Two and a Half Men co-creator Lee Aronsohn issued an apology via Twitter today for saying “we’re approaching peak vagina on television, the point of labia saturation” when describing this season’s female-driven comedies in a Hollywood trade.

“Yes, yes, it was a stupid joke,” tweeted Aronsohn, who was also quoted as saying “enough, ladies. I get it. You have periods” in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at this weekend’s Toronto Screenwriting Conference. His comments drew an angry response from women like Raising Hope star Martha Plimpton, who asked Aronsohn via Twitter if he was “f#*king kidding.” Former New Yorker TV critic Nancy Franklin also encouraged readers to tweet Aronsohn at @bennyace, “if your overexposed lady parts want to send him a message.”

There was an earlier post from Aronsohn that wasn’t quite so apologetic, according to The New York Times:

On his own Twitter account, Mr. Aronsohn responded to the criticism, writing: “Women, please look up ‘irony.’” Mr. Aronsohn said that he has “made a career out of” jokes about the male anatomy even as he was “complaining about vaginas.”

“See what I did there?” he wrote.

These tweets no longer appear on Aronsohn’s feed.

In other less controversial comments from Aronsohn, the producer indicated to THR that star Ashton Kutcher wants to return for another season. Kutcher’s deal is up in May. “It’s just a basic negotiation between CBS and the actors because CBS is picking up the tab. (CBS and Warner Bros. are) trying to make a deal that will allow the show to remain profitable, to remain on the air.”
