Alloy Entertainment’s Dating Rules from My Future Self debuts in less than a week — next Monday, Jan. 9, in fact — but today, EW has the exclusive trailer from the web series that stars Life Unexpected‘s Shiri Appleby as the newly single 29-year-old Lucy who gets text messages from herself 10 years in the future. The notes serve as warnings that she has to change her dating tactics quickly or she’ll end up alone and unhappy. Alloy is the company behind such buzzy series as Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and Vampire Diaries.
Lucy sums up the series’ premise early in the preview. “What if you could create an app where you could give advice to your past self?” she asks. “You know, like, text me later?” The trailer — which you can find here after the jump — definitely has a New Girl vibe to it, with Appleby’s Lucy evoking stripes of Zooey Deschanel’s geeky, gawky, pratfall-prone vibe in the popular Fox sitcom that debuted last fall. (Those horn-rimmed glasses help the cause, too.) One of Lucy’s friends even sums up how trendy it is to be of the Appleby or Deschanel variety these days: “Guys love geek girls,” her pal tells her.
