'Mockingbird Lane' ratings help 'Grimm'

NBC aired its Mockingbird Lane pilot Friday night as a Halloween special.

How’d it do? The ambitious Munsters reboot was seen by 5.4 million viewers and delivered a 1.5 rating in the adult demo. That easily beat Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares premiere (2.7 million, 0.9), which returned down a sharp 44 percent from last year, but it couldn’t top ABC’s usual 8 p.m. victor, Shark Tank (6.8 million, 1.8).

Mockingbird did firmly boost NBC’s Grimm (6 million, 1.9), however, which jumped 27 percent at 9 p.m. This is the second-highest rated episode of Grimm ever.

The big question is whether Mockingbird numbers are big enough for NBC to give the expensive project a series order. This performance doesn’t lend itself to an obvious answer. On one hand, if NBC had a guarantee that Mockingbird would deliver this same number every week, it would pull the trigger. Second place at 8 p.m. and boosting Grimm? Done. But premieres normally outperform regular episodes, and this received a fair amount of promotion — plus was well-timed airing right before Halloween. So … hmm. In case you missed it, here’s Ken Tucker’s review.

Also last night: CBS had CSI:NY (10.8 million, 1.4), up 17 percent, and Blue Bloods (10.8 million, 1.4), up 18 percent. Fox had Fringe (2.6 million, 0.9), down a notch.

The CW’s Nikita (793,000, 0.2) proved that lower ratings were indeed possible.
