot legs.

exactly. quirky weird shows are hard to make both realistic (to their respective worlds) and funny. New Girl gets lost in no mans land. I don’t believe the characters on any level, don’t believe their chemistry in the relationships and don’t find them funny on any level either. Raising Hope, My Name is Earl, Arrested Development, Scrubs… These shows had quirky over the top characters that made sense in the world they were in. The tonal quality of New Girl is all wrong. Was it completely unfixable? No. I could give a few suggestions but i was never asked to be in a focus group.
I totally agree. I love quirky comedies and Zooey D, but this show is terrible. Every week I watch it I have trouble getting to the end of the episode. Zooey’s character annoys me, she would be better if she’d stick up for herself more and had more spunk or something. I’m giving it one more episode to improve before I quit.
New Girl is one of the best & funniest shows in years. Zooey is unique, hillarious ant yet very genuine. The entire cast is strong, the writing is innovative and the directing right on target. I will be saving every episode on my DVR indefinitely for multiple repeat viewings. Thank you for putting this show on television.

I’m teetering on the brink of deleting this show from my record list. The only character I really care about is Nick and while the black guy had potential, I’m afraid to get attached lest he be recast again. Schmidt is just a sad cartoon. And then we come to Zooey…I just feel like the character is trying too hard to be quirky – seriously? hillbilly teeth at a wedding? of someone you don’t know?

They recast him because Damon Wayans Jr. did the pilot as backup in case his show, Happy Endings, didn’t get picked up. Actors do this all the time and shows have to re-cast around it. Usually though, they re-shoot the pilot with the new actor. This was an unusual case and the odds are they wont recast him again.

I dearly hope that this post is a parody, and it’s a sad sign of the times that I can’t be certain of it.
Isn’t that a bit…stereotypical? The lesbian becomes a gynecologist so she can look at vaginas all day? I don’t know, it feels almost offensive to me, although I may be looking too far into it.

Yeah, I find it a little offensive too, but that’s mostly because I can already hear every single lame already overdone joke that’s gonna come out of the characters mouths about it.

I don’t get what’s the big deal with a gynecologist being also a lesbian. How many gynecologists are heterosexual men? Is that funny too? errr.. Professionals being professional on the job regardless of sexual orientation is considered funny? And if they are unprofessional, that would probably mean malpractice no? so.. what’s funny? I think the ‘New Girl’ writers have fallen off the deep end of what is comedy.

This is what I’ve been saying all along. Stop trying so hard to write the characters as quirky and just let them BE quirky.

Quite possibly the worst show of all time. If you watch and enjoy this show you should be be under psychiatric care.
