David Cronenberg is set to direct and serve as executive producer on a new TV series, Knifeman. The show will be the first television project for Cronenberg, who’s directed A Dangerous Method, History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and The Fly, as well as the upcoming Cosmopolis (starring Robert Pattinson and Paul Giamatti).

The TV series, based on the novel by Wendy Moore, centers on an eccentric surgeon who engages in far-reaching methods in order to learn more about the human body. A rep for Media Rights Capital — the company producing the series — has confirmed that the project has not yet been sold; rather the current focus is on casting the pilot with the process starting over the next couple of months. A rep for Cronenberg could not be reached for comment.

The series is written by Emmy nominated writer and producer Rolin Jones (Friday Night Lights, Weeds, Smash) with the story by Jones and Ron Fitzgerald (also of Friday Night Lights).
