Tonight brings the end of Sons of Anarchy‘s wild fourth season (FX, 10 p.m. ET), and there’s at least one person who’s happy to see Clay in a hospital bed: Ron Perlman. “It’s the first time I actually felt rested the whole season,” Perlman jokes to EW. “You think it’s easy putting contracts out on all those people? That’s very stressful. And you know, a man my age, in my condition, it’s more excitement than I could ever need.”  READ FULL STORY »

Republicans vs. Democrats TV: Lefties want comedy, right wingers like work -- EXCLUSIVE

Republicans don’t watch MTV’s Jersey Shore. But they dig ABC’s Castle.

Democrats don’t like Discovery’s Deadliest Catch. But they swoon for NBC’s Parks and Recreation.

Those are a few of the findings from an annual research survey by Experian-Simmons that measures the consumer preferences of various political ideologies. In a report prepared exclusively for EW, the company calculated some of the favorite — and least favorite — TV shows of political partisans. (Specifically: the report measures which shows among the survey group were watched by the highest concentration of self-identified “Liberal Democrats” and “Conservative Republicans.”)

In the findings, “sarcastic” media-savvy comedies and morally murky antiheroes tend to draw Dems. While serious work-centered shows (both reality shows and stylized scripted procedurals), along with reality competitions, tend to draw conservatives.

Focusing on well-known cable and broadcast original entertainment series (rather than, say, sports, music, news, repeats), here’s who wins the 2011 prime-time primaries:

Toby Jones, who is no stranger to playing iconic artists (see: his underrated turn as Truman Capote in Infamous) will now step into the famous silhouette of Alfred Hitchcock. According to a release from the BBC, the actor will play the legendary director alongside Sienna Miller (pictured) for the upcoming BBC 2 drama The Girl.

The film will chronicle Hitchcock’s “obsessive relationship” with his blond muse, actress Tippi Hedren (Miller), which writer Gwyneth Hughes researched by chronicling Hedren herself, as well as surviving members of the director’s crew. After casting the unknown Hedren in his classic The Birds, Hitchcock’s determination, and ultimate failure, to be with Hedren turned out to be a story as fascinating as the plots of one of his movies. Castiel lives!

After being assumed dead since the beginning of this season, fan-favorite Misha Collins is slated to return to Supernatural in the new year, Warner Brothers tells EW. He will appear in episode 17 of this season and at least two additional episodes.

The studio and the network, CW, declined to provide more information about his return, but regardless, the news should please fans, who have been vocal about their desire to get the angel back on screen.

Shortly after the premiere, executive producer Sera Gamble told EW the actor’s return was imminent,  though, at the time, she had no specific plans. “We all love Misha [Collins], and we plan to write material for him,” she said. “But in terms of where we are in the story right now, it’s a lot about Sam and Dean and Bobby losing this person that was incredibly important to them.”

New Girl is getting some new blood, courtesy of True Blood. The HBO series’ Ryan Kwanten is set to guest star on the Valentine’s Day episode of the Zooey Deschanel-fronted Fox sitcom, EW confirms. Deschanel’s single-and-ready-to-mingle Jess, in hopes of a one-night stand, meets his attractive character in a bar. Unfortunately, she discovers they have nothing in common.

So, looks as though Kwanten won’t be Jess’ new man. But we’ll have to tune in to see if her Valentine’s Day still sucks. (Sorry, any True Blood-related post pretty much demands at least one vampire pun, right?) [E! Online]

Ratings for CBS’ daytime show The Talk may not look great, but the network insists they don’t tell the whole story. Though the show is averaging about 500,000 less viewers than what As The World Turns did in its final year (2.0 million versus 2.5 million), the show costs nearly 40 percent less to produce and is already considered profitable. And now that comics Aisha Tyler and Sheryl Underwood have joined the panel (replacing Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete), the show is finally finding its voice.

In their first interview together, the women of The Talk sat down with EW to chat about the show’s one-year anniversary and the addition of the two comediennes. “The fact that we got a second season is huge for us,” said host Julie Chen. “It felt like a reboot for sure when Sheryl and Aisha came in. Even if you just change out one person, one person can drastically change the chemistry and the dynamics at the table.” READ FULL STORY »

Why go fishing for crabs when you can catch gold?

Discovery has ordered a new series from Emmy-winning producer Thom Beers that manages to combine elements of the network’s two biggest hits: Deadliest Catch and Gold Rush Alaska. Introducing Bering Sea Gold, an eight-part series that follows a set of eccentric characters who take to the frigid open water in custom-built (and, often, barely seaworthy) rigs to dive for gold.

The four vessels, which range from an 80-foot barge to a ramshackle raft, take to the open water. The desperate crews, including the only female gold “dredger” in Nome (right), spend hours on the rocky ocean floor hunting for flecks of gold.

Beers will narrate the show, produced by Discovery and Original Productions, which will premiere Friday, Jan. 27 at 10 p.m. Here’s the show’s intro. Clearly if you’re fan of Deadliest Catch or Gold Rush, this is right up your alley: READ FULL STORY »

Sara Rue developing comedy with the CW

Categories: Television

Shedding for the Wedding might have been a bust, but the CW is putting their weight behind Sara Rue once again, but this time in the realm of scripted TV.

The network confirms to EW that the former Less Than Perfect star is developing multi-camera comedy with the CW, in which Rue will star as Lucy, a young woman who decides to marry her female best friend in order to circumvent her co-ops rules against roommates. Rue will also co-executive produce the project alongside Alan David, her longtime manager. Whether we see Rue’s comedy on the small screen will remain to be seen — the project, which is only in its script stage, is still in very early stages of development.

Rue, who currently appears on CBS’s Rules of Engagement, last worked with the net last season as host for Shedding for the Wedding, a reality weight loss show that completed its eight-episode first season in April before not being picked up for a second season. [Via THR]
