With Pretty Little Liars on midseason hiatus until its second half premieres in January, fans are looking for something — anything — to whet their appetites. According to Sasha Pieterse, who plays Alison on the ABC Family show, tonight’s Halloween prequel episode will not disappoint. “You’re going to be blown away,” Pieterse promised in an interview with EW. So what else did she spill about the Liars?
The episode, which takes place a year before Alison went missing from Rosewood, is called “The First Secret,” said Pieterse. “There are a lot of first secrets in this episode,” she teased. “It’s a time warp — all the way back to the beginning of the girls’ friendship and the beginning of her first encounters with her enemies.” Pieterse revealed that the standalone ep will lay the groundwork for “a big revelation… that the girls will soon find out.” Unlike other episodes, which have only shown Alison from the Liars‘ point-of-view, this episode is entirely from the queen bee’s perspective. “You’re definitely going to be seeing a different side of Alison,” she added. “There’s a lot that’s untold about her… [including] what she did when no one was looking.”
As for the show’s constant barrage of cliffhangers, Pieterse assured, “You’ll get some answers.” She noted, “It’s kind of crazy because Alison knew everyone’s secrets, but no one knew hers.” With the prequel, “you get to see some of her secrets, and it ties everything together.” Of course, that’s not to say that these answers don’t also come with more questions: “There are more suspects that arise as well that you wouldn’t be so sure of if you didn’t see the Halloween episode.”
In January, the effects from the episode, will be felt, she added. “The viewers know all these things that have happened, but the girls don’t, and it’s interesting to see how it all ties together,” Pieterse teased. The repercussions will keep the story moving through the spring because “There’s a lot that the girls don’t know.” And it seems they’re not alone. “The [producers] keep us guessing as well,” Pieterse laughed. “I’ve definitely gained some more theories in the last few episodes, so you guys have a lot to look forward to!”
