'Survivor,' ABC ratings leap thanks to World Series cluster-fudge

UPDATED: The World Series was supposed to air Wednesday night. So all of Fox’s rivals ran repeats to avoid the heavy competition — psych! With Game 6 rained out at the last minute, Fox re-aired episodes of Glee. So here we are, the week before the November sweeps kick in, with everybody needlessly firing blanks in primetime.

Well, almost everybody: Female-skewing ABC hedged its bets by repeating Modern Family, but the rest of its lineup ran intact. Smart play. The network was able to take advantage of the fake-out and score series highs for its other comedies. The Middle (10.2 million, 3.1) was up slightly this week. Then Suburgatory (9.8 million, 3.4) and Happy Endings (8.3 million, 3.5) jumped. And finally Revenge (8.7 million, 2.8) climbed to its second-best number of the season.

Also last night, CBS aired Survivor (11.6 million, 3.4) and that did well also — its best rating since its September premiere (great episode too). The focus now shifts to tonight and Friday — Will Fox’s rivals who bet against a Game 7 airing tonight and planned original episodes get hammered by Game 6? And what will happen to NBC’s Grimm and Chuck premieres if there is a Game 7 on Friday?

I’ll be glad when this baseball crab is over! Cops hasn’t been on in two months!

      Crap

Who watches the world series anyway? If the networks ran new episodes, very few viewers would tune into the world series unless you are fans of the 2 teams involved.

      • pirate

There are still a lot of real baseball fans out there who ALWAYS watch the world series no matter who is playing. Get your head out of the sand. You’re just wrong on this one.

    • TV Junkie

You’re right about COPS. As little as they show it in the first place, than it premieres and seems like it immediately goes into re-runs. Yes, it is because of the World Series, but I think they are filming about 12-16 Cops a year -Tops-. Last season was the most pathetic season to date, with the abuse of repeats showing more than originals.

As a true blue fan, I totally agree with you! The near constant repeats are very irritating but I’m hoping once baseball is over, we will have a long stretch of new episodes!

  • Woot

Remember when Happy Endings got like 3 million viewers for it’s first season?

    • no cars go

i’m so glad people are watching the show, it’s seriously funny and deserves to stick around for awhile.

Dear ABC: Full season of Happy Endings, please.

    • kate middleton

      It was hilarious last night!

    • asher

I didn’t watch last season, but I am glad I am watching now. It is really funny!

    • Lauren

I know! I’ve been watching since the beginning, and I am thrilled that it is catching on. It is hilarious!! I laugh so hard every week while watching it.

  • LOL

    America loves crap.

    • Betsy

And American truck drivers love your mom!

    • @LOL

We heard you the first million times. Get a life troll

  • Chelsea

    Woohoo Happy Endings!

  • McProphet

The World Series is a snooze-fest. Just put it on ESPN, Spike, or TBS or some other station where it won’t be watched by the general population so I can get my chuckles on already.

  • Saran

So happy for Suburgatory, the best new comedy on TV!

    • Lala

Ugh, it’s annoying. And I HATE Jeremy Sisto.

  • Zoe

This is what I’ve been saying all week: not everyone wants to watch the World Series. I bet ABC would have gotten good numbers for those shows even if the game had gone on.

  • mark

How can you think the world series is a snoozefest this year? Must not be a baseball fan… perhaps you should stop typing?

  • sweetd

Any word on a full season pick up for Happy Endings? I had heard they had six more scripts orders, but will they be produced/aired?

  • John A

Wow, where did EW get those initial numbers? This morning’s report from them had Happy Endings with 11.7 million viewers (same with The Middle). Even extrapolating from the already released HH ratings, that’s pretty impossible. Way to do some shoddy initial reporting EW. This is why you have very few comments here and everyone uses tvbythenumbers.

  • AImster

This year’s World Series has been riveting, especially with what went down in Game 5 with BullpenGate and Albert Pujols’ ill-advised hit-and-run. I don’t care how far out of the strike zone the pitch sails — if YOU put the hit-and-run sign on, then it is YOUR job to protect the runner instead of leaving him high and dry. (I don’t favor either team, I just want to see it go seven games). And for those who think baseball is boring, have you SEEN Rangers manager Ron Washington’s dugout reactions to his team scoring?

    • Shannon

Very good recap of the World Series. I’m loving it too. But, how can you not like either team. The Rangers have a great team even though I’m not a Texas fan and STL well they have Pujols. Doh!

  • João Paulo

    Happy Endings deserves this numbers.

  • JT

Why didn’t EW comment on the fact that both Glee repeats tanked so badly! The first was beaten by Up All Night/Whitney repeats and the second by Harry’s Law repeat.
Also the Modern Family repeat got a 4.4 and more than 10 million viewers
    O.O

  • Matt2

W O W for ABC! All of their scripted series hit a 3.0 or better save for Revenge, which still pulled an outstanding 10pm demo, 2.8. Shocking to see ABC basically maintain 10 million viewers for 3 solid hours especially when Modern Family was a repeat(11.5 million viewers and a 4.4 demo- MF is such a badass comedy). Even more shocking- the success ABC is having with its scripted programming:
    New Series:
Once Upon A Time- 13 million viewers
Last Man Standing- 10 million viewers
    Suburgatory- 10 million viewers
    Revenge- 9 million viewers

If ABC’s spring series are as good as touted, will ABC start to takeover?
