'Days of Our Lives' shakeup: Co-Exec Producer out

More changes on the NBC daytime serial Days of Our Lives — but this time, it’s behind the camera. EW has confirmed that Co-Executive Producer Noel Maxam is out and former Passions Executive Producer Lisa De Cazotte will take over, instead.

Maxam only joined the show in June along with Greg Meng, who will stay on board as co-executive producer. Soap Opera Network first reported the news.

Maxam and Meng were brought on to “reset” the daytime drama to include “more contemporary stories based on the solid foundation of the Days history of family, romance, and drama.” Translation: They’re trying to keep Days as relevant as possible to ensure that soaps continue to have a place in daytime for as long as possible.

Several high-profile changes have been made on the soap. Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn are back, as are Patrick Muldoon and Christie Clark. In the meantime, the producers have increased the size of the sets by adding the new Horton Town Square.

Soaps are a dying medium. The changes will not save NBC’s last soap.

    • Flip

They aren’t dying. People just need to start watching again.

  • Rock Hard

    Expect cancellation sometime next year.

    • Flip

No. Days was recently renewed through September 2013.

Passions is my favourite soap of all time, so I am delighted that Lisa de Cazotte is coming on to exec-produce. Hopefully she and the new writers can make Days as exciting as Passions was!

    • Gee

I hope not! I don’t want any sickening sweet Miguel and Charity story line or the Vincent he/she/it story line.

Days Of Our Lives is a great soap and, sadly, only one of a very few left. Thankfully, they’ve brought back many and renewed writing for the rich history of the show.

I been watching days for about 30 years now, but im not gone watch two men kissing and my wife want eather. b ok to conseal it, i just dont like to watch them do it.

I watched the show every day faithfully but when they dumped 6 fo the characters that I found interesting in one week the show lost my interest. I have to admit it had some ludicrus plots this summer but if a producer wants to keep a genre alive don’t throw half the cast off and bring back people who haven’t been on in years that those of us who have only watched for less than 4 years don’t have the first idea of who in the hell they are.

Oh boo hoo. Long-time fans like me are BACK to watching now that Marlena and John and Carrie and Austin are back. We outnumber new fans, so you may as well quit watching because we can replace you and then some.

  • dee123

More Passions people is only a good thing.

Judging by that pic of Drake & Deidre, I take it DOOL is back to doing weird, supernatural stories about tight-faced aliens that invade Salem and torture the inhabitants by NEVER changing their facial expressions…

    • Flip

Actually, Dee and Drake both look great on screen. Neither have had plastic surgery.

      • jeri jackson

John and spouse sure have had surgery..john more than her….for sure…I love the show, story lines etc…I “hate ” the new Austin…..total miss cast…..total mistake. no carisma, no personality……out ! out!.

Now if only ABC will get smart (duh!) and totally reboot flailing soap General Hospital. Yes, GH got a new head writer months ago but sadly, the show hasn’t improved. Just a different writer doing the same old mantra…violence (Dante shot again!), darkness (Lucky’s drug addiction), and non-sensical casting decisions (the aging of Kristina). I give kudos to Days for at least trying to improve. If Days does ever get canceled, it won’t be for a lack of doing everything it can to stop it. GH, on the other hand, gave up about 10 years ago (when I stopped watching faithfully) but I still hold out hope. The Chew (what replaced All My Children) is not NOT necessarily setting the ratings on fire and continues to ignite the fans’ ire. I wish Days much luck and GH, well, you seem to have sealed your fate. Buh-bye.

I used to watch DAYS back in the ’70′s and ’80′s when I was home with my kids. It was fun then — the original Bo/Hope storyline was my favorite. But I tried watching again last week (after two decades away) and it felt like NOTHING HAD CHANGED AT ALL! If this show truly wants to be relevant and modern, it needs to drop the annoying music, pick up the pace, and bring in writers who know how to write good dialogue. Soap operas aren’t dying (take a look at REVENGE), but the old fashioned daytime format certainly is. Just because it’s on during the day doesn’t mean the show has to look and feel like it’s the 1980′s again! Forget bringing back the old-timers — just bring the entire show into the 21st century!

    • Flip

Disagree. Soaps should feel like SOAPS, not primetime. If you try to change what works with soaps, you’ll lose all the fans. I would never watch what you just suggested.

The problem with daytime soaps is that it’s not possible to sustain the rapid pace of storytelling we find interesting in today’s society with a 5-hour per week format. That said, I am so glad that Days dumped a bunch of marginal characters and is refocusing on its core families.

I started watching again after a 2.5 year absence thanks to the return of Hall & Hogestyn. I think Days 2.0 is still finding its legs but the show is infinitely more watchable than it was during the Higley years. I hope this newest change helps the show stay on the air.

The Internet has killed soaps. I have no need to turn on my TV any longer. I get what I want when I want. And I don’t have to be forced fed rotton stories I don’t want to watch. I do believe however that Days has started doing the right things again, by listening to it’s viewers in person and not on the net. I even started making a date with my television again.

  • tana

actually if they would show the numbers from dvr (time shifted) watching…i bet we would see that soaps are watched much more than many night time shows.

  • Teresa

I love Days of Our Lives but 7 minutes of commercials every 7 minutes – just about over it. Seems like more commercials than the show.

TO THE WRITERS OF DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Here is what you need to do in order to have the ratings of this show shoot through the roof! —Immediately get rid of the following characters: Rafe, Gabi, Melanie, Daniel, and Madison. BRING BACK the following characters immediately: Anna DiMera, Rex Brady, Cassie Brady, Eric Brady, Shane and Kimberly Donovan, Andrew Donovan (college-age now), Jeanne Donovan (college-age now), Shawn and Belle Brady, Chelsea Brady, Billie Reed, Phillip Kiriakis, Max Brady, Frankie Brady, Mike Horton, Jeremy Horton, Melissa Horton, Nathan Horton, Sarah Horton, Bill and Laura Horton, Kayla Johnson, Stephanie Johnson, J.J. Deveraux (college-age now), Joey and Victor Kiriakis (the twins of Adrienne and Justin, now college-aged), and finally, bring back Brady’s mother, Isabella Black, from the dead. Keep all the rest of the current cast except for the ones I have mentioned above that need to be gotten rid of, and do this immediately. This is the cast all of America wants to see, it’s all of the Hortons and Bradys that have been missing for way too long. Write exciting stories for them all, and have them all involved in good plots. I could do this, as I am an excellent writer. (I feel that I could write this soap into a number one slot with skyrocketing ratings, or maybe even put it into prime-time because it would be so excellent, but I doubt anyone will believe me on here). Anyhow, this is what NEEDS TO BE DONE to keep Days of Our Lives on and it would be THE number one show of ANY network, whether it’s on in daytime or primetime. Guarantee it! Thanks for listening.
