'Dexter': Moonves says season 8 is last

Here is another big piece of evidence that the upcoming eighth season will be the last outing for Dexter.

While on a conference call Monday, CBS Corp. president and CEO Les Moonves referred to the new season of the serial killer thriller as the “last” one for the show, Broadcast & Cable first reported. During a question-and-answer session at Deutsche Bank’s 2013 dbAccess Media, Internet & Telecom Conference in Palm Beach., the moderator made a reference to Dexter “going off the air” while asking the executive what’s coming down Showtime’s creative pipeline. Moonves can be heard on the conference call audio playback replying, “We have Ray Donovan coming on, with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with Dexter‘s last season starting in June…”

Showtime is a subsidiary of CBS Corp, so Moonves is certainly in a position to know the show’s fate.

It’s pretty rare that fans actively plead for a series to end, but that’s been the mood among Dexter viewers this past year. Though they’ve long enjoyed the show — and still do — most feel the story has run its course and want the show to go out on a strong note. Showtime has been hinting this could be the end for Dex and Deb for a while, but recent record-breaking ratings made some wonder if the network might try to squeeze a bit more life out of the series.

The eighth season gets underway June 30. Showtime had no comment (it’s Les Moonves — what are they gonna say?).
