NBC’s jungle-romance summer dating show Love in the Wild is getting a second season.

Love in the Wild pairs up singles in exotic challenges hoping to spark a relationship. The next round of the Endemol-produced show will have some new twists to spice up the drama (the first season was so successful at hooking people up, it lacked urgency at times). “The success of the relationships formed on the first season of this series is a testament to the unique format of this show,” said NBC reality chief Paul Telegdy. “We look forward to an even more compelling season as the series will return with new format twists and a new set of contestants who will conquer the wild — or not — to find love.” The first round averaged 5.5 million viewers and a 1.8 rating in the adult demo.

'American Horror Story' ratings go ... up!

After a scary second-week dip in the ratings, FX’s American Horror Story rose in the Nielsens for its third episode.

AHS delivered 2.6 million viewers and a 2 million adults 18-49. That’s up 5 percent overall and 12 percent in the demo. Moreover, the gain was despite its movie lead-in declining 16 percent. Good sign for Ryan Murphy’s latest (and, hey, it’s also this week’s EW cover story).

Were the news channels' graphic images of Muammar Gaddafi's body too much?

In the wake of today’s news that deposed Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi is presumed dead, images surfaced of Gaddafi’s corpse. Though U.S. officials are still confirming Gaddafi’s death, Stateside 24-hour networks had a tough call to make as to whether they should broadcast the cell phone footage originally obtained by Al Jazeera. Many of them (CBS, Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC) decided to go ahead and air the images with a disclaimer that they were graphic and disturbing. But was it too far? READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' preview: What to expect now that Joshua Jackson is back -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Last week’s episode of Fox’s Fringe — the fourth of the sci-fi drama’s fourth season — saw the return of Joshua Jackson’s character Peter Bishop, MIA since last May’s season finale. After a time-travel adventure that culminated with a reboot of history, Peter was forgotten by those who knew him as an adult, because in the new version of time, he had died when he was a child, not just in one world, but on two parallel Earths. (The show makes this easier to understand than the previous sentence might suggest.) Yet Peter’s essence endured somewhere on the ethereal plane, and more, his spirit was trying to break back into the realm of flesh and bone, brick, and mortar. He accomplished the mission last week, splashing down like an astronaut falling to Earth. Or rather a naked astronaut. Because he was naked.

Yet Peter’s return to a more conventional semblance of human existence brings with it some unconventional problems — like the fact that the timeline is alien to him and no one “remembers” him. READ FULL STORY »

'Parks and Recreation': Come inside April and Andy's Halloween party! -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

There will be no new episode of Parks and Recreation tonight (trick!). But we have a preview clip from next Thursday’s episode to tide you over (treat!). As you’ve probably guessed from that photo, the plot revolves around Halloween: Andy and April throw a costume party, during which Andy is shirtless (as former UFC champ Chuck Liddell) and Ben is mirthless (as himself). Press play with those salty fingers and then speculate wildly about Ron Swanson’s possible attire. READ FULL STORY »

'Vampire Diaries': Steven R. McQueen says tonight's the night for answers (sort of)

SPOILER ALERT: Fans hoping tonight to see more of Katherine and Jeremy together in Charlotte where they found Mikael, the vampire who hunts vampires (namely Klaus), won’t get their wish. “It’s the first day back at school, and I’m back. I think Katherine’s still in that cave,” Steven R. McQueen says. The good news: We’ll finally start getting some answers as to why he — and now Matt, apparently — can see ghosts and what ghost Vicki is after. “Jeremy’s got ties to reality, Bonnie and his family, and now he’s got ties to people in his past, and they start to clash and wear on each other. It’s kind of ghost world versus reality, and Jeremy’s stuck making choices,” he says. “This episode, you kind of figure out why this connection to the spiritual world is getting stronger. That is all revealed. Things are just gonna get more and more heated in these next couple of episodes.” Translation: There’ll still be plenty for us to learn next week.

With that being all he could tease about the show’s plot, we were stuck asking two very important questions. Does he already have a Halloween costume picked out? “I don’t. Everyone’s been hounding me to kind of get on that,” he laughs. “They’re doing EyeCon [a Vampire Diaries fan convention from Oct. 28 - Oct. 30] up here. That will take up most of my days, and then I’m sure I’ll try to find a Halloween party or two.” Will we be seeing Jeremy working out after hours in the school gym like we now know Matt does? “Hey, let’s hope so,” he says. “We’ve got great writers, and they write good story lines for us. If they ask me to do a couple push-ups here and there, then I guess I’ll just have to do that.”

World Series Game 1 ratings down slightly from last year

game-1

The first game of the World Series helped Fox win Wednesday night, but the telecast was slightly lower in the ratings than last year.

The Rangers vs. Cardinals face-off was seen by 14 million viewers, down just 2 percent from 2010. Some thought the game would sink below the 2006 Game 1 all-time low of 12.8 million, but the program avoided that fate. For more baseball’s impact on Fox’s fall, see the EW story: Is the World Series still worth it for Fox?.

Across the dial, broadcast rivals largely shrugged at the baseball competition. Which isn’t to say nothing interesting happened. READ FULL STORY »

An X Files veteran and former Seattle Grace bigwig is signing onto TNT’s Dallas.

Mitch Pileggi has joined the show for a multi-episode arc playing Harris Ryland, owner of Ryland Trucking and Shipping. He’s described as an “alpha male” and Ann’s (Brenda Strong) ex-husband.

Since his role as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner on X Files, Pileggi has been the king of multi-episode arcs on hit series. He’s had stints on Sons of Anarchy, Supernatural, Medium, and Grey’s Anatomy. TNT’s Dallas was recently rocked by the news that co-star Larry Hagman has been diagnosed with cancer. But the actor best known for the original 1980s version of Dallas is still expected to participate in new show, which is set to premiere next summer. If you haven’t yet seen the Dallas trailer, you can find it here.

President Obama to sit down with Jay Leno

President Obama will have a late night chat with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show next week. White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer says in a tweet that Obama will be on the show Tuesday. Obama will be traveling on the West Coast next week, raising money for his re-election bid and trying to boost public support for his jobs bill.

This will be Obama’s fourth time on Leno’s show. He made two appearances as a presidential candidate. His last appearance was in March 2009, shortly after taking office. NBC, which airs Leno’s show, said at the time that Obama was the first sitting president ever to appear on The Tonight Show.

'Happy Days' lawsuit: Fraud claim thrown out by judge

Categories: Lawsuits, Television, TV Biz

Back in April, members of the cast of Happy Days, including Marion Ross, Erin Moran, Don Most, Anson Williams, and the estate of the late Tom Bosley, filed a lawsuit against CBS, claiming that the network violated breach of contract and owed them for merchandising revenues that they had been cut out of. The $10 million suit claimed the stars of the sitcom “were guaranteed five percent of royalties profits if their images appeared on a product.”

CNN.com reported yesterday that the fraud claim was thrown out by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White, who ruled in favor of CBS. READ FULL STORY »

Jeff Probst on episode 6 of 'Survivor: South Pacific'

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: South Pacific.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Let’s dive into this strength versus loyalty debate that raged at Tribal Council. Fun Fact! Not counting any season in which there were pre-merge tribe swaps or consolidations — because that muddles the picture in terms of where loyalties are —  there have actually been only five Survivor seasons (Thailand, Palau, Tocantins, Samoa, Redemption Island) in which one tribe has gone into the merge with more members than the other. And in two of those five instances, the winner actually came from the tribe with the numbers disadvantage. So, I’ll ask you: What is more important, numbers or unity?
JEFF PROBST:
Wow. Amazing fact. Great question. Seeing as how I have never played the game this is clearly an armchair opinion. I’d say that in an ideal situation, you want the #’s at the merge until you get the advantage and can knock them off. But you want the other side to have the majority of the members on the jury because you are ultimately going to have to betray your own alliance to get to the end and if you do that they typically won’t give you the vote at the end. Depending on when you merge that can get tricky as the jury doesn’t always start with the first person voted out. The number of players at the start of the game also impacts the numbers. Having 20 really complicates things. 16 is a much more manageable number, but we don’t do 16 anymore. READ FULL STORY »

From American Idol to Broadway to… Genoa City? Hey, don’t knock it: The Young and the Restless needed a singer so they called upon season 3 runner-up Diana DeGarmo to play one – but with a bit of a twist.

Starting Oct. 31, DeGarmo will portray a Jersey girl named Angelina, the ambitious daughter of mob boss Angelo Veneziano (Mike Starr). His little angel wants a career in music, but she’s not exactly the next Mariah Carey. Check out DeGarmo’s get-up. (Eat your heart out, Fantasia?) READ FULL STORY »

Is the World Series still worth it for Fox?

Categories: Television
New-Girl-Baseball

If Fox were pushing around Zooey Deschanel for the Yankees, fans might understand. But for Rangers vs. Cardinals?

Last week’s flap over Fox pushing New Girl a few weeks to make way for baseball coverage and super-sized X Factor episodes had the network in the odd position of having to defend a routine annual practice — shuffling around its programs to make room for MLB coverage.

“I’d prefer not to do it, but I feel we have shows that viewers will come back for,” Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly tells EW. “We could have peppered New Girl and Raising Hope around the schedule. It felt like ultimately we didn’t want to knock them down by getting them lesser ratings in other time periods. It’s easier to say, ‘It’s off for three weeks and then we’re on for the rest of the year.’”

But given the amount of ratings success Fox has enjoyed with entertainment programs this fall (it’s the only broadcaster to have improved in the adult demo), and considering this year’s World Series yawner match-up, it does raise the question: Is disruptive fall baseball coverage still worth it for Fox?
