Despite little promotion, The X Factor snagged a surprise berth on Sunday and ended up clobbering the entertainment competition, which routinely takes a hit from football on NBC.
Naturally, the Peacock dominated on Sunday because of the gridiron action; the Vikings versus the Bears earned a 5.7 rating/13 share among adults 18-49, according to early results. But The X Factor was the night’s most popular entertainment program in the demo, earning a 3.3/8 and 8.6 million viewers. That’s down 11% from Thursday’s competition but hey, you didn’t know it was on. It wasn’t confirmed to air until after Saturday’s ALCS playoffs game was over.
Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million viewers.
The ABC shows continue to lose favor with viewers: Though America’s Funniest Home Videos was up 7% to a 1.5/4 and 6.4 million, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was down 5% to a 1.9/5 and 7.1 million, Desperate Housewives was down 4% — and tied its series low — with a 2.7/6 and 8.2 million, and Pan Am posted its lowest-rated telecast to date with a 1.8/4 and 5.8 million. Death watch, anyone? Any new show that starts to earn below a 2 rating may end up swimming with the fishes. Stay tuned there.
On CBS 60 Minutes earned a 1.9/5 and 10.9 million, followed by The Amazing Race (2.5/6, 9.2 million) and The Good Wife (2.1/5, 10 million). Good news for David Caruso, though: CSI: Miami was up 9% to a 2.4/6 and 10.5 million.
Bottom line: NBC won the night in the demo with a 4.8/12, followed by Fox (4.4/11), CBS (2.2/5) and ABC (2.0/5). In viewers, NBC was first with 12.3 million, followed by Fox (11.6 million), CBS (10.6 million), and ABC (6.9 million).

FOOTBALL!!! So proud of my BEARS!!!!
Agree!!! Finally won on national TV this year….even if it was against the Vikings.
It seems EVERYTHING is on either Thursday or Sunday nights. Some struggling shows should be moved to other nights.
I agree. Maybe a move to a weeknight could help the stragglers.
I watch Dexter and Homeland. Nothing on Sunday night network TV interests me any longer. I tried Pan Am once and screamed Mayday Mayday! DH lost its footing a couple of years ago. I never was a fan of Good Wife (I originally tuned in for Chris Noth) because JM is a downer – she never smiles or enjoys anything! Cable is just killing network TV yet networks refuse to acknowledge the reality that they program terrible shows and let some stay on the air way too long.
ITA. Not even my love of Alan Cumming and Matt Czuchry can overcome my dislike for JM.
You should check out Good Wife this season, JM has loosened up some because her character has loosened up some.
I agree with Trubble!
Between Dexter, Homeland, and Boardwalk Empire, why would I waste time on the Good Wife. I never like JM in ER, I would not like her in the Good Wife.
Are we surprised the fall of Pan Am? The show, just like the company itself, is going down the toilet fast!
Don’t forget The walking dead! Yeah, cable smashes this garbage the networks give us on Sundays.
Yup 4.8 ratings and almost 8million ppl watching!
Dexter, Homeland and The Walking Dead on Sundays is heaven! Network TV can’t compete!
I watched Boardwalk Empire, then watched a nature doc on DVD. I DVR’d Pan Am.
Too bad about Pan Am, a bit of harmless fun.
I have Pan Am waiting for me on the DVR. I’m disappointed about it’s sinking numbers-I really enjoy it, but sadly I doubt it’ll stick around too much longer.
I have Pan Am on my DVR too. But after watching the pilot, I haven’t been able to get too excited about watching the rest of the episodes. There are so many other shows that I want to watch first (Hello Revenge!)
Pan Am will be flying off into the sunset soon.
While I’m also disappointed in Pan Am’s falling ratings, I’m really not surprised. While I loved the pilot episode–which I thought had great potential–the subsequent episodes have been disappointing, in my opinion. The dialogue and plotlines are poorly written, and the acting is subpar (with the exception of Christina Ricci). While far better than the dreadful Playboy Club, I’m almost certain Pan Am will share the same fate in the near future.
I too enjoy Pan Am, I watch it online the next day and am really going to miss it when it gets cancelled. A decent and fun tv show
So happy to hear of ABC’s primetime misfortunes. ABC has become the network of cheap crap (The Chew) to the sacrifice of iconic soap All My Children. ABC can foster great shows like Modern Family but then turn around and force us to watch the dimwitted return of Charlie’s Angels? Pan Am is a show about a company that’s out of business. How this got greenlit I’ll never know. Madmen in the sky I guess was the pitch. In the mindset of Occupy Wall Street, how about Occupying ABC?
I enjoy the Food Network in spurts, but that “Chew” show looks like crap. Do you know if its ratings are meeting ABC’s expectations?
Hi Kim,
I don’t know specifics but I’m pretty sure they aren’t what ABC hoped for BUT The chew is immensely cheaper to produce so in the end, ABC probably loves what the show is doing (they just won’t talk about it’s dismal reviews or the nickname that everyone is using for it…THE SPEW).
Pan Am is waiting on my DVR, too. I am disappointed to hear about it’s poor performance. This show keeps getting better and better – if they cancel it, I hope they at least let us see the remaining episodes. But maybe it will bounce back?
It really was better this week than last. I didn’t see the first. But it still needs work. ABC should give it a chance because, well, they don’t have much else.
Pan Am – snooooozefest. I can’t watch it anymore. Every time I do I think about 5 other things I could be watching instead….bye bye (good music though)
and Ricci’s hot as hell!
Karine Vanasse (Collettte) is even hotter! Margot Robbie (Laura) can also hold her own against Christina.
Completely agree. I really tried to like the show but it just didn’t do anything for me. Took it off my DVR list after last night’s episode.
I know its ricky, and the Fall line up was announced back in May, but as one blogger/reader pointed out last week, why not switch up Pan Am with Revenge? It makes the most sense. On the East Coast CBS NEVER airs The Good Wife and CSI Miami on time due to football…and I just dont see why a good show like pan Am (good, not great, but good by network standards) should get axed because its going up against an American past time like the giants of the gridiron. I’m NOT a sports fan, but its just sad that execs at ABC don’t see the big picture, and I guess in their minds would rather axe a show, than do some maneuvering (ya know, actual work) and see if it pays off…*sigh* Also kinda ironic, Charlie’s Angels was set in Cuba this week, and now so was this week’s Pan Am…
Pan Am was in was Burma. Didn’t you notice everybody looked Asian
) But you have valid points about the scheduling.
I doubt ABC is willing to risk Revenges good numbers by moving it to sundays to try and save a slowly declining show like Pan Am. It is rare for ABC to be able to launch an hour long show so now that Revenge is at least a semi-success they are not tampering with Revenge.
I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying.
Pan Am is on at 10. Football is always over by 8-ish at the latest.
Where do you live? Because every Sunday since Pan Am debuted football hasnt been over til well after 9pm here in Philadelphia. And along with season ending shows on cable (Breaking Bad, Against The Wall, and now returning shows Hung, & Walking Dead) Pan Am is shown when CBS is running The Good Wife after the football games go late, what don’t you get?? Pan AM is up against competition its not even supposed to be scheduled against ! CBS SHOULD be airing CSI Miami, which is supposed to appeal to men, not the Good Wife which is supposed to air at 9, and is female driven.
And to further clarify, if CBS is running the Good Wife into the 10pm hour here in philly, its doing so also in major markets like NYC and all along the Eastern seaboard, so I have to assume that your comment means you live on the West Coast.
Totally agree I think, a little back and forth with the comments. but that said, i stopped watching the Good Wife because of CBS running it late into the 10:00 slot and as far as Pan Am, i do think they were trying to be MadMen, but they PG’ed it up. No smoking, no swearing, no stewardesses being wild.didn’t watch last night but watched the one from last week that i had dvr’ed and was so bored by the mediocrity. and it was just soooooo predictable!
tricky, not ricky, haha
I’m nervous for the Sunday slot on ABC b/c I want Once Upon a Time to do well but if the other shows are stinkin’ it up….
Saw the Once Upon a Time pilot at NY Comic-Con and it wasn’t great, so it may not reverse ABC’s Sunday ratings slide.
Should CBS move “The Good Wife” again? Monday or Tuesday or Thursday at 10pm? I bet (teamed up with CSI: Miami) either The Mentalist or Hawaii 5-0 would do better.
just move pan am to a different night, ABC!
I’m almost certain at this point ABC could move Pan Am to Friday nights and it do better at 9pm. They re reun shows at 8pm on Friday, anyways, but I believe NBC debuts GRIMM this Friday too.
For real. The reason Pan Am is doing this badly is because it’s on at 10 PM on a night people don’t watch 10 PM shows, after a dying soap people are surprised is still on. I’m not saying it would be a breakaway hit if it was on a different night, but it wouldn’t be a disaster.
It should definitely be on Monday or Tuesday night, no network show will be able to compete against HBO, AMC and Showtime, just not gonna happen.
But the thing is, Pan Am did get good ratings so people did watch. But unfortunately they are loosing viewers every week. I like the show, but unless it can pick up steam in the slot it has I doubt it will last. Hopefully it will get to finish the season at least but doesn`t look good.
When football games shown on Sunday nights are played out in the Midwest or West, those games run WAY late on the East Coast. I know this is an entertainment site, but I don’t see how you people don’t get that when that happens CBS’ entire Sunday night line up shows later, when Pan Am airs, which means it has to compete with all the cable shows that are on at 10, and now the Good Wife too, and last night the return of The Walking Dead.
‘Loosing?’ LOL
Even better suggestion, go ahead and cancel it and we won’t have to have this conversation because the show sucks
