The network has ordered a shortened 13-episode fourth season of the comedy. Still unclear if creator Dan Harmon is returning, or for that matter costar Chevy Chase.
Tweeted star Joel McHale: “Dear #Community fans, You are the best people in the world. We’re renewed for 13 eps. Couldn’t have done it without you.”
Community has averaged a modest 4 million viewers and a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 kick starting NBC’s Thursday nights this season.
Earlier NBC picked up 30 Rock for a 13-episode final season order, and renewed Parenthood.
Pickups of Parks & Recreation and The Office are expected too, possibly even today, but we’re still waiting to hear on those. Up All Night has a shot, as well.
One question is whether the lower-rated returning comedies will remain on Thursday nights — where networks traditionally put their strongest shows. In trying to maintain its Must See TV-era two-hour comedy block on Thursdays, NBC has kept some pretty soft titles in the mix (instead of using, say, The Voice).
