The ACLU is trying to influence broadcast network comedy now: It’s launching a campaign to urge Modern Family to script a wedding episode for gay characters Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker.

The campaign to marry off the popular duo comes as the Supreme Court is deciding on two marriage equality cases — DOMA and Prop 8. The ACLU is direct counsel in the DOMA case, United States v. Windsor.

“The freedom to marry is being advanced in American living rooms as much as in court rooms,” said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero in a statement. “As we wait for the Supreme Court to rule, we want to keep this issue on the minds and screens of Americans everywhere.”

ACLU Action is hoping to generate online supporters who would promise to watch such an episode if the Modern Family producers decide to carry out such an unprecedented request. One snag, though: The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the two marriage equality cases in June and the ABC comedy will air its season finale on May 22. So it’s too late for anything to happen this season — and from what we hear, nothing huge (like Gloria’s pregnancy from last year) is set to occur next week. Sorry, ACLU!

But hey, that won’t stop the organization from pushing. “The ACLU has been working since 1936 to guarantee the rights of lesbian and gay people, and we see sending Cam and Mitch down the aisle before 13 million American viewers as the perfect next step,” added Romero.

For what it’s worth, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell) took to social media to show his appreciation: “Love this! Thank you ACLU! Maybe once Prop 8 is overturned!”
