Golden Globe TV nominations surprises and snubs: 'Homeland,' 'Game of Thrones,' 'New Girl'

The 69th annual Golden Globe TV nominations are here, and there’s plenty to be thrilled (and annoyed) about.

Seven of the 10 nominees for best series were new shows and some EW favorites made the list. On the drama side, HBO’s Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, Showtime’s Homeland and FX’s American Horror Story all received a nod for best series. But so did … Starz’ Boss? Notice this category completely shut out the broadcast networks (HBO and Showtime led the pack of TV series nominees overall).

Best comedy series included Fox’s Glee and New Girl, along with ABC’s Modern Family. Showtime’s Episodes and HBO’s Enlightened also made the cut.

Some new names also graced the acting categories: Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Claire Danes (Homeland), Kelsey Grammer (Boss) and Mireille Enos (AMC’s The Killing) were among the nominees.

Meanwhile, several perennial award season favorites were edged out: Dexter for drama series and its star Michael C. Hall were left out, so was House‘s Hugh Laurie, The Closer‘s Kyra Sedgwick and The Office‘s Steve Carell, who wrapped his final season on the NBC comedy.

Some serious snubs: That AMC’s Breaking Bad was not nominated for best drama series this year is rather incredible (would have been nice to see The Walking Dead, ABC’s Revenge or CBS’ The Good Wife too). It’s hard to believe the Hollywood Foreign Press is watching Homeland and didn’t nominate Mandy Patinkin. Did Jim Parsons, who won for comedy actor last year on Big Bang Theory, really not deserve a nod this year? Here’s the TV list:
