NBC orders singing competition from 'Voice' producer, 'Sing Off' cancelled

Yup, another one! NBC has ordered a new singing competition series from a producer of The Voice.

The network just greenlit The Winner Is, a reality show where singers of all ages and styles compete in head-to-head duels. Adults, kids, teens, seniors, families and professional singers will be judged by an in-studio panel (which hasn’t been cast yet) for a $1 million dollar prize.

In a Deal or No Deal-style twist, the contestants will have the option to quit the game early. In other words, before hearing whether they’re eliminated, singers on the chopping block can choose to exit the game in exchange for a cash payout, or gamble on continuing in the game. The show is from Voice producer John de Mol.

“We are thrilled to be working with John de Mol, the creator and one of the producers of The Voice, on this original singing game show that will feature a broad range of talent, dueling performers and the surprise of in-the-moment negotiations and decisions,” said NBC alternative entertainment chief Paul Telegdy. “Talented singers and the show’s surprising competitive twist, with the possibility of negotiating a deal to step out of the game, will have viewers engaged and entertained.”

There’s no premiere date yet set for the competition. Though with NBC airing The Voice in the fall and spring next season, and America’s Got Talent dominating the summer, the network doesn’t have a surplus of real estate for singing shows.

UPDATE: Yes, The Sing Off is cancelled.
