In a new graphic novel out today, Burn Notice fans will finally learn the story behind how spy-lovers Michael (Jeffrey Donovan) and Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) came to be, and EW has your first look.
“It’s something we’ve wanted to tell, and we’ve been asked for,” creator Matt Nix says of Burn Notice: First Contact, the third graphic novel volume that the show has done in collaboration with DC Entertainment. “Last time we did a comic book, we were able to fill in a big piece of the mythology and fill in the time between seasons. And this time, we’re able to tell a story we wanted to tell that for a lot of practical reasons we’d have a hard time telling otherwise.” (Specifically, he jokes, “getting an entire cast of people to play Irish people circa 1999, is not something we’d logistically be able to do for an episode.”)
Above all, he says, it was time to blow the lid off this story ahead of a season that will largely test Michael and Fiona’s relationship. At the end of last season, Fiona turned herself in to authorities in order to help Michael, and she will spend several episodes this season behind bars. “You might think that because Michael and Fiona are separated this season, their relationship issues and who they are to each other would actually be less important, but it’s quite the opposite. It really brings their relationship into sharp relief,” he says. “[And] some of the stuff that is referenced in the comic book, we had discussed already because it was coming out in episodes this season.”
The sixth season of Burn Notice begins tonight on USA.
