Was everyone watching football or at the movies catching another showing of Breaking Dawn? Dramas like Pan Am and The Good Wife hit some depressing lows on Sunday, which was dominated by football and the animated shows on Fox.

NBC won the night in the key demo (5.2 rating/13 share) and viewers (13.7 million), as the game between two probable NFC playoff times (Detroit and New Orleans) earned a 6.5/15, according to early results. Fox came in a close second (5.1/12), with The Simpsons earning a 4.0/10, followed by Allen Gregory (2.4/6), Family Guy (3.5/8), and The Cleveland Show (2.5/6).

ABC came in a distant third (2.2/5), with all of its shows hitting troubling lows. America’s Funniest Home Videos was down 22 percent to a 1.4/4, followed by Once Upon a Time (down 9 percent to a 3.1/7), Desperate Housewives (down 13 percent to a 2.6/6), and Pan Am (down 11 percent to a 1.6/4). We already know that the period drama is one step away from flat-out cancellation: The ABC drama’s co-star Karine Vanasse sent a tweet that heavily suggested the show was finished: “Well, we received THE call, #PanAm is only coming back for one more episode after Christmas. But up to the end, we’ll give it our all!”

CBS finished fourth with a 2.1/5, with 60 Minutes down 51 percent to a 1.8/5, followed by The Amazing Race (down 7 percent to a 2.7/6), The Good Wife (flat with a 1.9/4), and CSI: Miami (up 16 percent with a 2.2/5).

Guess who’s also returning to Grey’s Anatomy for a special appearance?

Kate Burton, who played Meredith’s Alzheimer’s-stricken mom, Ellis, in earlier seasons, will reprise her role for a special dreamscape episode that imagines all the ways her daughter’s life would be different if she was alive and well. And if the acclaimed surgeon mother is still in the game, what does that mean for her relationship with Chief Webber? Hmm…

Burton will join Private Practice’s Kate Walsh, who revealed via Twitter last week that she will return to Grey’s as well. In the dream, Meredith wonders what would have happened had the redheaded beauty stayed with Derek.

Talk about a brutal competition: Reports have surfaced claiming the two female judges on The X Factor have received death threats in the wake of Drew Ryniewicz’s ouster on Thursday.

Angry fans apparently used Twitter to express their rage over the teen’s elimination, posting expletive-fueled comments about Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger. Mentored by Simon Cowell, Ryniewicz was forced to sing for her life opposite Marcus Canty on Thursday, but ended up delivering a heartbreakingly poor performance of Roxette’s “Listen to Your Heart.” She became the second contestant to leave Fox’s freshman competition show. 'Happy Endings': Casey Wilson on the Penny-pony scene you didn't get to see

Happy-Endings-Lies

Happy Endings isn’t afraid to embrace the weird and/or the wacky (see: the Halloween episode, any other minute of the show). But a scene that was shot for the season premiere apparently went a few steps too far into Bizarroville, as Casey Wilson played current-day Penny as well as a geriatric version of Penny and — well, maybe it’s for the best if you hear it from her:

“It was a real look into my future,” she told EW. READ FULL STORY »

Just in time for February sweeps, Grey’s Anatomy will travel to a parallel universe in which Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Addison (Kate Walsh) never broke up.

The “What If?” episode takes off after Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) wonders what would have been different in her life if her mother (Kate Burton) had never been afflicted with Alzheimer’s. With that kind of game changing detail, you can imagine other Grey’s favorites may be making their way back to Seattle Grace, although Walsh will be the only former member of the main cast to reappear.

After being mocked in the press, CBS is changing two midseason show titles.

The ABC executive who played a key role in canceling All My Children and One Life to Live is leaving the network. The departure of Brian Frons, who will leave in January, comes at a time when ABC has decided to merge its daytime and syndicated units into one division called Time Square Studio.

ABC exec Vicki Dummer, who oversees current series and specials for the net, will head the new division encompassing The View, General Hospital, The Chew, The Revolution, Katie, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Frons has served as the daytime’s head since 2002 and his contract ends in January. The network says it was his decision to leave. “Brian Frons has been the driving force in our successful Daytime division since joining us in 2002, and while we understand his decision to leave at the end of his contract, we’re sad to see him go,” said Anne Sweeney, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, in a statement. “We took this opportunity to rethink our business, and the result was the creation of Times Square Studios.” READ FULL STORY »

Neil Patrick Harris apologizes for 'tranny' remark

Neil Patrick Harris apologized today for using the word “tranny” during a segment of Thursday’s Live With Kelly. “Truly sorry for saying the word ‘tranny’ on Live this week. Twice!” tweeted Harris. “Should have been more thoughtful. Didn’t at all mean to offend.”

Guest-host Harris and Ripa had inhaled some sulfur hexafluoride, “helium’s evil twin,” during a science experiment that made their voices lower. Recognizing that he sounded very similar to Buffalo Bill, the killer from Silence of the Lambs, Harris drew laughs when he said, “Put the lotion in the basket.”

When the gas expired, Harris said, “I’ve never sounded more like a tranny in my life.”

Fall TV winners and losers 2011

Categories:
fall-tv-winners-and-losers_320.jpg

Think back: Just three months ago, Fox’s mega-budget Terra Nova was considered the most formidable new drama, ABC’s Once Upon a Time seemed like it had an enchanted apple’s chance in hell of becoming a hit, and many thought Two and a Half Men might not survive without Charlie Sheen. How fast fortunes have changed (or, in the case of NBC, remained the same). Here are EW’s fall TV winners and losers:

WINNER: Smart, funny women / good girls gone bad. They may be broke, desperate or — worst of all — trapped in the suburbs, but the ladies of CBS’ 2 Broke Girls, Fox’s New Girl, and ABC’s Suburgatory have three of the highest-rated new shows — and all were created or co-created by female writers. Meanwhile, the mercenary heroines on breakout dramas like ABC’s Revenge and Showtime’s Homeland have kept us on our best behavior.

WINNER: Chuck Lorre AND Charlie Sheen: Two and a Half Men co-creator Chuck Lorre proved he can boost a hit comedy’s ratings by 41 percent — despite Ashton Kutcher not being all that funny. Meanwhile, former Men star Sheen convinced FX to buy 10 episodes of a sitcom based on the movie Anger Management — which critics didn’t think was very funny either. It’s like a bitter divorce where both spouses got to keep the boat. READ FULL STORY »
