'Glee' scoop: Matthew Morrison talks tonight's Christmas episode, his directing debut, and Chewbacca

Danielle Levitt/Fox

Glee star Matthew Morrison makes his directing debut tonight with the show’s annual Christmas episode. The actor, who plays teacher Will Schuester, didn’t originally plan on helming the holiday-themed episode, but couldn’t pass up the chance when producers offered it to him. “They were actually going to give me the one before that,” says Morrison. “But then they were like, ‘No we wanna give you the big Christmas one.’ I was like, ‘Thank you.’ But then I was like, ‘Oh great. No pressure.’” EW talked to Morrison about tonight’s Glee and how exactly Chewbacca got involved.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you want to direct?
MATTHEW MORRISON:
Yeah, it’s been something I wanted to do for a while. I’ve been on Glee for three seasons. I’ve seen enough great directors and enough bad directors come through to think that I could probably be pretty average at least. I really felt like with a lot of directors that came in, I always had a voice in the show. I felt like I had really great ideas all the time, and a lot of directors take my ideas, so I thought maybe I can do this. But it was such an amazing learning experience. I’m so happy that they gave me the opportunity to do it. I went in very hyper-prepared, but you get in there and what you don’t know, you don’t know. But it was hands-on training and great learning. By the last day of shooting, I felt like I kinda knew what I was doing. READ FULL STORY »

'Fear Factor' scares up strong ratings for NBC

Fear Factor came back strong. After a six-year hiatus, the reality veteran matched NBC’s best non-sports number in the 8 p.m. hour since February 2008.

Fear Factor ran as two separate hours, the first at 8 p.m. (8.7 million viewers, 3.2 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) and second at 9 p.m. (8.5 million, 3.5). Notice ratings climbed from the first episode to the second, a good sign (here’s our Q&A with host Joe Rogan). Fear Factor beat on broadcast everything except for the high-flying CBS comedies. Fear Factor also boosted NBC’s Rock Center with Brian Williams (4 million, 1.1) rating, though that number is still dreadful. With other networks peppering their lineup with specials and repeats, NBC managed a second-place victory for the evening. READ FULL STORY »

'Community' stars share their worst audition stories, and how to help save their show

If you’re a Community fan, you probably already know that show was unceremoniously yanked from NBC’s midseason lineup. I know, I know — and they were this close to regionals! Still, the harsh realities of our bleak, Community-less existence should be peppered with hope for a better tomorrow — the grim peacock hasn’t swung the ax just yet.

Ever optimists, the members of Greendale’s hottest study group (sans Chevy Chase and Donald Glover) gathered at the SAG Foundation Actors Center in Los Angeles last Sunday to give advice and tell behind-the-scenes tales to fellow actors, discussing everything from lame inside jokes (“We run around saying ‘kern kern’. No one knows what we’re talking about. The origin story of that was Chevy couldn’t say kettle corn.” — Joel McHale) to the unlikely beginnings of Troy and Abed (“Originally, [showrunner] Dan Harmon thought it would be a Troy and Pierce Beavis and Butthead thing.” — Gillian Jacobs).

And while the biggest shock of the night came when Danny Pudi admitted that he had never seen Cougar Town before shooting Critical Film Studies, the cast did manage to squeeze in some truly horrifying before-they-were-famous audition stories, as well as some foolproof tips on how to keep the struggling show alive. Is Rosewood ready to finally discover who “A” is on Pretty Little Liars? Apparently so! EW has learned exclusively that the ABC Family series will reveal the elusive troublemaker’s identity in the coming season’s finale, which will air on March 19.

Die-hard fans don’t need to be reminded, but the identity of “A” has been the central mystery of the show since it launched in June 2010. “A” has been threatening to reveal the secrets of the four Pretty Little Liars (Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, and Ashley Benson), mostly via text messages, since their pal Alison (Sasha Pieterse) was murdered in the series premiere. At this point, viewers and fans don’t even know whether “A” is a he or a she. READ FULL STORY »

Fear Factor returns to NBC tonight after one of the longest hiatuses in TV history. Below, host Joe Rogan takes our questions:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you first hear about Fear Factor coming back and what was your reaction?
JOE ROGAN: They have been trying to bring it back for awhile now. [Executive producer] Matt Kunitz emailed me several times over the past several years saying they were trying to do a special, and that never came to fruition. Then he contacted me and said they were bringing it back. It just seemed really odd. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a show going away and then coming back after six years with the same host. I got to go right back to the old work environment and hang out with my friends.

You’ve mocked the show in your stand-up routines. Did producers ever have a problem with that? READ FULL STORY »

Things, of course, are not exactly as they seem. Priestley and Finnigan’s characters are actually con artists on a Bonnie-and-Clyde run from the law, he says. “[They] pull scams on people and take them for everything that they can and then move on to the next town.” Watch a clip from the episode below, which also features guest star Tony Hale. The battle for first place in the NFC gave NBC a huge win on Thursday: The showdown between the Giants and the Cowboys earned a 6.9 rating/17 share in the key demographic and 18.6 million viewers, according to early estimates.

CBS — buoyed by its own Raiders-Packers game earlier in the day — came in second in the demo (3.2/8), with the combination of 60 Minutes and The Amazing Race finale from 8:30 to 9:30 earning a 3.2/8. In fact, the NFL overrun pushed everything back for the night, so the rest of Race encroached in the 9 p.m. hour, so it combined with The Good Wife earned a 2.4/5, while Wife with CSI: Miami posted a 2.0/5.
