Sandy shuts down TV production in New York

Production on New York-based shows like Elementary and Gossip Girl have been halted today because of the storm moving through the east coast today. Several primetime dramas will stay dark today and likely through Wednesday because of what Good Morning America has dubbed the “Halloween Superstorm.”

Affected shows include The Good Wife, Person of Interest, 30 Rock, Nurse Jackie, Smash, Special Victims Unit, Celebrity Apprentice, 666 Park Avenue, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.

For now, it’s hard to predict how the weather will affect TV ratings over the next few days.  The networks are already expecting that some metered market averages will be missing for a few days, while fast-affiliate ratings will remain in flux because of local cutaways for weather coverage. Even Nielsen outlets could face some downtime because of the storm. How this affects the national sample, remains to be seen. (Though outages or delays on the east coast will give the nets a good excuse when or if their series show unexpected drops).

Should ratings remain unaffected, the bad weather could actually boost ratings since all those east-coast shut -ins will turn to the boob tube to wile away the hours. Obviously, the networks are hoping viewers will choose a broadcast comedy or drama rather than weather coverage on DirecTV, which has created a dedicated channel for round-the-clock information about the hurricane.
