'Happy Endings' ratings drop

A happy ending is looking less and less likely for a certain ABC comedy.

Happy Endings ratings dropped through the floor Friday night.

Two back-to-back episodes at 8 p.m. averaged only 2 million viewers and a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating in the hour (with one episode only getting a 0.5). That’s down 25 percent from the comedy’s last original airing a couple weeks ago (coverage of the Boston bomber pursuit preempted the show last week). The performance tied Fox’s Touch, which is not expected to return next season, as the night’s lowest-rated show on a major broadcast network.

Also Friday: ABC’s Shark Tank (1.9) rallied despite its Happy Endings lead-in at 9 p.m. to lead the night. NBC’s Grimm (1.3) returned with its first original episode in a few weeks, down 13 percent. CBS’ Vegas (1.0) perked up, but CBS still likes its shows to perform better than this. The CW’s Nikita (0.3), which is on the bubble for a renewal and not among the network’s shows granted early pickups yesterday, was steady. We’ve been doubtful about Nikita‘s chances, but we’re also hearing The CW is mulling a short-order final season (which would make sense because The CW has a history of giving shows the opportunity to creatively end on their own terms with a final half-season batch — Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, etc.).
