The night belonged to cable.
While it’s not uncommon for cable to walk away with arms full of Globes, the major broadcast networks were almost completely snubbed Sunday night in favor of cable offerings like Showtime’s Homeland, which picked up the award for best TV drama and best drama series actress (Claire Danes) at the 69th Annual Golden Globes. Matt LeBlanc also picked up an award for best comedy actor for his work on Episodes, another Showtime offering.
The sole show from one of the big four to walk away with an award was ABC’s Modern Family, which won the last TV statue of the night for best comedy, beating out Episodes, Glee, New Girl, and Enlightened. (The last cable network to win that award was HBO, which won in 2007 for Extras.)
Last year, the major networks won four Golden Globes in 11 television categories, three of which went to Glee and the other to the Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons.
Homeland was the odds-on favorite to win the drama category and wasn’t the only heavily favored nominee to claim a TV prize this evening: Kate Winslet won best actress in a movie or miniseries for HBO’s Mildred Pierce, PBS’ Downton Abbey won for best movie or mini, and Peter Dinklage won best supporting actor for HBO’s Game of Thrones. (So who is Martin Henderson, the man Dinklage asked viewers to Google? It’s apparently this victim of a pub “dwarf-tossing” attack.)
Somewhat less expected were wins by a few other first-year shows: Laura Dern won for best comedy TV actress in HBO’s Enlightened, Jessica Lange for best supporting actress in FX’s American Horror Story, and Kelsey Grammer won best drama TV actor in Starz’ grim Boss.
