'X Factor' to allow voting by Twitter

The X Factor will become the first-ever TV series to allow voting by Twitter.

The network and producers announced a partnership Tuesday night with the social media company to give fans the ability to a vote for their favorite finalists. The partnership begins next week after the live performance show on Nov. 2.

If you’re thinking that Tweeting votes seems potentially chaotic, here’s the fine print: You’re not voting with Tweets, but by using your account’s direct message feature. X Factor will also allow voting through the usual suspects — online via the show’s Web site, text messaging and, yup, dialing the darn phone. More details on signing up to vote by Twitter here. As part of the partnership, Factor producers are also threatening this:

“Periodically, viewers at home also will be able to see real-time Twitter data on-air.”

Adds a Twitter representative: “Fans flock to Twitter during live television events and have been voicing their opinions with Tweets for years. We’re thrilled to see the creators of The X Factor push the envelope further by being the first television show to formalize this phenomenon through Twitter voting.”

What do you think of X Factor‘s, um, envelope pushing?

It is nice club for rich men or pretty girls mate.
You do not need to be wealthy or famous, but you can meet your true love, it’s worthy a try.

x-factor should follow the voice and produce studio versions of performances and have itunes purchases count towards votes. see whose music people would actually pay for.

    • hlynn

Lee – that is a great idea! Loved that part of The Voice!

  • Mhela

Does this mean that people outside the US can vote?

    • Rock Golf

Effectively, yes. And why not? Canadians buy music too.

  • B

They should rename this show “Malcom X-Factor” because of its obvious racial bias…the Astro kid is annoying not talented but put through anway!

    • Micah

      Wow. (And, that’s “Malcolm”.)

    • Martin L.

Well it’s about time don’t you think?

      • B

huh?..Hip Hop, Rap, and R&B have dominated the mainstream for years..so what do you mean about it being about time?..shows like this should show more of a cross section, Rock, Country, and Jazz are still viable genres of music, but you would not know that by watching this show!

      • @ B

        change the channel!

  • Q

Sounds like a bad idea. Can you vote an unlimited number of times like with American Idol? If so, I assume teen girls will highjack this show as well.

    • Micah

Probably irrelevant. Said tweens would probably just create multiple Twitter accounts (which is easy enough to do), if there were a limit per account.

      • Q

That’s why Twitter and online voting is a bad idea. It should just be phone calls/texts with one vote per phone line. Of course they’ll never do this since they need to be able to crow about the record number of votes each week.

      • Mike

@Q – That’s Idol’s claim to fame with the whole # of votes thing. X-factor may do things differently. Though, I’m not sure that they have done for the UK format and other countries either.

  • jpratm

    Boo still not watching.

  • anon7777

I read an article (Hollywood reporter) somewhere else saying voting is by DM to their twitter account, but you can’t send a DM unless @thexfactorusa follows you. are they planning to follow every single person that follows them???

  • The Hypnotoad

    Asking for trouble.

  • LOL

    America loves crap.

  • Q.H.

    This show’s still on?

  • hesjr1972

LeRoy Bell, age 60, unbelievable. If anything, if does not win X-FACTOR, then all the skin care companies she shower him with millions to pitch their skin care line. I tip my hat to you LeRoy Bell. Keep doing whatever you are doing to preserve yourself.

  • Dumbledore Fluffernutter

See, Leroy Bell has this portrait of himself hidden away in his attic…

  • SpeedArrow1964

All over the World Tweet, Great Idea. So let RT to all and shouts for your Favourite’s Contestant. This is Fans time to vote no more for Judgers. So lets Tweet Tweet, is fun huh to vote in this X- Factor USA.

Unbelievable how you people are such ignorant towards The X Factor, first of all The Voice has copied many features of The X Factor, one of them is that you can download the performances on itunes. The voice was created in Holland in 2010 while The X Factor in the U.K in 2004. So what you might think X Factor took after the voice is not true cause The X Factor existed much earlier than it. The ratings will surge further more in the future, nobody is commenting about the X Factor amazing stage, light, and production. How fantastic is that, so modern. The show has this technology for years and thanks god Idol and The Voice didn’t copy that too. Trust me guys X Factor as a format and the way they do it, is by far the best singing competition EVER. No wonder why they’re doing this thing with the Twitter votes, cause they are always the first to bring innovations and they always will be.

I think Rachel crow should go throu.
