'Grimm' outshines 'Prime Suspect' in Thursday ratings

Categories: Grimm, TV Ratings

NBC gave Grimm a shot on Thursday night and here’s how that went: On one hand, Grimm (4.1 million viewers, 1.6 adults 18-49 rating) delivered about the same rating it does on Fridays. So that’s not great. On the other hand, Grimm did way better than Prime Suspect, giving NBC its best number at 10 p.m. on Thursdays in 11 weeks. Low expectations theater!

Meanwhile, with ABC airing specials instead of Grey’s/Private, both Person of Interest (12.7 million, 3.0) and The Mentalist (13.4 million, 3.0) jumped dramatically from their last airings. This would be a season high for The Mentalist, and best-since-premiere for POI, except some NFL coverage on the CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh might be inflating these early numbers.  READ FULL STORY »

‘THE MENTALIST’: RED JOHN MYSTERY WILL ‘RAMP UP’

The Red John story line has taken so many twists and turns since last season’s epic finale that that story line has largely taken a backseat to other fun capers. But that won’t be the case all season. In fact, Daniel Cerone, executive producer and writer of next week’s “Fugue in Red,” tells me this week’s episode, which will find Jane reverting to his con-man ways after an accident, will “reframe who Red John is in the life of our character” and ultimately set the stage for a second half of the season that will see more action from this fan-favorite story line. NBC is now checking the songs the Roots play on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon after the band performed an off-color song during Michele Bachmann’s show appearance last month.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots says now he’s “gotta clear a lot of the song choices” with the network.

“It’s still a comedy show, so they promise not to step on my toes or that type of thing, but they definitely want to know the title of the song, the subject matter of the song, can it be seen as an insult?” he said in an interview Thursday. READ FULL STORY »

Barbara Walters praised for interview with Syria's Assad

Categories: Television

Barbara Walters’ interview with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his first American television interview, proves that at 82, her name still carries major weight outside The View. ”I can’t tell you why he requested me,” Walters told the Associated Press. “I can only tell you that I have met him twice before.” According to the AP, Walters had an off-the-record meeting with Assad and his wife, who’d reached out to Walters, in the Middle East several years ago. Three years ago, she went to Syria expecting an interview, but it didn’t happen. After they finally spoke on camera, he was satisfied with the results, even if, as Walters pointed out, there’s a disconnect between what we hear and see is happening in Syria — the UN estimates 4,000 protestors have been killed — and what Assad says is happening. “He was very happy with the interview,” she says. “He likes the confrontation. He likes the tough questions. When it was over, he smiled and thanked me and he was happy. I don’t know if it did him any good.” Read the transcript here. Watch video of the ABC News exclusive, and Walters’ tough, persistent questioning on the killings, here.

While Walters was not afraid of Assad, she admitted the trip itself made her nervous. The U.S. government had suggested she not leave her hotel room, and the last leg of her flight was delayed because the Jordanian airline she was flying didn’t want its pilot to stay overnight in Syria, she said. 'America's Funniest Home Videos' Christmas special: Watch grandpa bite it while decorating! -- FIRST LOOK

Just because he sees you when you’re sleeping and knows when you’re awake doesn’t mean that Santa is the most coordinated dude in the world. Far from it, in fact. America’s Funniest Home Videos will celebrate this rarely seen side of St. Nick alongside other holiday-themed indignities with a Christmas special (ABC, 9 p.m.) that offers up an hour of problematic presents, mantle mishaps, and doomed decorating scenes. If you’re one of those impatient kids who can’t wait until tonight to unwrap your video gifts, sneak a peek at the special’s “We Wish You the Merriest” music montage in which all sorts of folks wind up holidazed and confused. (Prepare to meet a little boy who encounters a financial windfall and downfall in the span of a few seconds.)
For two bonus stocking stuffers, enjoy these clips of a Batman-obsessed kid on Santa’s lap and a kid upstaging his sister’s performance of “Twas The Night Before Christmas.” READ FULL STORY »

'Coma' miniseries lands all-star cast

Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Burstyn, James Woods, Geena Davis, Lauren Ambrose, and Steven Pasquale (Rescue Me) will star in Coma, a four-hour miniseries based on the Robin Cook novel that will air on A&E.

Directed by Mikail Salomon (Band of Brothers) and produced by Tony and Ridley Scott, Coma is a thriller “about a doctor who discovers that something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table.”

John J. McLaughlin (Black Swan) is writing the script, and the two-night event from Sony Pictures Television is scheduled to premiere Memorial Day 2012.
