Showtime renews 'Homeland' for a second season

Tags: , , , News

Showtime has renewed Homeland, a drama about a CIA officer who becomes convinced that the intelligence that led to the rescue of a U.S. soldier was a setup and connected to an Al Qaeda terrorist plot. The series stars Claire Danes, Damian Lewis and Mandy Patinkin and is from Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa. The pay network ordered 12 new episodes.

The series debuted as Showtime’s highest-rated freshman drama ever, generating 4.4 million in its first week. Sunday’s episode also delivered the series’ best ratings-to-date. “Homeland is just getting started,” said Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins in a statement. “Clearly, the overall growth from week one to week four demonstrates that this show is hitting a nerve in the cultural zeitgeist. Alex and Howard have created a psychological thriller that holds special reverence in the post 9/11 world.”

Production on season 2 will begin next spring.

I hope Damian Lewis does more American mainstream movies from now on and becomes a bigger star.

Totally agree. He is not only hot but a great actor, too. Life was a great show…too bad it was on NBC, the network of doomed television.

      • asher

I agree, I find him hot and talented, too!

  • tim

    this show is fantastic

I think the show is extremely well written except that the President would be have been the one to greet Brody upon his arrival and I find that a terrible flaw in the writing unless the producers don’t want to remind us that we have a Black President. Just curious.

If you show “Obama”, then you are essentially saying that Jamey Sheridan’s character is Joe Biden. Given that the VP in the series is being treated as a war criminal, I can understand their wanting to keep the President and Vice President as fictional characters. If Jamey Sheridan is clearly Joe Biden, it would severely limit the creative license they could take with the character.

This is bad news. It means the season will end in an unsatisfying cliffhanger

    • Bill

Yep. Shows like this should just be mini-series not on going shows.

    • sm

how is that a bad thing? if the show is good, and you are enjoying it, wouldn’t want to see where else it can go?

      • Blues Magoos

Not every story must be an ongoing one. The should be a closed-end story

Yay! I have loved Damian Lewis since Band of Brothers! So glad they renewed. The show is really well written with a real cohesion between the cast. Glad to see some shows given a real chance at success.

  • Rita

    I love this show…

  • Alex

So glad! I was looking for news about this show, but no one mention it. Last episode final scene was great, the flirting between Daniel and Clare Danes add an interesting angle and you can see something is starting there.

  • Brady

I love the show, but I am seriously worried about the prospects of future seasons. This plot seems like it would be best contained within one season, and I would hate to see this show got strung along for years like Dexter, or more recently The Killing.

    • Brady

      *get strung along

Woo hoo!! I wasn’t sure about Homeland before it started, but I gave it a chance and I’m so glad I did; it’s excellent.

  • pinkpetunia

Fantastic series! One of the best to come along in quite a while!

As someone who has had a tiny, tiny, misunderstanding with Homeland Security, the CIA, the FBI, etc., that resulted in being stuck in NYC on a no fly list and having all accounts frozen, I still love the fine line that Homeland walks and the tension that is built up in each episode, now if we could only get some more Mandy Patinkin time….

  • Chad

Happy for the cast, but hope they don’t get too attached to Mandy Patinkin. Considering his track record ( Chicago Hope, Dead Like Me, Criminal Minds), he will be bored and ask to be released from the show prior to a third season.

    • Annie

He is the only weak link in my opinion.

      • Sylvia Sproul

I disagree that Mandy Potinkin was a weak link. I think his portrayal was well done.

  • Jeannie

Good! I wasn’t too interested when I read the premise of Homeland but I decided to give it a chance because I enjoy most of Showtime’s original series. I’m so glad I did, it’s an excellent, complex drama with a fantastic cast and some truly great acting.

  • john

Great news I’m actually enjoying Homeland more than Dexter this season.

  • legallyblonde

    I LOVE this show.
    Showtime outdoes HBO again.

    AMC #1, then Showtime.

Claire Danes is fantastic. I had no idea she was such an amazing actress. And what a story.

  • Eric

Really great news, it’s easily the best new show this fall season proving yet again that the broadcast networks are still struggling to keep up with cable. I was actually unaware of how well it was doing on Showtime so it’s a bit of a pleasant surprise. Although I have echo some of the concerns that there might not be enough material here for more than one season. Here’s hoping it doesn’t turn out to be a repeat of The Killing.
