Alloy Entertainment — the minds behind teen series Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, The Secret Circle, and many more — is currently producing a new web series, Dating Rules From My Future Self, which is adding several new cast members. EW has exclusively learned that Taylor Kinney (The Vampire Diaries), Alison Becker (Parks and Recreation), Mircea Monroe (Episodes), and Bryce Johnson (Pretty Little Liars) have joined the cast alongside the sole star so far, Life Unexpected‘s Shiri Appleby (pictured here), who is also producing with Alloy’s Josh Bank, Bob Levy, and Tripp Reed.

The nine-episode series — which will premiere in January — is being directed by Elizabeth Allen (90210, The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl) and is an original concept from Alloy that follows a 29-year-old woman (Appleby) who gets text messages from herself 10 years in the future that serve as warnings that she has to change her dating tactics or she’ll end up alone and unhappy. Dating Rules is Alloy’s sixth web series, and the company is currently webcasting First Day 2: First Dance and Wendy.

'Dancing with the Stars': Maks Chmerkovskiy blows up at judges, claims 'this is my show'

Does Dancing with the Stars belong to Maksim Chmerkovskiy?

That seemed to be the pro’s perspective on Monday after he and Judge Len Goodman butted heads over the quality of his rumba with Hope Solo. (It earned a mere 20 out of 30). After Goodman called it their “worst dance of the season,” Chmerkovskiy lost his cool: First he suggested that “maybe it’s time” for Goodman to leave the business after the elder judge talked about being in it for 50 years, and then the hot pro got downright indignant when Carrie Ann Inaba chided him for being disrespectful. Eli Roth will (fake) shock you in Discovery's 'How Evil Are You?' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

On the night before Halloween, there will be no ghosts or goblins skulking about in How Evil Are You? (Discovery Channel, 9 p.m.), but that doesn’t make it any less disturbing. Hosted and produced by Hostel writer-director Eli Roth, the one-hour special — which is part of the Curiosity series — examines the nature of evil as the horror movie maven submits to a brain scan that measures his physiological responses to upsetting images (and compares them with those from potentially psychotic minds). As his pièce de résistance, though, he re-stages Yale Professor Stanley Milgram’s controversial 1961 experiment. (In the Milgram experiment, subjects were ordered to give a set of increasingly powerful electric shocks to people as punishment for answering questions incorrectly. The shocks weren’t real; Milgram was simply seeking to explore subjects’ limits on obeying authority, and the results weren’t always pretty.) In this clip, you’ll see a tease of what happens when Roth decides to put a new set of subjects in the hot (electric) seat to find out if we’re “better or worse than we were 50 years ago.” Press play or WE WILL ADMINISTER 450 VOLTS ALL OVER YOU. (Just kidding. It’s not even plugged in.) READ FULL STORY »

Kelsey Grammer's 'Boss' gets decent start in ratings

Categories: Cable, TV Ratings
Boss-Kelsey-Grammer

Kelsey Grammer’s return to TV on Starz’ Boss got off to a decent start in the ratings on Friday night. The grim political thriller delivered a total of 1.7 million viewers across multiple airings its opening weekend. That’s okay for Starz, though down from Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which clocked 2.8 million viewers its first weekend, and down slightly from Torchwood: Miracle Day (2 million) and Camelot (1.6 million for Friday alone). Hmm, perhaps “semi-decent” is more apt?

Starz has already taken then fate-tempting step of renewing Boss for a second season before the first one started, a move that doesn’t always turn out well (remember Showtime’s Huff?). But if Boss can continue at this same number, or better yet grow, the decision shouldn’t keep any executives up at night.

Lifetime has ordered a new drama series pilot that could serve as a starring vehicle for Melanie Griffith.

The network has ordered the grandly titled American Housewife from Band of Brothers writer Erik Jendersen and Griffith’s husband Antonio Banderas. The Fox TV Studios project follows a housewife from an affluent family who’s constantly having a “conversation with an inner voice.”

Though the deals are not yet finalized, Griffith, Banderas and Ray Rickard are expected to be producers on the project along with Jendersen. Griffith is in talks to star. The project would mark Griffith’s first starring TV series gig since CBS’ short-lived Viva Laughlin.

A former Church of Scientology member has alleged the organization ran background checks on people it believed to be friends of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The investigations followed the 2005 screening of the South Park episode ‘Trapped in the Closet,” which lampooned both the church and, specifically, Scientology follower Tom Cruise.

Remember, remember the fifth of November.

The protesters involved in the Occupy Wall Street have had a variety of supporters champion their cause, from politically-minded musicians like Pete Seeger and Kanye West, to actors like Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon. But the grassroots uprising, which continues to gain the attention of those in Hollywood and beyond (OWS protests have popped up in cities across the United States since it began in New York City in September), may have no bigger name backing them than MTV. Charlie Rose in the morning? It may happen. This morning, CNN host Howard Kurtz posted an interesting tweet: “Charlie Rose tells me he’s talking to CBS about co-hosting Early Show, is ‘intrigued’ by taking a non-traditional approach. In Newsweek.”

So can we trust Kurtz? Seems so. Following the tweet, EW reached out to sources, who told us that Rose is indeed in talks to join The Early Show, currently anchored by Chris Wragge, Erica Hill, and Jeff Glor. Rose continues to host the self-titled interview series, Charlie Rose, which is syndicated on PBS. Could Rose make CBS mornings a little, well, rosier?

Meanwhile, the New York Post has added to the Early Show speculation by suggesting Rose’s potential partner could be Oprah’s BFF Gayle King.

'Gossip Girl' ad mocks lack of Jewish characters

Categories: Gossip Girl

“There aren’t many Jewish people on Gossip Girl …” begins a new ad for The CW’s veteran drama.

Tonight’s episode has the GG crew celebrating Yom Kippur in their own irrepressible style. Granted, the High Holiday was a couple weeks ago, but naturally the socialite crowd is fashionably late. Check out this EW first look teeing up tonight’s episode (the shofar joke is great):  READ FULL STORY »

Can Once Upon a Time give ABC’s fall a happy ending? The fantasy adventure got off to a strong start in the ratings Sunday night, opening better than expected at 8 p.m.

Once delivered 12.8 million viewers and a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating, improving a whopping 86 percent on the usual time period average of Extreme Makeover in the slot. That makes Once Upon a Time the highest-rated new drama series premiere of the season — bigger than ABC’s Revenge, CBS’ Person of Interest or Fox’s Terra Nova.

The rest of ABC’s lineup wasn’t quite as enchanted, however. READ FULL STORY »
