Categories: Alcatraz, Television

Gray, stony, cold, isolated, lonely, formidable — pretty much exactly the sort of thoughts that the word “Alcatraz” is supposed to inspire.

Here’s a first look at Fox’s handsome official key art for J.J. Abrams’ new mystery drama Alcatraz, which premieres on Monday, Jan. 16 and stars Sarah Jones, Jorge Garcia, and Sam Neill. (Fox released its full midseason schedule yesterday here). See the art, below (you can almost hear the fog horn), and afterward check out the show’s teaser trailer: READ FULL STORY »

Chelsea Handler can't boost 'Whitney' ratings

A guest visit from upcoming NBC sitcom figurehead Chelsea Handler couldn’t pull Whitney from its ratings murk.

Handler guest-starred last night on the freshman sitcom, playing a therapist who tries to help stressed-out Whitney. The comedy matched its all-time low in the Nielsens, delivering 4 million viewers and a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49. Handler’s new semi-autobiographical NBC series Are You There, Chelsea?, starring Laura Prepon as the fictional version of Handler, launches on Wednesday nights starting Jan. 11. (And to add another level of NBC cross-program playfulness, the Whitney episode’s title was “Up All Night.”)

In case you’ve missed it, here’s NBC’s four-minute preview of Are You There, Chelsea?, followed by more Thursday night ratings: READ FULL STORY »

Will-i-am

Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am will join Jessie J as two of the four coaches on next spring’s The Voice UK. The seven-time Grammy winner told BBC1, which will air the music competition, “I’m proud to be doing The Voice UK because the UK was the first place I saw success. It’s the place I’m the most creative outside of home.”

BBC1 controller Danny Cohen says: “I am thrilled that will.i.am has signed up to be a Coach on The Voice. He is a huge star who will bring a unique creativity to the show.”

Hey there, people. It’s that time of the week again.

Hope you enjoy this week’s spoils and join me in pre-mourning the inevitable hiatus that is headed our way (if not, already in progress). Why must the TV world put a damper on my holidays with such a dark time? I mean, what am I supposed to do with my evenings now? Talk to people?!? Sleep? Well, sleep does sound good. But the former just sounds exhausting and frustrating. Am I alone in scrooging?

Regardless, I hope this puts you in a slightly better mood if you are in the dumps about hiatus time. We’ll ride it out together! (Um, except when I go on vacation…) Anyhoo, make sure you’re sending me your spoiler questions, thoughts, and general suggestions to spoilerroom@ew.com and following me on Twitter @EWSandraG for the latest goings-on in TV land (and, sometimes, pictures of pretty people on red carpets). Speaking of pretty people, if you’re a fan of Pretty Little Liars or Burn Notice, you’ll want to read the column very carefully today. (There’s some news about what I’ll be up to in the next week that you might find interesting.) READ FULL STORY »

When Showtime recently renewed Dexter for two more seasons, fans wondered: Is this the beginning of the end for the acclaimed serial killer drama?

Though plans could still change, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins tells EW the working assumption is indeed that Dexter will conclude in the eighth season. Moreover, the creative endgame starts sooner than you think — the remaining episodes of the current sixth season will set into motion events that will resonate through the remainder of the series.

“Coming back for two more years gives us clarity about how and when it will go out,” Nevins said at Showtime’s annual holiday party in Los Angeles on Thursday night. “There’s things that are going to happen [this season] that will set up a very clear endgame that will take two seasons to tell. You have got to be there for the last two episodes.” READ FULL STORY »

Roger Ebert's 'At the Movies' show to go on hiatus

ebert-presents-at-the-movies

The film criticism show Ebert Presents: At the Movies will go on hiatus at the end of December, according to a blog post published Wednesday by Roger Ebert. The public TV program was produced and nearly entirely financed by the Chicago Sun-Times film critic and his wife, Chaz Ebert, and was intended to be a continuation of the various review shows hosted by Ebert and the late Gene Siskel, such as Sneak Previews, At the Movies, and Siskel & Ebert. But the Eberts said they can no longer afford to foot the bill and are now searching for new sponsors.

“We’ve spoken to the top executives of several channels and film distributors, charitable foundations, web delivery services, potential corporate sponsors, and crowd-funding sources,” said Ebert in his post. “We are still talking with them, but the time crunch has intervened. It is a complicated process, and so we are going on hiatus while we sort it out.”

Ebert Presents: At the Movies is hosted by critics Christy Lemire of the Associated Press and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of Mubi.com. By the end of the year, the show will have aired 50 episodes.

'Glee' scoop: Chord Overstreet teases Sam's return to McKinley

Fox

Gleeks were shocked last summer when Chord Overstreet, who plays jock Sam, declined an offer to return to Glee as a recurring character in season 3 and instead chose to to focus on his other passion: music. “I wanted to do a bunch of recording and take time to do that,” the 22-year-old says. But now Overstreet and Glee producers are ready to reintroduce Sam into the halls of McKinley High, where he’ll reappear on the Dec. 6 episode (and recur throughout the rest of season 3). “Luckily, everything kind of opened back up [in my schedule] so I could jump back in,” the actor says.

Sam’s back to boost New Directions, who are sorely lacking members thanks to splinter glee club the Troubletones. Explains Overstreet: READ FULL STORY »
