HBO isn’t commenting and we have some doubts, but mega-producer Brian Grazer claims Stephen King’s Dark Tower saga will air on the premium network.
In an interview with MTV, Grazer — who’s seeking to produce the miniseries along with Ron Howard as both a movie and companion TV series — said, “We’re going to do ['The Dark Tower'] with HBO. We’ll do the TV with HBO, and we’ll do the movie with … to be determined. We’ll do it right.”
King’s series of fantasy novels was originally set up at Universal as part of a costly. Grazer indicated that actor Javier Bardem is still on board to star and that the production has cut its planned budget to attract potential distributors. “We’re going to do that movie. We’ve lost $45 million out of the budget. When people say no to you enough, then you have to lose money, which we’ve done without harming the scope of the film.”
HBO has found some success on the fantasy front with Game of Thrones, but not to a level that one would think the network would double down on the genre with this ambitious of a project. Plus the whole movie + series aspect seems likely to cause confusion — if you’re a network doing an adaptation, would you want to share it with a movie? Still, we’re pulling for Roland and Co. ending up somewhere, and a network like HBO or Starz would make a great home.

…..romance can’t be single—-
They won’t mess up this story, will they?
What story?
the “story” was already messed up! just read books 6 an 7!
Amen to that, Buster.
Yeah, can’t broke what’s already broken.
I still wish Viggo Mortesen would play Roland. Wherever this franchise lands.
I second that.
I third that
i totally agree.
Love Viggo, but Roland had dark hair
ever hear of hair dye?
IMO Javier Bardem is not Roland. Viggo Mortensen is.
Agreed. Have Bardem play The Man in Black.
Seconded!
Good call.
THIS!!! Wonderful idea.
I agree … that would be perfect casting!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Please let this be true! And I’ll add my name to the list of people who want Viggo Mortensen for Roland.
I always saw Roland as a tall, dark and ugly type. I always got a Spanish vibe based on the names of places and things. I also think Viggo is overrated so……
Only if they do it as a TV series like Game of Thrones. I don’t believe any combination of movies and mini-series can do The Dark Tower Justice.
Amen to this suggestion. Splitting it up between TV and films is silly, costly and unwieldy.
what’s silly is you suggesting that something can’t be done. What do you know of what these people are capable of? And what do you care if it’s costly? If this this ends up sucking it will be because the source material sucks, plain and simple. Oh, and yes, the source material does indeed suck. Very very much.
“…as part of a costly.” Huh? EW.com’s lack of editing strikes again!
It’s really gotten intolerable. I mean, the piece is four short paragraphs long. Can’t someone actually read it before posting?
well, that’s about as much editing that Dark Tower book 7 got… So it sort of fits.
Is it wrong to say “it’s about time?” this should have been the idea from the jump, let’s hope it’s true and enjoy HBOs excellent treatment of TV series!! Very excited.
I always thought it should be Kevin Bacon. He looks a little like S King, which is neat.
Javier Bardem as Roland. Timothy Olyphant as Eddie. Thandie Newton as Susan. Darth Vadar as The Crimson King.
There, casting is done.
except Darth Vadar is a character, not an actor you moron
Timpthy Olyphant should be Roland not Eddie.
Eddie is a young cracked out dude. Timothy is in his mid-forties and way too buff.
And Stephen, I love ya buddy, but you can’t play yourself. (wink wink)
Oh crud, wait, Robert Downey Jr as Eddie – Only clear choice.
Try reading the books more closely, especially the part about how old Eddie is. RDJ’s beyond any hope of playing Eddie.
Johnny Depp should be the Gunslinger. Eddie should be Ian Somerhalder. Please, Please Please Do not cast that girl from True Blood as Detta Walker. I’d rather have Katerina Graham or Halle Berry.
@ Jason: I couldn’t disagree more with your choice of Johnny Depp, but I agree a thousand times over when you suggest Ian Somerhalder for the role of Eddie. Also, “Tara” is way too young to be Susana. And Halle Berry?!?! Just no.
Taraji Henson as Susannah, maybe?
Way too old to play Eddie. James mcavoy as Eddie FOR SURE
Good call, Cindy…
Do it an entire mini-series on HBO and do it right!
“Tara” from True Blood would be perfect for Susana Dean
Steven Moyer would make a good Roland – Please do not use Javier Bardem – he looks to short and stocky for Roland’s character
Bardem is an awesome actor. I could see him pulling it off. He has to lose some wait, tighten up his face a bit by getting leaner. There’s gotta be somebody out there that has his chops but looks more like Roland. Ray Liotta? Daniel Craig? I don’t know about Viggo. He’s sort of a 1 horse pony. Maybe I’m wrong.
But Viggo’s “one horse” seems to be right up Roland’s alley. I do like the suggestion of Daniel Craig, though. (PS I love Viggo)
you mean one trick pony pal, and Viggo is anything but. He would be great int he roll, but I hope he doesn’t take it because the series is overrated garbage, and that is from a King fan
No I meant One Horse. Seemed kind of stupid to call Viggo Mortensen a pony. I saw him in LOTR, didn’t overly impress me, but yes he was awesome in a bunch of other stuff. I just don’t think he’s Roland.
And by the way Jodipo, I know you are Mensa candidate “pal” but you misused the the word “roll”. You just technically said that Viggo Mortensen would make a great sandwich.
You meant to use a phrase that does’t exist?
@Beeantown: “No I meant One Horse. Seemed kind of stupid to call Viggo Mortensen a pony.”
=====================================
You are still calling Viggo a pony, but “one-horse “doesn’t make any sense as a description for the type of pony. “One-trick pony” is a pony who can do only one trick. What would a one-horse pony be?
HAH! I just spelled weight “wait”. UGH.
“The Man in Black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed… ” those words changed my life.
I noticed it but figured it was a typo. Don’t let it ruin your day.
““The Man in Black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed… ” those words changed my life.”
I wholeheartedly agree with that statement
