Would you believe the Parents Television Council doesn’t approve of NBC’s new America’s Got Talent judge?

The parents group slammed NBC’s announcement this morning that Howard Stern is joining the hit show.

“In an act of desperation by a flailing network, NBC has hired Howard Stern – a performer who is synonymous with shock, profanity and obscenity – as a judge on a prime-time talent competition,” said PTC president Tim Winter. “Not coincidentally, in just over three weeks the network will be standing before the United States Supreme Court arguing for the right to use the F-word at any time of the day, even in front of children.

Continued Winter: “The once-proud broadcast network has lost its way and has made it clear it holds no concern whatsoever for children and families. It also risks losing millions in advertising dollars. Whatever principles NBC had in the past, when the network was successful, have clearly gone out the window.”

NBC explained in its release this morning that Stern was hired because of his “larger-than-life personality” and “truly remarkable” track record in broadcasting.

The throw-down sets the stage for a potential ongoing media battle between the PTC and the fourth-place broadcaster, which tapped Stern to replace Piers Morgan on the show. Got Talent returns this summer and will relocate to New York City to accommodate Stern’s radio schedule. NBC last tussled with the PTC over its short-lived fall drama series The Playboy Club.
