Those reports were right: CNN announced today that ex-NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker has been named president of its 23 news and information businesses, including CNN in its various incarnations and HLN. (CNN, like Entertainment Weekly, is owned by Time Warner.)

Zucker is currently serving as executive producer of Katie Couric’s new talk show. Previously, he spent 25 years at NBC, starting as a researcher for NBC Sports and eventually working his way up to NBC Universal’s top job. He left the peacock when its takeover by Comcast was completed last year.

“I am thrilled to join the distinguished team of journalists across the worldwide platforms of CNN,” Zucker said in a statement.  “The global reach and scale of the CNN brand is unparalleled in all of news.  Outside of my family and the Miami Dolphins, there is nothing I am as passionate about as journalism.  I spent the most rewarding years of my career as a journalist, and it’s where I look forward to spending many more.  I am grateful to Phil Kent for this opportunity, and I’m excited to return to daily newsgathering and compelling storytelling in a place that values those above all else.”

Added Katie Couric in a statement of her own: “I’m very excited that Jeff has such a wonderful opportunity at CNN and equally excited for CNN. I’m also grateful that Jeff has been so instrumental in getting our show off to such a strong start and look forward to working with the fantastic staff we’ve assembled and building on the strong foundation we’ve created.”
