'The Secret Circle' scoop: Adam's father, Ethan, is about to get interesting!

The next two episodes of The Secret Circle are going to be big for Ethan (Adam Harrington), Adam’s father. SPOILER ALERT if you’re an episode behind: “Obviously last week’s episode was shocking, and Nick’s death/murder, depending on how you look at it, really hits Ethan hard,” Harrington says. “What we start to see is that a lot of his drinking has been him just not wanting to deal with the past. It takes him right back to those events 16 years ago, which of course makes Ethan hit the bottle even harder, and he ends up saying something to Diana that he shouldn’t have said. It seriously has an effect on her relationship with Adam from now on.”

In addition to Nick’s death, Harrington says the return to town of Nick’s older brother Jake (guest star Chris Zylka) also stirs things up. “The new character changes the dynamic in the group and has a real big effect on how Adam and Cassie interact. We can’t forget that Ethan knows what happened 16 years ago, he was there, he saw it all go down. His idea — don’t mess with fate because bad things will happen — well, Adam and Cassie are supposed to be together. He believes that, and if that doesn’t happen, it’s messing with fate. So Ethan’s starting to get really worried about the safety of his son and these kids.”

In the Oct. 27 episode, Ethan has even more to fret about. “We see someone, a mysterious character, coming back from Ethan’s past and threaten to say stuff to Cassie that he shouldn’t. So all this stuff kind of builds, and we see Ethan at the end of that episode make a choice as to whether he’s gonna continue ignoring everything or get involved. And what’s really cool is how he actually gets involved,” Harrington says. “When I read it, I was so excited … If he does start making decisions, what does his future look like? I always think that if somebody drinks that much, they’re holding A LOT back. Lord help the people who are on the bad side of that.”

Now that the show’s writers have gotten a full-season order, Harrington looks forward to them digging more into Ethan’s relationship with Charles (Gale Harold), who, you’ll remember, threatened to drown him in the series premiere if he doesn’t keep his lips sealed about the past. “I looked at Nick’s death, and I thought, okay, no holds barred. There’s some high stakes here. Then it made me think that Charles didn’t kill Ethan in the first episode, but he threatened him pretty severely. I thought, how afraid of someone are you that you have to be so aggressive about warning them? I think maybe Charles is a little afraid of Ethan and what Ethan’s capable of, and it’s probably in Charles’ best interest that Ethan stay the town drunk but just keep his mouth shut.”

Don’t expect that situation to come to a head in the next two episodes though. “To be honest, I’m kinda happy about that. Because by the time those two face off again, it’s gonna be substantial,” Harrington laughs. “I think the writers are great, we just keep everything simmering and simmering and simmering until you think, what’s gonna happen when this thing comes to a boil?”

I have this theory that Ethan might very well have been the one of that circle who revealed his circle’s plans to the parent’s group and as a result, he might not have had his magic stripped like the rest of that group. But his guilt over ratting out his friends and ultimately driving Amelia away from town has driven him to drink and that has hidden his magic. Honestly, if her grandmother doesn’t have similar magic stripping plans for Cassie’s group (which probably doesn’t since the circle is broken), I would say Cassie probably is more Ethan’s role in her circle, the conscience (and I am guessing Diana is Amelia’s role, the good witch).

I’m still sad about Nick!!! I understand that the writters are allowed to take liberties with the book. Yet getting rid of Nick completely changes the story even more.. Now am just trowing ideas since the writters r doing the same! Cassie & Adam r brother & sister!!!

I think we’ll find out Diana is an a-hole, just like her dad.

I totally agree I never really liked Diana, I always thought there was something weird about her.

I didn’t seriously believe Nick was actually gone…too soon to break the circle?

I know me either..I really wish it was his gf (Melissa, i think?) that went and not him.

So is the point of breaking the circle so that they each have individual magic again? Remember, the five had powers before Cassie arrived. So now they do again–just like Faye wanted. And actually, it’s more interesting if they can defend themselves individually–I don’t like all these recent scenes of them running in fear!

Every interview since Nick’s death makes it seems like this show is about to take lift off, which is exciting! I seriously feel that Episode 5 was the turning point for Season 1 of The Secret Circle and I can’t wait to see where it’s headed!

I hope EW sticks with reviewing this show, because I look forward to reading their takes on each episode. They didn’t do it for “Slither” though and I felt disappointed.

Can’t wait to see what’s ahead for Charles – love to see him confronting other adults. Gale Harold is awesome!

Something in the article struck me as odd–Nick’s older brother is coming into town? Soooooo….. does that mean he can use magic too? Will Diana try and force him into the circle and bind them together again? Or will Nick’s death have the other members re-evaluating the merits of defending themselves individually? And how old were their parents when the fire happened? I always had the impression they were still pretty young but they all had kids by then! Weird!

This. I feel like the writers haven’t properly thought out the timeline for this show and its characters. I also think its weird that all the previous Circle members (who were all high school juniors or seniors at that point) got pregnant around the same time…you would think that would have attracted attention as well.

Don’t get me wrong…I’m enjoying the show (especially Phoebe Tonkin’s performance) but there are quite a few considerable plot holes that need to be addressed. I guess I’ve been spoiled by The Vampire Diaries since the story breaking and writing is always on point.

      • Hope

That ‘plothole’ is actually addressed in the books, so there is a reason why the parents had their kids so young and around the same time. The reason’s pretty creepy, but… yes, there is a reason.

Which is something I’m sure the show will address in a matter of time now that things are beginning to progress further into the story and what happened 16 years ago. Besides, if we had all the answers too soon, what would keep us interested? So, like the books, I’m sure the series will fill in that hole.

In the mean time, catch the show tonight at 9 on the CW after The Vampire Diaries! :)

Again I must ask: Where are The Secret Circle recaps?!?!? Is EW not doing them anymore?

There seems to be some kind of incestuous nature to “fate”

Adam’s father and Cassie’s mother were meant to be, and so are Adam and Cassie. It’s “written in the stars” or whatever. If Ethan and Amelia got together though, Adam and Cassie would either not exist or be be brother/sister…right?
