Sons of Anarchy, FX’s highest-rated series ever, has been picked up for a fifth season.
The drama about an outlaw biker club is the No. 1 scripted drama series in all of basic cable. Season four which concludes on Nov. 29 is averaging 5.8 million viewers and 3.9 viewers ages 18-49. When taking into account multiple viewings, the show actually averages 9 million total viewers and 6 million adults 18-49.
“Everyone at FX is very grateful to Kurt Sutter, his many writing, directing and producing collaborators and his masterful cast for making such a compelling and beautifully crafted show,” says FX President Jon Landgraf in a statement. “It is no small challenge to bring the themes of a great, ancient play like Hamlet into a wholly original television setting and to tell this complex story in a way that is both riveting and accessible to a broad audience.”
The drama stars Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, and Charlie Hunnam. Seven episodes remain this season. The drama airs Tuesdays at 10 on FX.

Personally, I think the show has gotten pretty weak. I will continue to watch but its not a “must” watch show anymore for me. Season 1 & 2 were by far the best, last season was very dragged on and this season seems to be as well. I can’t stand this DEA agent, he is like watching paint dry.
Sorry Joe, but you’re WAY off base. The show is better than ever.
Indeed! last season blew my head off!
I agree, Joe. This season is even more boring than last season, and like you, the show used to be a ‘must’ for me.
Oh come on, it is still the most exciting series in many years and each episode is more exciting than the last.
you have lost your mojo
This is great news!!! Love this show!!
@Joe – I disagree about this season. I think the tension that is building every week is what is making this one of their best seasons.
@Jimmy…Ditto!
The 5th season should be its last. How long can they drag on the story that Jax wants to leave the club?
This show jumped the shark a few seasons ago. I continue to watch but I seem to question why after each episode. Last season was insanely convoluted and silly. This season so far is just boring. I also feel like they have to try so hard to make everyone so bad ass and it just doesn’t come off. Also, the whole asking us to have sympathy for these guys one minute and cheer them on stabbing a bunch of dudes in cold blood the next doesn’t wash. It’s one thing to explore moral ambiguity and the whole anti-hero concept, but this show can’t manage that task the way NYPD Blue, The Shield, Rescue Me, Breakig Bad, Dexter, or The Sopranos did. Even Justified is doing a better job of that than SOA. More people need to start watching that instead.
Agree completely. Sons is definately a good show, but it’s missing something that keeps it from becoming as good as the shows you mentioned. I’d add Deadwood to the list you had, which is one of Sutter’s favorite shows and main influences.
Hater. I loved the sopranos and it doesn’t even come close to this show. Whatever your smoking its some good stuff dude.
I think it all depends how Clay’s little obsession with getting rid of Tara plays out.
I disagree with Joe. This season is by far the best. There’s soo mcuh tension..Like are the drug people really going to kill Tara?
if it’s really based off Hamlet, that would make Tara Ophelia and makes me think she might die.
America loves crap.
Danny Trejo is terrible in this, stiff like a plank, dialogue is clunky, but it’s funny to watch the absurdity, hello racism storyline pulled out of thin air !
You seen anyone but latins in the mayans in this show? You seen anyone but black guys in the grim bastards in t?
Great show and a great season so far.
For the person that asked: Kurt Sutter has the show outlined for 7 seasons. That’s his goal.
It’s dull, it invariably drags, the characters are impossibly flat, and this is first-rate lightweight storytelling. Referencing Hamlet is absurd, embarrassing. Show blows, yo.
Drecks a Hater. Why post a comment if its a crappy one. Why read the article if you hate SOA and it invariably drags?? HAHAHA
In the long scheme of it, it is clearly Hamlet…so my guess would be Tara will die, Clay will accidentally kill Gemma while trying to kill Jax, and Jax will ultimately kill Clay…all this may not happen until season 7, and Clay is a turd who needs to die, but it is fun watching him sink further and further in his own schemes. I am wondering if Wayne Unser willl make it rhough the season alive.
Its loosely based on hamlet. It would be boring if every character died the same way they do in the play. Don’t think it will play out like that.
Clay’s attempt to kill Tara will fail; Jax will send her and the boys into hiding. This, and the discovery of Clay’s role in J.T.’S death, will force Jax to try and kill Clay as he leaves the club to join Tara. He’ll use Piney to do it, but that’ll result in Piney’s death at the hands of another member protecting Clay (probably Tig, maybe Bobby Elvis). Clay will track Jax down and kill him, but Gemma will kill Clay for it. Opie takes over the MC.
While I feel season 3 was a down year, the show has more than picked it up this season. And a word of advice for those who don’t like SOA: DON’T WATCH IT. I can’t stand Two And A Half Men so guess what, I don’t watch it.
i love the show. hope there are many more to come and like vic said if you dont like it dont watch it. it shows people some what the life of a biker and what they go through. yall are doing a great job keep it up.
Sutter knows that the Jax-Tara relationship is very popular with the fans. I think he must know it’s not such a good idea to kill Tara off. I would be pissed by that myself. Plus Sutter is too slick to do everything by the Hamlet book. I think Tara is safe.
Gemma too for that matter. Clay might go sooner than you think. He has to get ready to start making Hellboy 3.
