It was an all-girls club this week on American Idol, following last week’s elimination of last boy standing Lazaro Arbos. But on Thursday’s results show, the Fierce Five shrunk to a Fab Four. The fallen idol spoke to EW.
Janelle Arthur was sent home.
Arthur didn’t appear too dismayed about her elimination during the taping, and she was still all smiles when talking with press after the show.
“I thought they were going to use the save, just not on me,” Arthur said. She also shared what she told fellow contestant Candice Glover before they walked onstage at the beginning of Thursday’s taping: “This is the deal: I’m going home. They’re not gonna save me, but I love you.”
Arthur selected her own arrangement of the Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hanging On” for her “save me” song. Throughout that last attempt to stay on the show, the judges were deep in conversation, with Keith Urban’s chair swiveled over behind Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey. But the judges’ intense deliberating didn’t faze Arthur.
“I kind of just felt like I was singing to America. I just wasn’t paying attention [to the judges]. I knew they were talking,” Arthur said. “I was just trying mainly to get through the song, just knowing that it was my last time singing on the stage.”
Arthur also explained why she chose Dolly Parton’s “Dumb Blonde” for her second song on Wednesday’s episode. Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine had declared the spunky country number the “wrong song” for Arthur, but the 23-year-old Tennessee native brushed aside criticism of her decision to go with a lesser-known Parton tune.
“They were saying it was such an obscure Dolly song, but I chose it because it was the only way I could show my originality,” she said. “If I did another Dolly Parton song, then I would be doing one that I would have had to do just like her. And this one was old enough to where I could just make it current and do a completely different spin on it.”
As for Arthur’s plans for her own music moving forward, don’t expect her to go all Taylor Swift on us.
“It’s definitely gonna be on the traditional side. I wanna stay with my roots,” Arthur said. “There’s enough pop country out there.”
Any regrets? Well, Arthur does have one. No more cowgirl boots! Since making it to the Top 10, she’s added seven or eight pairs to the collection of her signature boots.
“I was like, ‘Man, if I had just made Top 3 I could have had a couple more pairs!’ she said.
But there’s always her planned return appearance on the finale. A shiny new pair of stylish boots just might be in order for the occasion.
