Falling Skies returns for a third season this Sunday with all the sci-fi elements that first attracted an audience in summer 2011: action, creep-outs, and post-apocalyptic drama. Mystery has also always been a part of the TNT show (Why did the aliens invade Earth?), but mystery and intrigue are elements the makers of Falling Skies decided to ramp up even more this year.
One of the central mysteries of the new season is the identity of a mole within the resistance. Someone within Charleston, the new capital of what remains of the United States, is feeding inside information and strategies to the alien enemy.
Noah Wyle (Tom), Moon Bloodgood (Anne), Colin Cunningham (Pope), Drew Roy (Hal), and more cast members chat about season 3 mysteries in an EW exclusive video. Watch below, then read on for what showrunner Remi Aubuchon had to say about Falling Skies mysteries, surprises, and red herrings.
Aubuchon (who is departing the show before an expected fourth season to focus on his debut novel) told EW that when it came to the surprise answers to season 3 mysteries, the writers aimed to “make it not only organic but also something that eventually makes sense in the big picture.”
The showrunner also acknowledged that Falling Skies has a savvy audience that knows a red herring when they see one. That does make surprising viewers a challenge, but it’s one that Aubuchon believes the writers were up to task for.
“The red-herring problem has been a problem for every writer throughout the course of history probably,” Aubuchon said. “What we chose to do is to have a lot of red herrings. I firmly believe that the audience will be surprised by the way in which the mole is revealed.”
So how many red herrings… and how many episodes are there until the real mole is discovered? For now, that’s a mystery.
The third season of Falling Skies premieres on TNT this Sunday, June 9 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Subsequent episodes following the two-hour premiere will air on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
