'The Glades' renewed for third season

The ratings gators haven’t eaten The Glades: The A&E crime drama just scored a third season.

The drama starring Matt Passmore was a fairly easy choice for a pickup. Season two averaged 3.9 million viewers and 1.6 million among adults 18-49, growing slightly in the demo from season one.

The third season of The Glades will premiere –when else? — next summer. A&E currently has three dramas on its schedule, Glades plus Breakout Kings and upcoming Western series Longmire.

'Glee' scoop: Chord Overstreet in negotiations to return

Fox

Chord Overstreet’s character Sam has been MIA from this season of Glee so far, but there’s a good chance that will change in the coming months: EW has confirmed that Overstreet is in negotiations to return as Sam, a.k.a. “Trouty Mouth,” later this year on the Fox hit. (TV Line first reported the news.)

The hope would be for him to do a handful of episodes and then potentially recur. Sam’s departure was explained in the season three premiere by his father getting a job in another town. But the big question is what this will mean for Amber Riley’s Mercedes, who began dating Sam in the season 2 finale but now has a new boyfriend. Meanwhile, a rep for studio 20th Century Fox would not confirm the news.

An alum of Friday Night Lights will don a badge on CSI. EW has learned that Matt Lauria — best known for playing Luke Cafferty on the football drama — will play an arrogant FBI agent on the CBS series.

Lauria’ new alter-ego will be Sac Pratt, a veteran lawdog who apparently comes to Sin City to throw his weight around with D.B. Russell (Ted Danson) and his team. Eventually, Sac plays nice with the Vegas gang.

Lauria will appear in at least three episodes, beginning with episode 9. He recently starred on Fox’s police drama The Chicago Code and the (tragically short-lived) Lipstick Jungle.

'Terra Nova' dinos on Fox scare up more viewers

Categories: TV Ratings

Are the families finally discovering the dinos on Terra Nova? The prehistoric drama posted an 8% gain in adults 18-49 over last week and earned a 2.7 rating/7 share — not enough to help Fox win the hour in the demographic but good news for the very expensive series that’ll wrap its first season in December, according to early results. The show was also up 14% in total viewers from last week, attracting 7.9 million.

Even more folks turned up for House (3.1/7, 8.3 million), which was up 15% versus last week’s telecast. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million viewers.

As usual, CBS was the network to beat. How I Met Your Mother earned a 4.1/12, up 2%, and 9.7 million, followed by 2 Broke Girls (flat at 4.3/11, 11.2 million), Two & A Half Men (5.2/13, down 12%, 14.8 million), Mike & Molly (3.9/9, flat, 11.5 million) and Hawaii Five-0 (3.1/8, up 15%, 10.8 million). Dancing with the Stars on ABC got a boost thanks to ’80s night; the performance episode was up 7% from last week to earn a 3.2/8 and 17.4 million. Castle posted a  2.6/7, up 24% from last week’s season low. It averaged 11.4 million. READ FULL STORY »

Guess who’s coming for Thanksgiving dinner? Sarah Silverman and Jeff Goldblum have booked seats at the table for FX’s The League.

They’ll join a Thanksgiving episode of the comedy series, with Silverman playing Andre’s (Paul Scheer) sister and Jeff Goldblum as Ruxin’s (Nick Kroll) father. “Sarah and Jeff are funny and fearless enough to play Andre’s sister and Ruxin’s father,” said League co-creators Jeff Schaffer and Jackie Marcus Schaffer. “And they didn’t flinch when we told them all of the crazy things they’d be doing with our cast. Fools!”

Silverman  was seen earlier this year in a guest star role on CBS’ The Good Wife. Since wrapping up Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Goldblum has been on Adult Swim’s NTSF:SD:SUV.

A Pretty Little Liars friend from Catherine’s past will step inside the yellow tape of CSI next month.

EW has learned that Annabeth Gish, who played therapist Anne Sullivan on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars this summer, will join the CBS series for a three-episode arc.

She will play Laura, a childhood friend of Catherine’s (Marg Helgenberger) whose husband is investigated by the CSI team. Laura is married to a billionaire head of a military contractor who may (or may not) have played a role in a recent arms theft. (The husband has yet to be cast). Gish’s arc will begin with episode 9 of CSI.

From 2006-08, Gish earned critical praise for her work in Showtime’s Brotherhood as Eileen Caffee, the wife of Rhode Island state representative Tommy Caffee. Her previous credits include The West Wing and The X-Files.

'Dancing with the Stars': J.R. Martinez, who 'doesn't know how to be sexy,' earns his first 10

J-R-Martinez

Karina Smirnoff had to crack the whip on J.R. Martinez to get him into sexy mode for Dancing with the Stars Monday, but her actions paid off big time: The always consistent pair pulled their highest score of the season with a 28 (two 9s and their first 10) for a samba to Gloria Estefan’s “Conga.”

Carrie Ann Inaba called it ”friggin’ amazing.”

“It’s funny, she kept telling me, ‘Be sexy here! Be masculine!’ and I would do something and she’s like, ‘That’s not sexy! That’s
not masculine!’” Martinez — whose first initials stand for Jose Rene – told reporters afterwards. “And I was like, ‘I don’t know how to be sexy!’  I really don’t. It’s not my thing.  I don’t think I’m a sexy and masculine type of guy, but tonight, it was fun. ”It’s great to be on top, but the fact that we got our first 10 of the season was really cool.” READ FULL STORY »

'True Blood' casting call: A biblical new role ... and a very old friend for Eric -- EXCLUSIVE

Categories: Casting, True Blood

As the producers promised, True Blood is introducing several new characters in season 5 — and EW got the early word on two of the roles.

Creator Alan Ball and his team of scribes have put out a casting call for someone to play Nora, a beautiful and intelligent 25-to-35 something who plays a double agent within the Vampire Authority. What’s even better than that? She’s got a big history with Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) because she’s a progeny of Godric. Nora will be a series regular role that may (or may not) involve a little nudity. (It IS True Blood, after all).

Meanwhile, Co-Executive Producer Raelle Tucker told EW that they’ll include a “very significant, strong, mysterious woman at the center of one of our main stories next year … a very familiar and compelling character. It may be someone you’ve heard of before.” Especially if you’ve read the Bible: The True Blood team also put out the call for someone to play Salome, as in THE Salome, daughter of Herodias, from the good book. She’s a powerful ancient vampire (hmm, don’t remember that part from the New Testament) and a world-class seductress who’s also a little mad. So she’ll fit right into Bon Temps.

Any suggestions for Ball and his team?

DVR boosts 'New Girl' ratings to tie '2 Broke Girls'

Zooey Deschanel has caught up to those CBS waitresses.

With the second week of DVR data in, Fox’s New Girl has managed to tie CBS’ 2 Broke Girls season-to-date as the two highest-rated new comedies. One might say this is a bit more impressive for New Girl since it builds from Glee lead-in whereas Broke Girls had that big boost from Two and a Half Men for its debut. Or you could argue that New Girl has the advantage because Broke has aired four episodes (and ratings for new shows tend to dip a little each week) and New Girl has only aired three (since Fox has sent Deschanel away until November … perhaps in search of her show’s missing The). Either way, both are now tied with a 5.5 adult demo average.

Here’s who else really benefited from DVR playback (unlike above, this is just for the second week): READ FULL STORY »

'Walking Dead' season 2 delivers record premiere ratings

walking-dead

Wow: AMC’s The Walking Dead came back stronger than ever. Sunday’s season 2 premiere rolled up 7.3 million viewers. If you count the show’s repeat, that number climbs to 11 million.

The 90-minute Walking Dead return is up 38 percent compared to its Halloween-night debut last year, and is bigger than its finale too — so this is a series high. Last year, if you’ll recall, the numbers started big and actually managed to improve throughout the six-episode run (the finale delivered 6 million viewers). Walking Dead also delivered a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49, which is the real trick (a few cable drama like The Closer have really big audiences, but their average age is mostly above the demo — and this is bigger than most broadcast shows last week). This is more adults in the demo than any basic cable series in history.
