Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: South Pacific.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Let’s dive into this strength versus loyalty debate that raged at Tribal Council. Fun Fact! Not counting any season in which there were pre-merge tribe swaps or consolidations — because that muddles the picture in terms of where loyalties are — there have actually been only five Survivor seasons (Thailand, Palau, Tocantins, Samoa, Redemption Island) in which one tribe has gone into the merge with more members than the other. And in two of those five instances, the winner actually came from the tribe with the numbers disadvantage. So, I’ll ask you: What is more important, numbers or unity?
JEFF PROBST: Wow. Amazing fact. Great question. Seeing as how I have never played the game this is clearly an armchair opinion. I’d say that in an ideal situation, you want the #’s at the merge until you get the advantage and can knock them off. But you want the other side to have the majority of the members on the jury because you are ultimately going to have to betray your own alliance to get to the end and if you do that they typically won’t give you the vote at the end. Depending on when you merge that can get tricky as the jury doesn’t always start with the first person voted out. The number of players at the start of the game also impacts the numbers. Having 20 really complicates things. 16 is a much more manageable number, but we don’t do 16 anymore.
Even with that whole strength versus loyalty debate, I couldn’t help but feel that the entire thing was a bit of a ruse on Coach and Albert’s part, with the real point of contention being Coach wanting to bring someone he could control in Edna that would give him an edge down the line versus Albert wanting to instead bring someone in Mikayla that might show a little more loyalty to him and Sophie. How much of that do you feel was factoring in?
I think you’re right and I think Coach won that battle. He has a side deal with Edna that will garner him more favor than it will Albert or Sophie. Strategically, Coach is a few steps ahead of Albert but I’m not sure about Sophie. It’s not clear how much she is laying back vs. just letting Coach take the heat. Coach is playing the best game he’s ever played.
What’s a worse move: Ozzy informing everyone he has the idol and declaring himself a free agent, or Brandon inviting his tribe to vote him out?
It’s a bigger blunder for Ozzy because Ozzy could actually win the game and moves like that really hurt him. Brandon can never win and blowing up like he has been at Tribal Council makes him more likely to go to the end. It’s amazing that coming into the game you would expect Ozzy to be the favorite, but the more I talk to people on the street it’s clear — Coach has surprised everybody and Ozzy is playing an even worse social game than he did last time.

I couldn’t agree with Jeff more – Brandon can never win this game! When he told people to vote him off, they all should have said okay, ba bye now!
Awwwwh I wanted to be first! but I agree – Brandon can’t win – they’ll just bring him to the end because he’s a loser who can’t get any votes!
My Random Thoughts:
When Coach and Tree-Mail Visor Edna went looking for coconuts on the beach, they seemed to spend more time dodging crabs and complimenting each other. Coach told Edna that she is safe…for now…and that Mikayla would be the next one voted out. If you’re Edna, are you pleased about this? It’s not like he told her he was tight with her, just that she could last 3 days longer than Mikayla.
Maybe she was too preoccupied with the bites/sores on her legs (did you SEE that?) to consider that this was a pretty crappy deal. Either that or she was hypnotized by the smoke coming off of whatever Coach was burning on a stick over the fire.
There were a lot of underlying messages at Tribal Council: Coach said that they lost because they didn’t compete as a team. (Translation: Mikayla sucked.) Jeff asked Edna why she always sits out at challenges? (Translation: Can you do anything?)
There was a big discussion of Loyalty vs. Strength. Albert says screw loyalty, you have to get to the merge with numbers. (Translation: Why save Justin Verlander for Game 1 of the ALCS when you haven’t yet won the ALDS vs. the Yankees?)
Brandon said “I love you Mikayla” (Translation: You’ll need a restraining order for the Live Finale), but begged his Tribemates to vote for her.
Coach said that it is possible to be too honest, and that some cards can be revealed at a certain time, and that doesn’t mean you’re being disloyal. (Translation: Brandon, don’t be p1ssed at me when you find out I had the Idol.)

That imposter made it not possible for you to be first Puppy Dope. Having said that. Brandon getting to the end. The final three is what all Hantz fans want to see. Win or lose. As long as he’s in the rest of the season. So Probst is right about the second part of what he said. Probst could be wrong about Brandon winning the season but ultimately all that matters is that he stays in as long as possible and somebody like that Jim the Jerk Rice goes out sooner rather than later.
@Saline: I’m a Russell Hantz fan, but Brandon’s a boob! It’s like he has all the bluster and bad game of his uncle and none of the smarts, strategy, or cunning.

Brandon can’t win – without a doubt, but it will be funny to see him get dragged to the end, since nobody will vote for him – especially after the merge and they all find out he’s a Hantz – he’ll be everybody’s pick for final 2 or 3. He’ll think it was his “strategy” that got him to the end, but he’ll be wrong, just like his uncle was wrong.
Brandon can win without a doubt. It’s very possible. It will be great TV to see him earn his way to the end since many would vote for him. Especially after the merge and they all learn that he’s a Hantz they’ll be treating him like he’s related to Elvis. And when he gets to the on his own steam and finishes the game in the finals. Win or lose he’ll know that it was him and only him that got him to the end. Not anybody else. That’s what I meant to type and under a different name. Not copying and impersonating a poster that’s far greater then I am. I am truly sorry for doing that Tommy D.
Russell ended up being a douchebag but in his first season, I actually think he did deserve the win and played hard vs. his whiny nephew who is having some metaphysical good vs. evil battle within himself that nobody cares about. He’s a great choice to take to the end because he’s cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs and will keep it all pretty interesting.
Beware of trollers
If you are a Hantz fan then you are a Hantz fan of both Russell and Brandon. Not just one you idiot! It’s both or none. You’re either a Hantz supporter and fan all the way with both Hantzes or you are a Hantz enemy all the way. There is no middle ground. There are no faults with either guy. Russell or Brandon. To be a Hantz fan. A true fan starts by not seeing faults at all in them. In the game and in other players. Yes! But not them! So get together tracy and wake up! Because thinking like that doesn’t make you a Hantz fan at all.
The real Saline didn’t post that first post above. I did. The Phony Saline. Who got first dibs this week. Do you want to know how I beat Sean? Because I am Sean. And the fake Puppy Dog as well. I am the imposter going around pretending to be other posters because I am as pathetic as a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. Regardless of Probst’s comments and what he really believes is possible in this season or not, I know that Brandon Hantz stands as much of a chance of winning as everybody else. And I know that the real Saline feels that way the same. I’m glad that he wasn’t voted out last night and that tease Mikayla was instead. And I’m sorry to the Great Saline and to all that view this post for being what I am. An Imposter!

Brandon deserves credit for speaking his mind, at least strategically, unlike his uncle who spoke jibberish foolishly. I think he can win this edition, he is consistent in his thoughts and in the challenges.
GoddessLu is no goddess to me but more like the antichrist. First of all stupid, Russell deserved to win all three times that he played. The only time season where somebody just as good as Russell won was last season with Boston Rob. And Brandon isn’t whiny. It’s the Hantz haters like yourself that are a bunch of whiners. Whatever is going on with those Padre victim and padres above I would like to address a Hantz hating comment made in one of the posts in that ridiculousness. Brandon isn’t a nutcase. He’s a sane individual that makes sensable decisions. And he doesn’t use religion to further his cause or anything like that. It’s all authentic when he praises the lord. So I don’t know about the pope, because that guy is an idiot, but his family, the Hantzes I’m sure are proud of his representation of a normal human being on CBS television. As to the the poster HatAttack which he should have titled DumbAttack. The tattoo he has on his neck is no different then the Dragon tattoos on Coach or all the tattoos on most of all the girls today’s lower back. It’s a tattoo! Nothing more! It is so obvious that Tommy D is either Russell himself, a personal friend of the Hantz’s or some other relative. I’m guessing he’s Russell with too time on his hands. Tommy has an unusually large number of posts and they are always only in defense of Hantz’s. Fans of Survivor come here to share their opinions with others. They often disagree, but they rarely react so rabidly, attacking all posters in defense of one Survivor. If it were possible to poll all posters, I would imagine that quite a few of us would agree that Brandon is a volatile and slightly disturbed young man. Everyone has the right to his or her opinion and Tommy D should be able to disagree without attacking. I’m sure other Survivors in the past have had a friend or relative posting here, but no one has been so obvious and given himself away like you Tommy D.
Brandon must be in AA. He’s following the 12 step program. His speech at Tribal about just one more drink, just one more pot etc., was more about himself than anything else. When he apologized to everyone that he wronged, I knew immediately he was following the AA mandate.
The here & there poster doesn’t know if he’s coming or going so how on earth can he know whether or not he or somebody else is here or there. I’m impossible. Brandon isn’t a part of no AA meeting. You are Anonymous man. That’s why you’re typing your post at eight in the morning because when night comes you’ll be attending your meeting in that stupid town that you live in. Tribal Council is always bananas when Brandon is there. He displayed the kind of black adn white thinking that is what makes people dislike the religious right though. There is no gray area? I am not Russell nor do I live in Texas and my last name doesn’t start with the letter H. The large number of posts I have is to defend the Hantzes from the large number of Hantz hating posts from jerks like you. And there’s only one thing that everybody should agree on this post about. That the Hantzes are good for TV and good for reality television. I can’t help but think all of Brandon’s speeches and “Holier than thou” thoughts are all part of an act to try to reform the Hantz name. If left to his own devices and that were not a factor, he would be backstabbing left and right. I do think Loyalty is important, but also found myself thinking that I would miss neither Edna nor Mikayla. Seems like neither contributed anything in challenges and Miklayla contributed nothing around camp but a sullen attitude. For next week, I see Ozzy going home. His tribe is smart enough to get rid of the biggest threat in the game when they have a chance. Hoping for a big blindside and his ego finally being shipped out!
Only Brandon knows if what he’s doing is an act or not. Nobody watching the show could possibly know that one hundred percent. But what is a fact and known by sensible people like myself one hundred percent is that he is good entertainment and there’s no wrong he can do on this show. Playing the game with backstabbing or playing the game with Christian thinking it doesn’t much matter to me, Tommy D. As long as he makes it to the end.
It’s like I posted on the other Survivor recap. Sean, you mixed up the words when talking about the Reunion show in December. It’s Brandon that will need to file a restraining order against Mikayla. Because she’s a home wrecker that’s in love with a married man.
Brandon must be new to religion most people who are recently introduced play the game and talk alot about there god.

I want anyobody but Coach, Ozzie, Brandon (idk why buth e just annoys me…..but less than his uncle), and that college student (whose names escapes me at the moment) that blends in with the woodwork and is really knowledgeable about the game but somehow is a terrible player at it. My pick to win would be either Keith or Jim.
I’m completely opposite with you here. Those are the four that I WANT to win. Coach, Ozzy, Brandon, or Cochran. I’m hoping one of them takes it. I like Brandon and hate how he’s getting hated on; he’s just conflicted between trying to do good and trying to actually play the game like his uncle did. That’s not being crazy; that’s BEING CONFLICTED. I like Cochran because he’s so DIFFERENT and funny; he reminds me of Fabio, whom I also loved and laughed at and wanted to win. I really don’t want Jim or Keith winning; just too common for the strong and strategic players to always try to win, and it gets boring. So, here’s hoping that Brandon makes this season a success with redemption for the Hantz name…or Cochran stuns the entire world by winning his favorite game…or Coach or Ozzy pull a Rob and win one on their third try.
Saying that you want a slimeball weasel like Jim the Jerk Rice to win shows your lack of judgement in character vin. Keith okay! But not Jim the Jerk Rice. And you’re top 3 to want to win should be Brandon, Coach, or Ozzy! But don’t put Jim the Jerk Rice in the mix with them.
And listen to the poster Josh people. His post makes a lot of sense. Those four are the top four of this season. You’re a smart thinker Josh and you know what you’re talking about.
I’m just sick of people who ride coat tails winning the million. I want someone who is strategic and good at challenges to win it this year. Ozzy fits the bill as does Coach but they have had too many chances to win so therefore I can easily predict that one or both will be blindsided since they are terrible at the strategy aspect.
People who are at the chruch this little brat is at better watch their backs. There’s a theif in the house of God.
I actually completely disagree that Brandon can’t win. If they formed a jury today – sure, maybe not. But if he makes it to the final 3 and he’s been HONEST with everyone; even the people he has eliminated; I think they will appreciate him not BS’ing them. I think he actually has time between now and then to earn some respect. I think he’s given too little credit.
You’re right about Josh making good sense saline. But this Eric guy is aswell. It’s good to see the truth be said for once rather then bitter evil Hantz hating.
He hasn’t been honest, he’s been crazy! There is a big difference. Besides, Brandon could probably play the best game ever and his last name would prevent him from earning most of the votes. Brandon has been the most honest player to ever play Survivor. You should try it some time in your everyday life Kaye. You might like it! Perhaps not! Since you are the one that is crazy. And Brandon’s alliance will be raised to higher heights because of Brandon’s contributions of being an honest player. And those that jump ship against Brandon will get Hantzed!
It happened again. The same person winning yet again. The challanger still hasn’t beat the champion on Redemption Island. And with the producers pulling the strings it’s no surprise. Nobody buys that the duels are already set up and waiting for the two people that are going to compete in it long before the person gets voted out. That’s B.S.! We all know that when somebody gets voted out at tribal the producers work in the middle of the night or in the early morning setting up whatever the duel will be based on the two people that are in the duel and based on who Jeff and producers want to tip the balance for. Elyse had her chance to beat Christine in anything that didn’t involve the lame shuffle board challange. But that wasn’t the case. Christiine will beat Mikayla next week most likely and the other person after that and come back into the game. We’ve seen all this before with Matt! I want to see the challanger win a duel instead of the boring routine of the champion going on a winning streak.
I would actually like to see a challenge at RI. Shuffle board? Come on…that challenge stunk. It would have been nice to see those two compete in an actual challenge. The challenge “dream team” blew it on that one.
What’s so wrong with that? Matt DESERVED to do what he did last season; he was a great guy with a kind heart who deserved to get back in the game. Sadly, he was too stupid to actually DO anything with it. But, what’s wrong with Christine continuing to win? She’s EARNING her way back into the game. I really don’t want to see her get knocked by this point; it wouldn’t be right. Seriously, think about it; if Ozzy is voted off next week and beats her, he could come back in after only two duels, while Christine had to suffer through five of them! How is that fair? It was also like Andrea from last season; she JUST got to redemption island, then beat out the more-deserving males to get back in the game. REALLY hated it when that happened, since she did not deserve it and she did nothing for the game. A complete flop right there.
I don’t like Christine. She’s a nasty lady. I also hate seeing the same person win over and over again. Seeing the Champion always defeating the challanger is beyond played out. When Matt did it, it was different. He was the first. So it was the first time happening. And Matt was a good positive guy that had strong faith. Christine is negative, she’s in that we’ve seen it before category because she’s the second person to do it and she’s not a likeable person and has a bad attitude. If she earns her way back into the game it won’t mean a thing to me. I don’t think it’s about deserving Josh. But if it is then Christine deserves to get what’s coming to her for being such a nasty person.
Andrea deserved to win survivor last season, she is the only one who worked for her position in the game. Not Rob, I’m starting to think you don’t actually watch survivor you only read about it.
The entire point of RI is that it is easier to get back the later you go. This rewards someone who had a decent enough social/strategic game to not get sent to RI in the first episode.
I am enjoying this season but I did have to laugh at Jeff’s last answer about a favourite losing it at the next challenge. Who is considered a favourite this season? Is there a favourite?

Boston Rob deserved the win last season Micbe. Not that dumb blonde Andrea. It is he that worked very hard and earned his million dollars.
May I ask an unrelated question? Did I see a little clip of Russell himself when they were showing and talking about his nephews walk? Or did I just imagin that?

Probst has a point, and if not for Brandon showing he’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer I’d say Brandon is deliberately showing his instability as a strategy. There’s no way in hell anyone would vote for Brandon to win, not only because of his behavior, but because he’s Russell’s nephew, and if Brandon were smarter he’d understand that. But his erratic behavior, if it could be contained long enough, would guarantee a FTC appearance and 2nd place with anyone else at the merge except maybe Ozzy. Right now if I were on the jury and the Final Tribal were between Ozzy and Brandon, I would actually vote for Brandon so that Ozzy couldn’t win.
I see your point. The problem is, with Edna, they are likely to lose the next challenge, unless Ozzy’s tribe royally messes up… always possible. Which means they enter the merge without the #’s. Now do you imagine Brandon will turn off the crazy at post merge tribal, or will he continue to spill all the secrets of his alliance? If Albert wants to tip that house of cards, all he has to do is go to Brandon, and tell him Coach has been hiding the HI all of this time…. kaboom!
There has never been any crazy to turn off. Brandon has been as sane as any average person that isn’t a Hantz hater like you Kaye.
Coach’s team has Edna and Ozzy’s team has Cochran so they are pretty even as far as having one person who isn’t great in challenges.
